I'm getting a direct x error message right before it starts to install. Install DirectX 9.0c before installing the game. Do a search for DirectX 9.0c for Windows 10with Duckduckgo, Startpage, Bing, or whatever your search engine of choice might be.

If anyone is still interested in / monitoring this thread, I recently got DSOM installed and running on my Win 10 laptop. It works well but my only problem is the text is clickable...but invisible (even using the version of riched32 that Marian found & provided in the other, old DSOM "text fix" thread (thank you for that effort...). Please let me know if anyone can still use any help ... or please let me know if anyone has already got the game working with visible text on a Win 10 machine. I've also asked Winterfury if he knows if DSOM will work (w/ visible text...) on a Win 10 machine.
Oh, and on a related topic, has anyone been able to run Temujin (another Southpeak FMV game) in Win 10...? Thanks....

That's great news that you got DSOM installed and running. Did you use a virtual machine? What did you do to get it running? Well except for the text issue.
Let's wait to see if anyone who lurks down here has tried to get Temujin running on Windows 10.

I'm able to run DSOM directly in Win 10 but the text is invisible. Runs very well otherwise. I can also get DSOM to run in PCem Win 95 emulator...and the text is visible there(!) (not sure why...) and the game runs well there also. However, to the best of my knowledge, PCem allows for only one CD-ROM drive, requiring repetative disk (image) swaps for this game (& Temujin), where playing directly under Win 10 allows multiple disk images to be virtually mounted simul., eliminating all the required disk swapping, which I prefer. So I'm determined to figure out how to get the DSOM text to appear in Win 10 & I'm hoping Winterfury might help...
For both DSOM & Tem., I copied each Disk 1 to HD, mount Disk images 1 & 2 for convenience, "riched32" in DSOM "bin" folder, use the launch32 executable for each (Compatibility - 16 bit color (8 bit color for Temujin...)/640x480/disable optimizations/run as admin.), DSOM loads and runs well (except for the text...) Is this the type of info. you're looking for...? What else, if more needed...?
Temujin also loads and runs well directly under Win10 but I have a strange problem after closing it out and then trying to run it again. First, it DOES NOT return my screen resolution back to default (from the Compatability 640x480 setting...) as it should & as DSOM does, so it appears the game is not closing out properly. Second, when I try to run the game again, I get the following two error pop-ups :
"Failed to copy file D:\temujin\Core\MFC40.DLL to C:\Users...\VRBin\MFC40.DLL Received error: 32 The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process."
-AND-
"Unable to copy file D:\temujin\bin\VRDMFC.exe to C:\Users...\VRBin\VRDMFC40.exe Error: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. Try rebooting and running again."
Again, it seems that these files think Temujin is connected to/accessing them maybe? Once I reboot my laptop, I can again start the game as normal (Once...then the errors appear again if I close & re-open the game without rebooting first). Frustrating. Any thoughts from anyone on these issues would be a help...
Last, AMBER also runs directly under Win 10. Haven't played it much yet but verified it will at least load & start/run a bit...

Marian / Draclvr,
Did either of you get DSOM or Amber running in Win 10 to verify they run ok...? Also, you guys are vets here. Do either of you happen to know the originator of the DSOM text fix, Winterfury...?

I haven't tried with Amber yet. I have no idea about DSOM... I think it was from a Youtube video, but I don't remember for sure.

Hello,
I am new to the forum so please bare with me if I make any mistakes on here. I got Dark Side of the Moon working on Windows 10 and I will go through what worked for me and things to try. First of all I will not post links unless it's ok for me to do so. The instructions I will provide are going to be a bit messy because let's be real, trying to get old games to work on a modern system can be quite the challenge. Luckily we have a great community of gamers out there to get old games working. So I hope I can provide the information necessary to get this game working for all of you.
DISCLAIMER: Before we get started, I got this working on the DVD Version, not sure if the CD version works the same way. If you want to try it to see if these instructions work for you, gladly post your results below. I also want to be clear that I also know you can VMware with windows 95 to get it to work and while that's a lot more painless... I really wanted to figure out how to get it to work on Windows 10.
Couple things to grab before you get started:
1. Download the riched32.dll, a quick google search of the game and this file should get you results, I believe Winterfury referenced this file(Do not quote on me that, that's just what I found)
2. Download Direct X End User Runtimes for June 2010 from Microsoft.
Instructions: NOTE - Getting this game to work is a bit messy on Windows 10 and you'll see why once you get to these steps, if you have cleaner steps, please by all means post them below. My method is not great.
1. Go to Control Panel, Programs, Turn Windows Features on or off, Go to legacy components, make sure Direct Play is checked. Your computer might require a reboot.
2. The Direct X End User you downloaded, extract to a folder,(there's a bunch of directx versions in that folder, don't worry about these) then run DxSetup. Go through this process.
3. Put in your copy of the game, whether it's the dvd, disc 1, or mount the image you have.
4. Find the lauch32 executable on your copy of the game, right click the executable, go to properties and set the compatibility to XP Service Pack 2.
NOTE: Now this is where it really starts to get messy, because most likely your still going to run into an error trying to run DSOM because it will complain it doesn't see Direct X5 or higher. So these next steps are what worked for me because it took me awhile to get this working.
5. Find the folder with the directx software on the disc. I believe they included this with both versions of the game(DVD,CD). Run the DxSetup within there. You can try running the DXtool in there as well. Then try running the game. I tried several times to force the game to use a lower version of direct X which with Windows 10 will try to use something higher than what the game is trying to call for.
6. Try the install again, You should finally have it where it's installed on the computer. Just again, make sure you run XP Service Pack 2 for compatibility mode.
7. Before I even started the game - I copied the riched32.dll to the bin folder of the installed directory.
8. Run the game and you should have text on the screen when you start playing.
Again, I just want to be clear that I can't say that these methods will work for you but I did get it working. The method for me was getting the game to call for an older version of DirectX which makes it difficult. Just thought I'd share my instructions with you and hope that it works!

Welcome to Gameboomers, Flamefury42! Only a truly dedicated adventure gamer would go through this many steps to play an older game. But, you've come to the right place because there are quite a few dedicated adventure gamers here. One thing that gave me pause was downloading that riched32.dll. One thing I never want to enter is "dll h*ll." How did you make sure you got the file from a reputable source?
And congratulations on getting the game running in Windows 10!

Drac, here is a thread from GameBoomers about the riched32.dll. It is good to be cautious, but I too have this file, which fixes the text not showing up in Dark Side of the Moon on older computers. I got this file from the person who created it to address this game issue - not sure where it might be available now where it can be easily distinguished as a guaranteed legitimate source. I backed it up on my external drive so I would not lose the file. Thank you for the instructions for Windows 10, flamefury42, and to GameBoomers! There are those among us (myself included) who will go to great lengths to get a game running. I have found it to be well worth the effort, though, being as I pretty much have any game I wanted to play/replay from the late 1980s until now, all running on the same computer.
