== This just in == PRESS RELEASE A letter to players and professionals of the video game industry
RETURNS ON THE SYBERIA 3 ANNOUNCEMENT
Paris, April 17, 2009 - Following the countless messages and questions from fans which followed our announcement on April 1st regarding the launch of Syberia 3, Emmanuel Olivier, President of Microïds, gives more details on that announcement.
“Syberia 3 is not an April Fool's joke. The game is highly expected by the community of fans of adventure games and fans of Kate Walker and it will be launched, it is one of our most strategic projects at Microïds and we have been anticipating it for a long time.
It will be released on PC for sure, however, on PS3, this could actually turn into an April Fool’s joke because SONY is the only decision-maker on this point, as strange as it may seem to some people.
Benoît Sokal, the author of Syberia and Syberia 2, has mentioned several times in the press that he would only participate in a sequel to his masterpiece if he had enough financial means to design and develop an exceptional title. Today Microïds is ready to invest in this ambitious production. But everyone knows that to amortize the development costs of a major video game with that level of quality, it is essential to develop it for multiple platforms, PC and consoles.
However Sony Computer Entertainment has already censured Microïds in 2003 by denying that Syberia was released on PS2 in the United States though it had previously been released in Europe on that console. The same refusal happened for a dozen other Microïds titles for the U.S.
Beyond this censorship of the authors and their producers who believe in their creations and who take the financial risks when building up productions for the console without knowing whether they will be approved or denied by SONY in the last minute, the exorbitant royalties demanded by SONY to manufacture the games on its consoles seriously hamper the financing ability of independent producers. Microïds has paid more than 15 million Euros of royalties to SONY for its entire catalog, which represents 55% of the Microïds turnover for this platform. April Fools? Well no! It is unfortunately the “rule of the game” imposed by SONY.
The revenue shortfalls due to the PS2 games we were not able to sell in the United States, a highly significant territory, coupled with the excessive royalties paid to SONY for the European territories, have so far prevented Microïds from having the ability to reinvest in an ambitious sequel to the Syberia series.
So today we launch an SOS to all fans of the Syberia series: let us rally to support the independent creation and convince Sony to change its rules. Send all your messages of support to: supporToSyberia3PS3@microids.com
SYBERIA 3 on PS3, an April Fool’s? It’s up to SONY!”
Emmanuel Olivier President Microïds
Hmm now that I look at that email address, it may need an extra T? SupportToSyberia3PS3 sounds more logical?

Hi Pollo -- I moved your post so I could sticky it and people would more easily see the new information. I'm reading it a second time. It's not what I expected. Call me the April fool?

So, do I have it correct and interpret this to say that if Sony doesn't agree to a pS3 version, we don't get a PC version? Color me confused without a warm fuzzy feeling. Ana

Well, at one point he says that: It will be released on PC for sure but then he also says that they can't devote the resources needed for Benoit Sokal to develop the game unless they can publish it on several platforms. They are afraid to devote money to having the game developed on the PS3, because in the past they paid 15 million to SONY in order to do so, and then SONY at the last minute said that Microids couldn't release any of their games on the PS2 in the U.S. -- only in Europe. Did I get that right? ...have so far prevented Microïds from having the ability to reinvest in an ambitious sequel to the Syberia series. So perhaps they have started development, but in order to release the game with the ambition and scope they'd like, they need SONY to commit at the beginning of the project, not at the end? So if SONY doesn't commit, they'll still release a sequel, but perhaps without Benoit's involvement? Yes, I'm confused too.

Meh ps3, they are unpopular they would be far better going with Nintendo or Microsoft xbox's. Not like you need a powerful console for a adventure game anyway.
Also it seems pc will be made the whole message really is about them wanting ppl to get support to badger sony into wanting what they want so they can put it on ps3 console.

So this whole thing has been a rouse to garner support in Microids feud with Sony on the fees that they pay on all their titles. Sounds more like they are working more on getting Sony to lift their ban against them on North America than working on any Kate Walker adventures. I am not so sure how I feel about this but if it gets Microids back into the development of adventures then touché. And I am with Ana on not getting excited until it is installed on my computer.

I think they are trying to sort a deal to get it published by Sony, or another major console. They don't think it is financially viable just to publish on PC these days, but would a point and click sell well on a console I dont know (just look at Dreamfall). They are trying get as much money back as possible, so producing a game in all formats is a must in developer eyes. Even if they ruin to game to do so, by multi-formating it.
The adventure game genre is a niche, which is mainly pc, but the genre is spreading on other formats. I would'nt dream of playing a point and click on other formats, but multi-formatting games ruin them in my opinion. But at least Microids are thinking about Syberia 3 which can only be a good thing.

I wonder if the 15 million to SONY and the inability to sell Microids titles on the PS2 in North America is what put Microids out of business a couple of years ago, and hastened the ending of the original Still Life, which was under development at the time had to be wrapped up very quickly.
Skeeter -- just curious -- you'd prefer a Syberia 3 that was (for instance) shorter, or didn't have Sokal's involvement, or had fewer environments, as long as it was on the PC only?

Well to cut costs, id probs cut costs on the gfx so instead of paying money for fancy gfx id pay less for simpler graphics. And cut corners on the copy protection since its proven that no copy protection games sell just as well or better (stardock games) and maybe few less voice actors and less cinematic's.
There's always a way if you look hard without sacrificing too much quality.
But really instead of aiming for the ps3 they should aim for the psp, or ds or older generation consoles instead of latest cos its just a waste to put the adventure games on systems like ps3. ps2 or xbox 1 would do and be cheaper to get on them.
Plus with all console games they usually are terribly ported to pc and if syberia 3 is going multi platform u can bet its going to be consoles first THEN ported to pc as almost every multi platform game has been. Which results in lazy porting so loads of bugs, or control or ui issues and more. I hate multi platform with a passion for very good reasons.

Good point Becky Is this really about any further adventures of Kate Walker or is the intent a much larger picture for Microids trying to get all their other titles ported to PS3 and sold in North America. It may well be that Kate is being used in this instance as leverage to get Sony to release the ban. What do you think?

I have the versions of both Syberia 1 & 2 produced for the PS2. From what I can remember neither of them are entirely point & click - I think the character movement is similar to that in Dreamfall (if I've remembered correctly!) Maybe it didn't sell too well for the consol & that was the reason it wasn't published in NA in this format?

Hmm, I'm still thinking the April 1 announcement was a trial balloon waiting to see what the response would be. Trial balloons are like fishing expeditions to find out how much interest is out there and Syberia fans went for it "hook, line, and sinker" fersure. Also it gives the Microids name publicity for its other games, and there is no such thing as bad publicity according to press release sources. Should even help SONY in this case. This whole thing is kind of a *game* almost and rather interesting, but not too playable.
To love is to be happy with!

Hm, this announcement does not mention what the game is actually about. I suppose it's good news if it's being made for the PC irregardless. I would like to see a Syberia 3, but really I am satisfied with the way part two ended and would not be devastated if it didn't happen. If this one is being made as a point and click adventure game, then I am interested. If it is going to be a hybrid, I don't believe that would suit the game universe at all. Like many others, I am still not sure what to make of the news.

This is like a roller coaster ride up one moment down the next, twist one way, then another . I don't know what to believe and if I did, do I really understand it? . We are gamers, but this one is hard to solve . Well I hope that someday we will be able to play another Kate Walker game. And may it be a good one .
