I just noticed this post in the adventure newsgroup. If it works, it's a perfect solution to anyone having trouble changing from CD 1. It's also useful for anyone who simply does not want to deal with the CD swapping.
Subject: Re: Zork Nemesis - is a full hard-disk install possible? From: Robert Gault
Yes, this is one of many games that can be made to fully install on a large hard drive.
First install the game in the normal fashion. Then copy the ZASSETS directory from each CDROM into the main Zork directory on your hard drive. Then look for the file nemesis.zix in the hard drive directory. This is a text file which needs to be edited so that the game won't look for CDs but rather the hard drive directory.
In nemesis.zix, you will see a list of DIR: and CD# entries. You need to edit all CD# entries so that they read DIR and you must add before each zassets a .\ The entries will then look like:
DIR: .\zassets DIR: .\zassets\global DIR: .\zassets\global\venus DIR: .\zassets\temple DIR: .\zassets\temple DIR: .\zassets DIR: .\zassets\global2 DIR: .\zassets\conserv DIR: .\zassets\monast DIR: .\zassets\global3 DIR: .\zassets\asylum DIR: .\zassets\castle DIR: .\zassets\endgame
That's all there is to it!
You should note that the game runs much too fast on modern systems. It will probably be necessary to disable all DirectX acceleration and use a program like CPUKiller as well.

Thanks Jenny, I love complete install, no spinning cd. Besides, how else do fill an 80gig hard drive? After fifteen months, 54gigs free. I will try it soon. Loved the game.

I wonder what the names of the "many" other games that can be installed to the harddrive might be(?) and how they might be done. It's obvious a simple copy and paste won't work.
I didn't do it......and if I did I'm not guilty!

I bought a utility program called 'CDAnywhere' sometime ago and have used it to copy CDs to my hard drive for a number of games including Tex Murphy 'The Overseer', RHEM and others.
You can create up to 23 virtual CD drives on your PC which means you can install quite a few games. Some of the games will not allow the use of a program like 'CDAnywhere' to copy the CD image to a hard drive and for that you would need to find out if there's an alternate way to copy the CDs or if there just isn't anyway to do it.
There's another program available to do the same thing but I can't remember the name of it right now.

A couple more: Faust and Reah. The procedure for Faust is here http://justadventure.com/CrashDomain/wt/completed/faust/faust.html Here is the procedure for Reah (also thanks to Robert Gault, who wrote the procedure for Faust)
Reah, a six CD game, can be installed to run from a hard drive. First run the normal installation procedure.
Now, each Reah disk has a Reah directory. Transfer the contents of each disk Reah directory into your hard drive Reah game directory. This will add information to the Anims and Sfx directories already on the hard drive.
Each CD also has a file Disc.id# in the root directory. Transfer each of these files to the root directory of the hard drive on which you installed the game.
During installation, a Reah icon was installed on your desktop. Right click on this and modify the .pif information under Properties. Look for a Path entry in the Target line. It will say Path=E:\Reah assuming E is your CDROM. Change this to point to your Reah game directory, ex. Path=E:\Games\Reah.
The game should now run from the hard drive and not ask for CD changes.

Wow Jenny, this is great information. I know that disc swapping is tedious for many people and this information will be very helpful. I agree with BillyBob that a new section located at the top of the page along with Walkthroughs, etc. would be great. Something like Full install games or CD to Hard Disk games, etc. etc. etc. I think you get my meaning. It could be alphabetized just like the walkthroughs. Keeping that information readily available would be wonderful instead of searching through past threads. That's just my 2 cents worth. :-) RB
Its one of those doors that needs a thingy thing.

Fresh from the adventure newsgroup: Amerzone This one requires you to edit the registry. Amerzone can be installed and run from a hard drive without using CDs.
Install the game in the normal fashion. Then copy from each CD a directory that starts with 0#VR to the Amerzone directory on your hard drive. Then search the Registry for an entry L'Amerzone. Expand this until you see and entry for Source. Make this entry exactly the same as the one indicating your hard drive directory.
The game will then run without CDs.

None of the above (games that only "see" one drive and that don't allow the hot key signal to reach CD-Anywhere for the change): Reah (thanks for the full installation tip!!) Traitors Gate I've heard that Virtual CD works better than CD-Anywhere when it comes to swapping CD images in a single drive from within the game. It's said to have a better designed hot key.

To Jenny - have followed Robert Gault's directions up to the nemesis.zix file and it shows on my PC as a windows file. Try as I might I cannot find a program in the "open list" that will open it so I can do the directories as Gault suggests. Do you know how I might e-mail him to see how he opened this file?

I never would have believed you could use Notepad but it worked! Hate to be an ignorant pest but now how do I keep the files that way? I changed every file to a DIR but when I went back, they had all changed back to their original lettering.
Tried saving but that did not work unless I did it wrong, tried a find and replace feature but that did not work either.
I am missing something here?

Ok Jenny understand and will follow through. Won one battle anyway - finally got my PC to recognize the disk in the drive in this game. Had been told that you play a disk from the drive where you install it. I always install on my DVD - never thought a burner would do installation. Had installed ZN on my DVDRom drive and for some reason out of desperation I guess, I put the disk in the burner driver - lo and behold the game started right up!!!! This is on WinXP. Of course still have the other problems of fast panning and disk changing but at least have some answers for those - just remains for me to struggle along with them.

Have a lot to learn about games, drives and installing yet I can see.
And are you ready for the big party?!!!! With your help and R. Gault I now have ZNemesis running on WinXP and playing away!!!!!!!
I did the changes of the zix. file, and I disable all the dx acceleration. These two things now have me playing without any disks, and no need to change disks and the fast panning has become manageable!!!!!
It has been a long hard learning struggle to get to this point and I owe it to you and Gault for the final finishing touches. Thanks so much for your patience, time and tips that enabled me to reach this point.

Have been playing ZorkN successfully up until the castle Irondune where I am in the lab trying to get Kaine's symbol made into metal. Have followed the WT word by word and get the message the metal is at optimum processing mode but cannot get the arm and fan to work so that the mold will turn into a metal. I followed Gault's procedure re putting all files on hard disk and altering some of them. Have had no problems up until now. Anyone have a clue here as to how I can proceed?

Hmmmmm well will keep on a truckin' and check out more sites for hints. Don't think it is in the temp guage place because I get the go ahead message to process the ore to metal symbol. If I learn anything will post - for others.

Our HINTS forum has had some threads about this very problem. It is a real tricky part, but when you get it done it is also a "DUH!!!' moment. If you are running out of time, hop the elevator up and back down and the timer starts again. Did you put the mold into the cauldron tray? Then solve the Reactor Cooling Pool Puzzle,(a BELL sounds when it is right) press the ARM button, when the hot iron comes out, press the FAN button, take the iron.

Hello desertlilac, I liked the start of this thread,ZN full install. I played this game two years ago on my WIN98. I thought that I would try the WINxp. I loaded up the game, downloaded the patches. I set comp.mode at WIN95 and 16bit graphic and started playing. I forgot all about Jenny100 and full install. I am now at the Conservatory playing instruments. I should be to Irondune by this evening. I have scraps of notes that I made before. I also used the help lady and the subtitles are nice. Also, to slow the fast side pan,I used the left/right arrow keys and mouse for left click foreword. Best Wishes, Rick
