I think I've posted this before - I have music in my head constantly. I wake up in the middle of the night with music in my head. Usually it's something I REALLY dislike or something I haven't heard or thought about for 60 years. Sunday school songs and Christmas carols I don't care for are examples. Then I can't get rid of them for days sometimes! But this morning I woke up with Steely Dan's FM in my head! YES! So, I had to pop up that album in my headphones...

Steely Dan is most welcome in my head, too. I have a few of their songs on my Spotify playlist.

I usually have my whale (ambient space) music playing in the background during the day ... and then when WOM is in the same location and humming a tune the next thing I know is I'll start playing that tune in my head too. Draclvr, I've never had music in my dreams ... especially tunes I don't care for ..."weird dreams!!" inhabit my brain most nights just before I wake up.

Soot, one night I was dreaming about an old negro spiritual song called "The Old Ark's A'Movering." This was a song that I sang acapella in a trio of 3 girls when I was a junior or senior in high school - which makes it a minimum of 60 years since I've even thought of it! We did sing it at the Iowa State Music Contest and got a #1 rating!

Where does this stuff COME from?!

I always have music in my head, but I could not sing worth a [blip] and I did not have the determination to practice and so progress beyond a pretty basic level of musical instrument playing! My lack of musical ability led me to becoming a DJ while I was a student, giving me a more useful income stream than I could have earned as a struggling musician: back then, it did not seem like a valid career prospect...

Lex, I totally understand the more useful 'income stream' ... you must have had your own gear which you setup at your different gig locations...

Exactly that Dan. I built much of the gear myself for sound and lights with the assistance of some engineering students, the art being to have something which could be set up very quickly without having to rely on a steady table (we are talking about turntables for vinyl) or nearby power points, and in one winter subject to power cuts, even having a standby generator. I ended up operating in Oxford, London and Paris (where I spent a year as part of a French degree) - fantastic fun!

Wow ... that sounds like it was a blast! And from an educational perspective I imagine you learned quite a bit by "doing!"

I never had a fixed setlist: I relied on inspiration guided by my take on the mood of the room (not often wrong) and would take some requests while disdaining others!
