You sound like you're near one of the tusks on the island. If it's the one I'm thinking of, you had to cross over a bridge to get there and passed the tusk to get to the hole. From the hole, you should walk over to the edge of the cliff where you'll find a ladder. Down at the bottom, you'll discover a control mechanism. Is that what you're trying to find?

If this is the elevator inside the main building, just enter the elevator and pull the whatever lever you find inside the elevator. You might have missed seeing the ride up, just exit the elevator and see if you're on the top floor. Keep us posted.

Are you talking about the elevator that you found by entering the lovely greenhouse on the water (under the observatory)? If so, you must fix it first. The levers are located on the wall by the elevator. Pull them while standing outside the elevator, and it will rise.

Might as well throw in my two cents! Like who's going to stop me? O.K., so maybe one of the moderators! I know you can go into the elevator and ride up and peek through the window and see the guy up there but you can't get off up there........yet. Also, from outside the elevator, to the far right (I think), you can send it up without you in it and gain access under it. That's where the fun begins.
I didn't do it......and if I did I'm not guilty!

As Billy Bob said, you can ride in the elevator but you can't get out until you fix it. The lever to make it go when you are inside is on the left when you're facing the door (the same lever you see on the wall to the right when you are facing the elevator door from the outside).

There should be a handle to pull through a little window. Try closing the door while you're inside and then looking at the wall of the elevator to your left.

When you entered the study you should have seen a book lying on a hammock, pick it up and have a look at the nice pictures for they help you enable the elevator get you into the upper room.
Facing the elevator you will see levers on wall on the right side of the elevator, levers that you can opperate to send the elevator up, without you inside. Once the elevator has gone up go down into the opening where the elevator stood, and don't forget to take that book along.
If something gets your goat, it just proves you have a goat to get.

Mome, I don't know of any telescopes under the elevator. You have to adjust the lever weights, the crank wheel, the gear switch, and the rotational gears under the elevator. Are you talking about the observatory up above?

Mome......What you are calling "telescopes" are those three things that do, indeed, look like telescopes......on a round wheel with three spokes. I don't remember what they are called. You should have a book with a picture of this that will show how they should be set. Maybe what I've just said, though, will help someone else to understand what you are talking about. Meanwhile, I'll try to work it out for you, too. EDIT:Look HERE . It might help. The book in the game will make them more clear.

O.K., if you're saying you did the puzzle under the elevator, got into the elevator and got off at the top where the "telescopes" are located around the room then I know where you are now. You have to look through these telescopes and focus on a symbol and overlay it on the symbol on a tusk. Then you have to use the location of those little ball when you go to the tusk to get to the linking book........as I remember it. I'll try to come back with a picture of what you're apparently talking about. Hang in there! EDIT:....Look HERE . I think this is what you want.

Well, the movement of the balls is determined by how well you focus and overlay the two images for each of the three tusks. You will need the location of the balls after you gain entry into the tusks. Can't tell you if your computer or the game is giving you problems but I'm sure you'll work it out.

Ah, you're up in the observatory! I was still trying to figure out what telescopes were under the elevator, Mome! As Billy Bob said, the movement of the balls is determined by the focus. At first, they move quite a lot as you hunt for the tusk symbol and move in closer. As the focus becomes finer, they will move just a little. Remember that the positions of the balls when the object is in focus is only a clue that you will use elsewhere on the island.
