Shadows on the Stairs (1941)

Frieda Inescort as Mrs. Stella Rosabelle Armitage
Paul Cavanagh as Joseph "Joe" Reynolds
Heather Angel as Sylvia Armitage
Bruce Lester as Hugh Bromilow
Miles Mander as Tom Armitage
Lumsden Hare as Inspector Gregg
Turhan Bey as Ram Singh
Charles Irwin as Constable
Phyllis Barry as Lucy Timson, the Maid
Mary Field as Phoebe Martia St. John Snell
Paul Renay as Choong Thi, Hindu Sailor

Mystery abounds in this London boarding house. Residents who are not who they pretend to be. Strange things going on at night. When a body is found the police are brought in to investigate one murder and discover they have a string of murders on their hands, Their suspects are keeping things from them and each other. Who done it and why? Twist ending.
The only part that was real was the scene where Sylvia Adams tells playwrite Hugh Bromilow he should write a murder mystery, the rest was the story he wrote. No murders and no strange goings on at midnight.

Cemetery Without Crosses (1969) original title "Une corde, un Colt..." ("The Rope and the Colt")
Produced by Jean-Pierre Labatut & Jean-Charles Raffini
Directed by Robert Hossein (dinner scene by Sergio Leone)
Screenplay by Robert Hossein & Claude DeSailly

Michèle Mercier as Maria Caine
Robert Hossein as Manuel
Guido Lollobrigida (as Lee Burton) as Thomas Caine
Daniele Vargas (as Daniel Vargas) as Will Rogers
Michel Lemoine as Eli Caine
Anne-Marie Balin as Diana Rogers
Serge Marquand as Larry Rogers
Pierre Hatet as Frank Rogers
Philippe Baronnet as Bud Rogers
Pierre Collet as Sheriff Ben
Ivano Staccioli as Vallee Brother
Béatrice Altariba as Saloon Woman
Benito Stefanelli as Ben Caine (uncredited)
Cris Huerta as Hotelier (uncredited)
Ángel Álvarez as Bartender (uncredited)

The dialogue including the theme song "The Rope and the Colt" is English.

Will Rogers (not that one) and his murderous sons lynch Ben Caine, kill his brother's lifestock and burn down their ranch. Because Ben's brothers Thomas and Larry are cowardly they spend the entire movie wanting to head to Mexico, Ben's widow turns to her a past lover, Manual Lemoine, for revenge. He initially refuses but of course he changes his mind. Manual is an ex-gunfighter who always puts a black glove on one hand just before he kills. Why is revealed at the end.

Manual gets himself hired as ranch forman by the Rogers after he kills three men who are attempting to kill one of the sons. But then he kidnaps Diana Rogers. the only daughter and takes her to Maria Caine. Things go bad from there without most of the cast dead by the end.

Often called a spaghetti western that's not accurate since its producers, director and lead actors are French. Somebody reviewing it on Amazon called it an "escargot western". Those involved were fans of Sergio Leone's westerns however and dedicated the movie to him. He actually directed the scene where the Rogers, their ranc hands and Manual are all having dinner.

Slow by modern standards it does feel like a spaghetti western so if you them you'll like it. Just don't expect a happpy ending. The old saying "when you set out for revenge, dig two graves (one for yourself) applies.

Free with Amazon Prime.

I love old movies too. They come from a time when wit, and humor, and a story were king. Much like the classic adventure games I love. I have all the movies I reference.

Here are a few of my favorites:

Bringing Up Baby -Cary Grant
Father Goose -Cary Grant
Young Frankenstein
Airplane
Casablanca -Bogie
City Lights !!! Charlie Chaplin at his best
Modern Times -Charlie Chaplin
The African Queen - Bogie and Katherine Hepburn
Dr Strangelove Dark humor, but it has it all.
Robin Hood, Men In Tights -Mel Brooks
Robin Hood -The Errol Flynn one
Lost Horizon
Ninocthka
The Big Store -The Marx Brothers
The Sound Of Music
Mary Poppins
The Great Dictator -Charlie Chaplin
You Can’t Take It With You

I’m interested in in your choices, where can I find them? Most of my references I got from TCM (Turner Classic Movies).

Ahhhh. The African Queen. I think it is a fabulous film and still enjoy re-watching it bravo

Also, the Lawrence Olivier version of Rebecca.

In fact I have way too many old favourites to start listing them all lol
