Origament: A Paper Adventure Space Sauce Studio / Beverlor / Assemble Entertainment You are a letter, as well as a paper plane, a boat, a shuriken and a ball of paper. Never read, the letter needs to be delivered, and a spark of something gave it ‘life.’ A recurring cat might help. There is more of the lore on the Steam page, but for our current purposes that will suffice. This is platforming with some puzzles thrown in. It self describes as ‘chill’ with stunning views, being “less about the challenge and more about enjoying the journey.” While I am certainly enjoying the journey (having not yet finished), the challenge is still very challenging! You may find it less so, but precision and timing is regularly required. As is switching between your four available forms at the appropriate moment. Your scrunched up ball will probably be your stock in trade, but switching is essential. Being a plane enables you to sail over obstacles, and the shiruken not only wreaks havoc on bugs and other objects, it also provides a boost to a flagging plane. The boat is my least used to date, except when I accidentally switch to it and fail miserably. Working out how each object works, and how to deploy them is a part of things, so I won’t say any more. So too, you can find out about the elements in the game world you need to avoid or overcome or not fall off or linger on for any length of time. If at any time you fail, you get restored to the most recent checkpoint. These occur automatically and are fairly frequent (look out for the white column). There is no manual saving. The game can be played with the keyboard, but it is much better suited to a gamepad. I find that guiding my paper embodiments to where they need to go to be way more manageable with a joystick. The puzzling has to date been fairly benign. Icons will pop up to indicate something can be done here, and items that might be e.g., smashed will light up. Knowing where to go next has occasionally been an issue, at times exacerbated by very tight camera perspectives. I have also gathered a key or two, but having them is all you need in order to utilise them. As I progress through the realms, each with their own theme and soundtrack, I can gather coins. These can be spent in the Hub, where you will start each time you come back to the game, and where you will return to having successfully navigated a realm. I can purchase skins as well as what I thought at first were additional objects to use in the game (I was immediately drawn to the jet plane), but which are in fact real world instructions for making origami objects. It’s a nice touch. There is also the opportunity to engage in additional challenges as you progress through a realm. I confess that to date I have tried one and haven’t bothered to try another, mainly because I am primarily interested in getting to the end. I expect though to come back. Completing a realm has given me a ‘key’ to open a portal in the Hub to a different realm. I can though, should I want to, visit ‘completed’ realms, in order to collect missed coins, to undertake any available challenges, or just because it was fun. I can also pull myself back to the Hub at any time via the menu. Each time you come back to the game you will be in the Hub. If you choose to enter the realm not yet completed, you can start from the most recent checkpoint or from the beginning. There is no spoken word but there are things to read. There is plenty of effective sound and a series of soundtracks. I am about two and a half hours of play time in, and am making slow but continued progress. Despite regular ‘mishaps,’ I am having a good time. I played on: OS: Windows 11, 64 Bit Processor: Intel i7-9700K 3.7GHz RAM: Corsair Dominator Platinum RGB DDR4 32GB Video card: AMD Radeon RX 580 8192MB
