Whimsy Madison Karrh I recently played and reviewed Landlord of the Woods from this maker. This is her earlier game, which both stands on its own feet and sows the seeds of the landlord to come. Self described as a ‘lil macabre game,’ Whimsy tells the story of a girl who wakes one morning to find red footsteps outside her door. What else would she do but follow them into the forest? A whimsical journey results. “Interesting forest creatures, puzzles on puzzles on puzzles, and sweet tiny tunes,” says the Steam page. Add in “critical ambient sound” and I would agree. If you set out on the red step road, you will get about 60 minutes of gentle puzzling set against an oddly surreal backdrop. Whimsy has the same visual style as the later Landlord though not as detailed. It is simpler but no less appealing. I confess that how it looks is a big part of why I enjoyed it so much. It is tonally right for the puzzling and that tale that goes on around it. Its not complicated, a few screens needing to be navigated and solved in order to do what is needed to move onto a few more, and so on. Work out some codes, complete some pattern puzzles, crown a king and feed a ‘beast’ among other things. Plus, take time to read a book. The game is completely point and click and saves as you go, but as it only takes about an hour I played straight through so can’t tell you how often. I expect its as you open up new parts of the forest. It was also free when I played and if that isn’t enough reason to get acquainted with the maker, I don’t know what is. I had a whimsically delightful hour and I look forward to playing her next game. I played on: OS: Windows 10, 64 Bit Processor: Intel i7-9700K 3.7GHz RAM: Corsair Dominator Platinum RGB DDR4 32GB Video card: AMD Radeon RX 580 8192MB
