Most copy protection protection schemes I've seen prevent a copy from being made rather than prevent a player from finishing the game. Or, if a copy is made, it won't work. But to let it work until the game is almost complete...new to me.

My role in the aforementioned experiment was to get the game to install on as many different flavors of Windows as possible. By the time all the testing was done, I was on to something else.

If, however, you have a saved game from near your crash, I'd be willing to do some more experimenting.

I don't remember the exact error message that Disk Dump gave. But I've never had it on any other game - unless it was a copy "protected" game. Of course nowadays Disk Dump usually won't even start with "protected" games. It's old, but usually works well with old games that have teeny tiny little installs and are accessing the CD all the time as you play.

I think TAGES can cause errors like that (sneaky). But TAGES is a newer copy "protection" - not something "9" would be using.

It wasn't an obvious crash though - just a failure of things to respond. I'd played "9" before - the old version that would only work on my 486. Then I sent in that disk and got the replacement disk. When I finally got around to replaying it, I decided to use Disk Dump and play it with Daemon-Tools so it wouldn't be slowed down by accessing the CD all the time. This is the one I had the problem with. I even bought an old Game Guide for "9" in case there was something I had forgotten to do which wasn't in the Walkthrough, but there was nothing. What I did should have worked.

Yeah, well, I felt that way about Forever Worlds...

Without a saved game and some fiddling with a CD in the drive and then a CD image, there's no way to tell what might be going on. I doubt copy protection is to blame, but that's just a doubt, not a fact. Sounds more like a simple freeze and that might be due to really sloppy coding; the sort where the game eats up all the system memory and then just grinds to a halt.

All that said, I'm just glad to be away from Salty...

Jema, if you are still reading this thread, that game you are asking about is probably Realms of the Haunting. That business of having to fix the lights gave it away.

Mind you, this is all just part of the FIRST chapter, this is one of the longest Adventure Game there is.

Jema, if that's the game you meant, it really was regarded as a very good action adventure, but I can sure see that it would be impossible with a black screen! It was difficult enough when you could see those baddies!

Granny was answering a question that Jenna had way back on the first page of this thread. Jenna thought the name of the game was Legacy or something like that,which she had a problem with, and granny believed she was talking about Realms of the Haunting.

I am sorry if I confused the issue here. I got started on a rant because one of the posters talked about throwing out a game and The Legacy was the only game I ever tossed out. I looked it up on the internet and it was produced by Microprose in 1992. Didn't they also do Phantom of the Opera? That was a fun game; Legacy was not. Granny, I was never able to play Realms of the Haunting. For some reason, it didn't work on my system.

Jenna, that wasn't your fault in the least, it was bad granny and I! Gotcha' - you're talking about "The Legacy: Realm of Terror" also known as "Haunted House".
And it was me that threw away 9 and also Fork in the Tale. Back then I didn't know about stuff like trading post or even Gameboomers, so it was either keep it or throw it as hard as possible into the trash!
