I am sure I remember previous threads recommending books members were reading but cannot find anything recent, so how about it?

Or perhaps you are all too busy gaming... wink

I really only read escapist fiction, usually involving a fair amount of mindless violence and/or a dark sense of humour. John Sandford still usually ticks the box at the top of the list, and I am missing Lee Child.

There are some rewarding sci-fi writers about including Adrian Tchaikovsky (especially Children of Time) and I greatly enjoyed John Scalzi's Old Man's War series.

Most recently I have enjoyed a couple of thrillers by Doug Johnstone set in Edinburgh, A Dark Matter and the Big Chill, and a military space opera series Frontlines by Marko Kloos in which I am awaiting publication of volume eight...

Life is what happens while you're making other plans.

Lex, if you like a good police series, try the 17 books by Louise Penny with Inspector Chief Gamache as the main character.

I'm presently reading her last one: All the Devils are Here.

As far as I'm concern, all of them are good to read. thumbsup

Connie, I loved Discovery of Witches!

I just finished a book that was just fascinating to me. Evolution by Steven Baxter follows earth and how life changed over millions of years. After a brief prologue about a famous female paleontologist in the year 2031 attending a conference in Australasia, she remembers being on a dig in Montana with her mother as a child when they found a single tooth. As her mother explained the significance of finding a Purgatorious tooth, she begins her journey to follow in her mother's footsteps.

Chapter 1 starts circa 65 million years before the present. Because I have always been interested in this field and read about it often, it would be one thing to start discussing what the earth and it's inhabitants were like. But the author tells the story from the perspective of Purga (probably the owner of that tooth!), a tiny little progenitor of the Primate family. Her adventures among the feet of giant dinosaurs in her quest for food quickly draw you into her world. The backdrop is a strange light in the sky - the tail of a huge comet hurtling through space for 5 million years and about to collide with the planet in what is now the Yucatan Peninsula.

Chapter 2 jumps back to 185 million years before the present to set up the planet when Pangea was all the land masses in one. This time we follow the story of an ornitholestes dinosaur name Listener and her mate. Again, you're drawn into their encounters with huge herds of diplodocus dinosaurs 90 feet long and 15 feet tall. I found myself stopping to look up the dinosaurs so could see what they looked like!

Chapter 3 picks up at where the comet impacts earth and what happens after. The impact changes the entire planet. We've all heard how this was the end of the dinosaurs which allowed the rise of mammals like the descendants of little Purga.

Chapter 4 jumps ahead a couple of million years to Texas and the story of a little primate named Plesi.

The book continues with the evolution of life and the planet itself as it goes through massive geologic upheaval and changes in climate and telling the stories of mass extinctions and the evolving primates and even the dinosaurs who survived the comet. I think perhaps you need to have an existing fascination with all this to find it interesting, but I could hardly put it down to go to bed!

I've been reading a series of books, starting with "From the Ashes of Angels: The Forbidden Legacy of a Fallen Race" through "The Sign and the Seal" and "Secrets of the Fields. "From the Ashes of Angels is about the ancient people of Mesopotamia. The Sign and the Seal is written by Graham Hancock, who later wrote "Fingerprints of the Gods" and "Magicians of the Gods." "The Sign and the Seal" is about his search for the Lost Ark of the Covenanant -- the one in the "Raiders" movie -- and how he went through the process of finding the history of the original.

Andrew Collins also wrote a book called "Atlantis in the Caribbean" which is about the theory that Atlantis and Bimini Row have a common origin. Rand and Rose Flem-Ath also wrote a book called "Atlantis Beneath the Ice: The Fate of the Lost Continent," formerly called "Atlantis in the Caribbean." This is about the theory that Atlantis and Bimini Row are the same thing (which I don't believe but which makes for an interesting theory.) It talks about the theory of pole shifting, and has intereesting diagrams showing how the northern pole would have shifted not just once but twice.

"Secrets in the Fields: The Science and Mysticism of Crop Circles" is a book about crop circles written by Freddy Silva. This book had some good color photographs of the outlines and colors of crop circles. It also had an interesting introduction.

"Atlantis and the Silver City" was written by Peter Daughtrey, a Portuguese man who believed Atlantis was in the south of Portugal. He identified several locations that he believed were landmarks in Portugal as well as landmarks in Atlantis. It's interesting how many similarities there are, or were. This is a free book, written by Kaj Halberg and Jon Burke, which can be downloaded from one of the authors' websites. They took electrostatic measurements out in the field to show how variations could affect germination and improve the health of seedlings. The pictures on the website http://kajhalberg.dk/en/play/
show the children of villagers and their animals/pets.

