Good morning Ana Fogfighter Gerry and all that follow. Gerry, glad you were able to get to the Break Room as we enjoy your wide awake double dark brew...hope the rest of your Monday is without incident. Instant coffee has always been my quick fix for morning coffee Fogfighter. Enjoy your 50 shades of green. I've always enjoyed the scent of fresh earth and damp foliage in the air after a period of rain. Ferns and grasses stand taller and the entire landscape has a sense of rejuvenation including the birds and insects who become active again, adding to the refreshed atmosphere. Happy Monday everyone!

Good Monday morning and welcome to the new thread! The DDWAB is really hitting the spot this morning.
The Father's Day pork steaks were stellar. Today my granddaughter and I are going to make strawberry rhubarb pies! They will be heading back to Colorado tomorrow morning.
Then the Germans will move back over here for a few weeks. They pretty much do their own thing and do a lot of shopping in St. Louis and spend most of their time outside by the pool.
I hate to say it, but we're going to have to start watering tomatoes. They need 1" a week and we have a stretch of 95 degree weather in store this week. Blech.
Gardens put to bed. Time for more reading and gaming.

Good morning all.
I'm off to Pilates and then some garden clean-up. It's a lovely day and I should take advantage while I can!
Dude had me in hysterics last night trying to get Willow to play; he was crab-walking and dashing past her nose and jumping out from behind the furniture. Willow's response was to give him a lazy swat. I took pity on the little beast and chased him around the house a bit. Those two can cheer me up like nothing else.
Later today I'll take some rhodo leaves in to the nursery. Two of my 4 rhodos are sick, but with obviously different things. I can't replace them since they're planted in spaces between the stamped concrete and digging them up would be almost impossible, so I need to find out what's wrong and what the solution might be.
I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

Connie, welcome back...glad you had a great conference! The cinnamon crunch bagel is wonderful. Draclvr ... I've heard of rhubarb pies, as our neighbors in New Hampshire grew it in their garden and brought rhubarb pies over for us to eat. But I haven't heard of strawberry rhubarb pies ... and they sound delicious. Hagatha, Willow and Dude remind me of our two cats from years ago. Hope you get to the bottow of your rhodo sickness. Have a wonderful afternoon everyone.

Good morning Connie, Gerry, Draclvr, Hagatha, Fogfighter and all who follow. Good timing on my part for the wide awake double dark brew and bagels. Gerry, I saw a blurb on the news this morning about the "heat wave" ... stay safe! Yes Connie, I also remember chewing on rhubarb stalks in our back yard. Our neighbor had a huge garden. Have a wonderful day everyone.

Good morning/day Dan, Connie, Gerry, Draclvr, Hagatha, and all. Yet a day with occasionally heavy rains. Thor made quite an impact too but he's expected to calm down now. Happy Tuesday Gameboomers

We've had unseasonably cold days but today is just about perfect, sunny and warm without being too hot. Got some more yard work done.
I'm plotting ways to get rid of most of my lawn. It looks awful, and I can't be bothered to spend any time and effort on it, so I'm looking for pretty ground cover ideas. The low-growing St. John's Wort appeals and it looks nice planted in masses. I'll consult with the landscaper about how to put a wide bed of it all the way around the inside of the fence, leaving a strip of lawn left to mow.
I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

I'm with you oldbroad! I played in puddles and the mud as a kid and still will take my shoes off and walk through one
Hagatha, St. John's Wort looks wonderful once it's established. But keeping it weeded until it takes over can be a pain!
I'm melting. Got my first wave of summer visitors - son and granddaughter - sent on their way back to Colorado this morning. Now, I'm moving beds and setting that room back up for the Germans who will be moving back here tomorrow. It's hot upstairs!
I had to start watering. Tomatoes need 1" of water per week and with no rain and this heat, just had to bite the bullet because they are blooming and setting tomatoes now. Watering all the perennial beds too. They look so nice and are all blooming like mad.
Gardens put to bed. Time for more reading and gaming.

Good Morning Connie, soot, Fogfighter, oldbroad, hagatha, Draclvr and everyone. Wide Awake Double Dark coffee is freshly brewed and awaits. Connie hope you dryer is fixed. Soot I remember eating raw rhubarb as a kid too...it was sour! Fogfighter hope you get to see some sunshine today. Oldbroad are heat wave will be lasting a few more days...yesterday we had "feels like" temp of 102 degrees! Hagatha I agree the less yard work the better. Draclvr keeping your garden going is so much work, but there is nothing like fresh picked tomatoes! Hope you all stay cool! Gerry

Baking pies used to be one of my weekly events - along with baking bread And the "sweet" pies regularly included rhubarb, gooseberry, raspberry, and of course, apple. All grown in the fruit section of our garden. Delicious !!

A sunny day with occasional clouds. Temperature a pleasant 20 degrees. I like that idea about low maintenance gardening. But agree own harvest tastes best. Not that I'm doing much gardening. Kudos to those of you who do. Happy Wednesday Gameboomers

Woo Hoo ... Good morning everyone. 1st of the summer morning chores are complete and it's time to enjoy a cup of Wide Awake Double Dark coffee and Danish from Gerry and Connie. Have fun at bingo tonight Connie...how is your dryer situation progressing? Sounds like wonderful weather Fogfighter...enjoy! Baking bread is one of our regular events Mad and grandson spices that up with brioche, ciabatta and focaccia on occasion. Gerry, one of our neighbors planted an assortment of shrubs with annual flower beds in his front yard...so annual trimming is all that's required. I've transitioned our backyard with native ground cover plants over the past 24 years. Next project out back will be an herb garden area for WOM. Have a wonderful Hump Day everyone 🐪

Good Wednesday morning! Still enjoying my DDWAB in the morning before it gets too got.
One more load of laundry and a few things in the bedroom upstairs and then I'm heading out to pull weeds in the pepper plants. It got too dry to pull weeds, but after the watering the last couple of days I can get in there and get them out. You can't tell where the pepper plants are!

That's what landscapers are for. I have enough energy to keep the place looking decent between monthly landscaper visits, and they do all the big stuff, like weeding large areas. Later in the summer when it gets dry and we can't use our irrigation systems, I'll have to water for about half an hour a day. So far my plan is working well enough. My garden isn't immaculate, but it looks pretty good.

hagatha, I am an avid gardener and 95% of my plants are natives. My garden is a registered Monarch Waystation. Please do not plant Saint Johns Wart. It is highly invasive and not native. This may help you decide Here. and Here. Your neighbors would not be happy with you with the way it spreads!

Wow, Ana. I had no idea about this plant being an invasive species! I stay away from them too. We are not a Monarch Waystation, but we have tons of them mostly because hubby practically cultivates a very large population of milkweed plants in the ditch and out in the pasture. and I have so many plants like coneflowers. When my purple phlox are blooming, they are covered with Monarchs and Swallowtails. I've counted 6 different species of Swallowtails at once on it.
