I just paid the second installment of my property tax on the 80 acres of farmland I own in NW Iowa. My mom and dad had 240 acres and when mom passed a few years ag at age 94, my sister, brother and I each inherited 80 acres. My brother farms the land and pays my sister and me rent. Then we have to pay property tax on our 10 acres we live on here by the end of the year. We anticipate it and are prepared, but it's quite a chunk at the end of the year!

Our taxes are due on July 1st. There is a deferral plan here but I just think that makes no sense for someone like me. My neighbours, though, they're struggling right now because of the market downturn, and so they defer their property taxes every year. When the property eventually sells the municipality will get its money. Fortunately, the value of the property we share has gone up substantially is the past decade.
I do get a discount on my residence but the two rentals I have add up to a huge amount each year. I'm trying to sell them right now and have run into the housing market correction. Nobody wants them, and I'm not making enough on them to make owning them worthwhile. I'll probably take them off the market soon and then put them back on in the Spring.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone in the US! I'm off to start cooking. It's just me and hubby, a 12 pound turkey and a couple bottles of wine. Just the way we like it!

This is my day to vegetate after the marathon of cooking yesterday. But I enjoy the cooking as much as the eating. We even had a tomato salad with tomatoes from the garden! The garden is long put to sleep for the winter, but when we pulled up all the plants, we had hundreds of HUGE green tomatoes which we put in beer flats in the garage to ripen. I'll be eating them almost up to Christmas.
The Germans brought me a bottle of white wine last summer and I saved it for Thanksgiving. It was so heavenly, I had to share it with hubby.
Gerry, I'm not sure I have any room YET for a bagel!
