I just started playiing Gray Matter and it isn't playing very well on my new computer. The opening cut scene halted evert 3 seconds and every so often something else from the game briefly flashes on and then is gone. The game has a very sluggish feel to it. I am playing on the low resolution. Here are the specs of my new computer:

Dell Studio XPS 7100
It has ATI Radeon HD 5770 1 GB
Windows 7 Premium 64 Bit
8 GB Dual Channel DDR3 SDRam
1TB-7200RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 16MB Cache 16x DVD-RW

When I tried to look at my computer it said that I have 852 GB free out of 920 GB but I have a large hardrive and not a lot of things on it yet, so I don't understand that.

I have an external harddrive that I can move games to (I think) if I could figure out how to do it. However, I didn't expect to have this kind of trouble with a new computer. I have Still Life 2, SH vs Lupin and this game loaded but not much music and no videos.

What could be causing the game to run like this?

Thanks.

Do you have an antivirus running in the background? If you have an antivirus scanning everything the game is doing, it could slow down the game.

Jenny,

I'm not sure but this game is very sluggish. I looked at the Norton but it doesn't seem to be running. How do I check that and disable it?

I just removed something called Registry Mechanic- PC Tools that I somehow installed. In the past, it has run at odd times so maybe that will help. Before I did this I uninstalled Still Life 2 but the game still didn't run any better. I am not sure how to reset my Norton anivirus but I think it runs later in the evening.

I am very disappointed because I rushed out today to get this game and it has been a big disappointment. I posted the problems in Glitches so I am not asking for help just making an observation.

I read Becky's review and she didn't have any problems but I sure am. I have a very new computer with a good video card but the game is very sluggish and the opening cutscenes kept stopping every three seconds. I like the fact that you can hit the spacebar to see the hotspots but once you look at them they don't go away so it is hard to know if I should go back or what I should do.The hotspots are labeled, so there are words all over the screen. When I did look at them again, I got the same messages.

The character moves in a choppy fashion but the dialogue is fine. The music keeps breaking up. I am hoping that someone in Glitches will have the magic cure for my problems. I would be interested to hear from others who are playing this game to see if they are experiencing the same problems. I am playing on Windows 7.

I am really disappointed because I was so excited to play this game and other games have played just fine.

Gatsbygirl,

There is a configuration frame that comes on before the game is installed.
You select the performance preference you want on your gameplay: resolution, effects, shadows, mirrors, rendering and quality.

So how your gameplay acts depends on what you chose.

You can adjust or play with it and see if your problems can be eased.

Go to the installed game folder and open the config app and adjust.

MaG,

I saw that when the game was installing and I left it on the low setting. At this point, how do I get back to it to make adjustments and how do I know what changes to make? Other games I have played on this new computer have worked fine.

Thanks.

Hi,
I have the same problem on a real fast desktop computer, but the video card isn't as good as the one on my lap top and the game plays just great on the lap top so, I will try to configure this computer to play the game better.

Thanks Mag
P.S. Mag I was able to right click on the Gray Matter Icon, go to properties and bring up the folder, found the configure folder and was able to edit it a bit and now the game is playing just great on this desktop.

Thanks again.

Charllotte

Hit the Space Bar to show the Hotspots and then hit it again to get rid of them smile

Charlette,

I have a good video card and I did go into the game folder and set everything to low but the game isn't any better. I have also turned the brightness, volume sound effects etc. down. What config worked for you? I don't know what else to do.

Someone suggested that my virus scan might be affecting it. Norton is set to automatically scan. Maybe I should try to figure out how to change that? Would that make a difference? Should I try to turn it off?

Glad you got it to work better. I am hoping that something will eventually work for me.

Thanks.

Try to turn off the antivirus's real time scanning while you're playing the game. Remember to reactivate the real time scanning when you've finished your playing session.

segamer,

I am back trying to play Gray Matter again but it is still running very slowly. I posted these problem in the glitches forum when I first started playing it but nothing I have tried has made any difference. It is a good game but the pace of it has made it tedious to play: Sam walks in slow motion, the video scenes sputter along and there is a long wait between the time I ask a question and the character responds.

You mentioned that you adjusted the settings and then it played fine. I have a new computer with a good video card so it should play very well. Do you remember what you did to change your settings? I did as everyone suggested and looked at the configuration folder but I don't know enough about the configuration settings to know what to do.

Thanks!

Gatsbygirl,
I have a Dell XPS 8100,
Windows Home Premium 64-bit with
Intel Core i5 CPU, 2.67 GHZ,
6GB RAM, nVida GeForce GTS 240, 1 GB.

Unfortunately, I am not savvy enough to tell how our two machines compare, but I've had absolutely no problem installing or playing Gray Matter, without any modifications upon installation.

I wish I could help. : (

The answer is....chocolate! Who cares what the question is.....

Mary,

Sounds a lot like my computer. Does it have Windows 7? Can't figure out why it won't play well on my computer. Other games have been playing great!

When you run the config program what settings do you have?

mj2c,

I currently have the settings on low or none. I have tried using every setting (I think) and nothing helps. Today while playing,I kept the config box open and tried a setting and then the game, tried another setting and went back to the game etc. but nothing seemed to do much.

The video scenes are tortuous to watch because they sputter along with voices going in and out like they are stuttering and the video is very slow. The characters move like they are robots, so everything takes forevver to do. I am not sure why other people haven't had similar problems.

I have been home from work today and have played for over six hours and barely progressed because the gameplay is so slow. I am wondering if I could have a "bad" copy. If you have any suggestions, I am more than willing to try them. The grahics are great but the game is being ruined for me by the sluggishness of it.

Thanks.!

It's certainly a puzzler. Have you tried it on the lowest resolution (1024x768 I think) - Vertical Sync on/off, Hardware cursor on/off? I'm assuming everything else is set to Low or Off. How about windowed mode? Drivers up to date? Tried it with firewall and virus checker turned off? Tried with just the one core? Uninstall/Reinstall? Did the .Net stuff get installed at the end of the game install? I'm running out of stuff:-)

Your point about changing the settings whilst the game is loaded - I'm not sure some of them would take effect until you restart the game.

This will probably sound silly but have you tried compatibility mode?

Kaki's Sister,

It said that if you are having trouble playing the game on an older computer you can switch to XP etc. Is that what you mean? Since my computer is new I didm't think that would work. Do you think that might work? If I switch in the middles of the game will I lose all of my progress?

Thanks.

Crompound1,
Try asking in the Hints forum.
What you're seeing may not be a glitch.

Make sure that you have the full drivers installed for the video card and not the ones that windows loads by default. You can go to the website of the graphics card manufacturer and download the newest drivers. Do not use the ones on Microsoft's Window's Update as they sometimes are not full drivers.
See link below for ATI Drivers.

http://support.amd.com/us/Pages/AMDSupportHub.aspx

http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/Pages/radeon_win7-64.aspx

Also if using the DVI port I would use the DVI Port that is next to the HDMI Port and not the lower one.

Thanks Donald, I will see if the drivers need to be updated. What do you mean am I using the DVI port? I'm not sure what that is.

DVI port is what you plug your monitor into.
The cable connector looks like ***this***
and it plugs into something that looks like ***this*** on your video card.

gats you can switch to XP mode without losing your progress. It's worth a try if all else fails.
