LOCKED CHEST SOLUTION

Pat told you he got the necklace he gave you from your grandfather's chest. Examine the necklace and note it has 5 charms on it = 4 Diamonds and a Heart.

The 5 symbols on the chest must be manipulated and displayed in the same sequence as the 5 charms on the necklace, i.e. Diamond, Diamond, Heart, Diamond and Diamond.

Experiment with the symbols to see how they react when clicked. When a symbol is clicked, that symbol and 2 other symbols each rotate once, either clockwise or anti-clockwise. If the symbols have been arranged in the correct sequence, pressing the red button in the centre unlocks the chest. Pressing the red button at any other time restores the symbols to their original positions.

The following is a summary of how the symbols react

 ABCDE
Clicking A
Clicking B
Clicking C
Clicking D
Clicking E

The order in which the symbols appear on the tumblers is also fixed, i.e.

Manipulating the symbols to the required positions requires a combination of logic and trial-and-error. There are obviously a number of different ways to achieve the correct sequence, so the one detailed below is not unique.

B

C

D

E

Rotations required

NONE

The best way to approach the puzzle is to try get 2 symbols in their correct positions and the other 3 the same number of rotations away from their correct positions. Once a symbol is correctly positioned and it is thereafter rotated either clockwise or anti-clockwise, the rotation will need to be reversed at some stage. Therefore, when a symbol is correctly positioned, try limit the number of its subsequent rotations. At the outset the first symbol is correctly positioned, so its rotations should be kept to a minimum.

Begin by correctly positioning the last symbol (E) without moving the first one (A). Click E three times and note how this affects symbols C, D and E.

A

C

D

After clicking E three times

Rotations required

NONE

Symbols A and E are now correctly positioned. You know that clicking B and D affects both A and E, so try to manipulate the other three symbols using only B and D. Click B three times to produce:

A

B

C

D

E

Previous positions

After clicking B three times

Rotations required

Now reverse the effect on symbols A and E by clicking D three times.

After clicking D three times

Rotations required

NONE

Symbols B, C and D are the same number of positions away from being correct, so click C once to move them into their correct positions.

SOLUTION SUMMARY

Click E three times
Click B three times
Click D three times
Click C once

Note: The symbols can be clicked in any order as long as each one is clicked the number of times stated.