We recently watched Justified on Amazon Prime, and absolutely loved it. I'm currently reading my way through the original Raylan Givens novels by Elmore Leonard, which were the source material for the show. The author also worked extensively on the series, which had his trademark dark, dry wit.

Hubby and I watched the Justified series a couple of years ago and love it. I was always going to read the novels, but forgot about them. I will put them on my list this time!

Lex, are you talking about the Jack Reacher series? Number 26 is supposed to be out this October according to fantasticfiction.com. I only have 20 of the books so far and have not yet read them all.

I am ashamed to say that I have been reading The Client by John Grisham for about a year now. I like the book enough but just can't seem to settle into reading much anymore. Possibly when I finally finish this book and start a different book, I will decide/see that it was just this particular book. Time will tell.

I like that series. And Bosch as well.

Currently I'm reading The Alchemist by Stephanie Meyer. Quite enjoyable.
I'm also reading short stories by MR James. Just a few more stories till A Warning to The Curious. Bonus points if you know which game was inspired by that story.

I believe that would be The Lost Crown.

Yes smile I managed to secure a collection of short stories by MR James. Those stories seems to be an influence on HP Lovecraft's stories.
When I am finished with those stories I can proceed to a short story collection from Henry James, in particular the stories that inspired The Haunting of Bly Manor.

Jarkeld, The Turn of the Screw is a great ghost story by Henry James. There was also a very good movie adaptation of it with Deborah Kerr called The Innocents. Truly a fantastic psychological horror movie.

I've devoured all of Connelly's Bosch novels and loved the TV series with Titus Welliver. I've read a couple of the Lincoln Lawyer books, too.

I'm currently feasting my way through my set of George R. R. Martin's Game of Thrones series. I've read A Game of Thrones, A Clash of Kings, and A Storm of Swords, and I'm two-thirds of the way through A Feast for Crows. The last one in the set is A Dance with Dragons. I haven't watched the series yet but will eventually to see how it compares to the written saga, which is wonderful. I really enjoy the way the chapters jump from one character to another and how each book features parts of the world more in depth so that the reader can understand the different cultures in the fantasy world. I also love the included maps and the extensive appendices showing the greater and lesser houses and affiliations of the characters.

I found that having already read the books, I was able to keep track of all the characters and relationships a lot easier when we watched the series.

Lady K those are my favorite books of all time. happydance I couldn't put those books down and the show is filled with amazing sets, costumes and actors.

I just finished The Trouble With Peace by Joe Abercrombie. It is book two of a trilogy so now I'm waiting for the final book to be released.

It's nice to be important but it is much more important to be nice.

I've always been an avid reader. When I was young, I was into Nancy Drew, now I play the games.

Before the virus hit, I would go out for 2 or 3 times a week, and get in some quality reading time. Now, my games call to me and I haven't touched a novel in too long.

When I do read, all time favorite author is Dean Koontz. Have read most of his stuff. Started on Stephen King a few years back, but don't like everything of his; bit too macabre for me. Last time I browsed thru the used book sale at my local library I picked up a the beginning of the Sue Grafton alphabetic series (A is for, etc.). Simple to follow, entertaining stories of local crime.

I pretty much stay away from espionage cause I can't follow or understand it. Mostly like 'whodunits' cause, no matter if critics call those authors' writing 'formulaic' I can never tell until near the end who the 'bad guy/gal' is. I like stories with twists and turns. Just when you think you know, you don't.

I like to browse thru 'Abe's Book Store', an online discount place that offers stuff donated by libraries. Most of time, only cost is the postage. Sometimes, I'll get an autobiography or two.

Life's a puzzle; one piece at a time.

I understand not being able to put them down, as my 3:30 AM bedtime today attests. I have a t-shirt that says, "As soon as I finish this chapter" which, of course, means anywhere from 2-6 more. smile

I used to read lots of books every month - making excellent use of the local library - but my reading these days ( because I spend way too much time on computers !! wink ) is very spasmodic.

My favourite authors of all time are folk like Charles Dickens, the Bronte Sisters and Alexandre Dumas - but I do enjoy crime fiction as well and one of my favourite authors of that genre is John Grisham grin

In the middle of a rather delicious "evil castle in the Alps in the winter" story called The Ancestor by Danielle Trussoni. I'm going to hate when this one is over!

Me, too.

Most of the books I buy these days are on Kindle, but the actual physical books I have in my library are the classics, along with a few of my favourite science fiction writers like Iain Banks and C.J. Cherryh. And of course my collection of Pratchett's Discworld novels.
