> Walk North.
> Walk North until you come to the elf smoking a pipe.
> Talk to elf. Ask him if you can have the pipe. He will only give it to you if you give him something in return.
> Give elf gold ring from backpack. He gives you his pipe.
He is distracted by the beauty of the gold ring.
> Pick up gold coin (by his foot).

> Walk south.
> Walk east until you come to the young man playing the baguette.
> Talk to man. Complement him on his pink shirt. Ask about baguette. He needs money.
> Give him gold coin & get baguette.
> Walk West. > Walk South back to the 'courting' couple.
In inventory combine baguette with pipe to get baguette pipe.

EDIT: rotfl It looks like we are on the same wavelength Bernard!

After doing all that, do you find the Sacred Mirror of Kofun?

Excellent guess, LadyKestrel, but not this time.

Plaintiff strains of the bagpipe (also known as a baguette pipe) rise from the forest clearing. The young woman blinks, then smiles in the direction of the young man. He leans toward her. As their lips meet, you turn from the scene of this love story and notice that the elf has disappeared. On the snowy ground where once stood is a black tag that you vaguely remember used to be attached to the ring that you gave the elf. You pick it up and tiny words appear on the tag, as if written in flame: “Property of Sauron. Please return to the Tower of Barad-dûr, Plateau of Gorgoroth, Mordor, Middle Earth.”

You hear a shout from the young man in the pink shirt. He is waving at you angrily. The gold coin you gave him comes flying toward the air at you. You drop the tag and catch the coin. Upon closer inspection, you realize that chocolate is oozing from one side – it’s a chocolate coin covered in gold foil.

“That’s worthless!” shouts the angry pink-shirted young man. “Give me something more valuable or give me back my baguette!”

Wild Wild West ... uh, I mean ... Guess: Secret of Monkey Island? Due to the ship clue mostly.

To love is to be happy with!

> Pick Rose of Sharon (from bush near couple) OUCH! - It's thorny.
> In inventory combine thorny Rose of Sharon with uette to get uette with holes.
> Give uette with holes to angry man in pink shirt. He blows through it & it makes some interesting sounds but he's still not happy. "This is only half the range" he says.
> Give him the rose. It matches his shirt perfectly & he is so pleased he gives you his blue sweater.
> Pick up the black tag. You need to get that ring back from the elf - it's more important than you thought.

Hi Sierramindy – not Secret of Monkey Island (or Wild, Wild West either). lol

Suddenly, you see footsteps forming on the snow. The elf is still near, though invisible because of the power of the ring. The footsteps move rapidly to the East and the pink-shirted young man stumbles, apparently knocked aside by the now-invisble elf. A blizzard forms in the East and footsteps continue tromping through it.

“The elf is taking the Magnetic North Pole with him!” says the pink-shirted young man. As you stand in the clearing, stunned, a blizzard forms in the East. In the South the Rose of Sharon bush puts forth bright green spring leaves – the courting couple still kiss, oblivious to what's happening around them. The yellow maple leaves in the West turn green in a rolling wave of color, and the snow by the large pine tree melts, leaving only a layer of frost on the ground.

You put the tag back in your backpack along with the bagpipe, polished stick, melted chocolate coin and “Seasonal Change for Dummies.” You put on the blue sweater and follow the elf into the newly forming blizzard.

A fierce wind at your back blows you along and you find yourself practically flying down a wide avenue, similar to the Champs Elysées. The invisible elf turns down a side street and enters a café with wood paneling and gas lamps. A startled-looking group of students is whispering together in a corner, watching the snow blow through the open door.

Circle of Blood, while an interesting topic for the students to discuss, is not the answer.

lol

The elf suddenly becomes visible. He is standing across the room from you, near the fireplace. The time he has worn the ring has aged him, and his hair and beard are now silver-white. The green in his clothing is gone, leaving him attired only in crimson. A small cloud above his head sheds miniature snowflakes over his shoulders.

To the North is the elf. To the South is a paneled wall with a blackboard containing the café daily specials. To the East is a police inspector dressed in 19th century clothing. To the West is the café bar and the door to the street.

You turn to go West, and hear the elf chuckling behind you. He is moving about the room, and as he moves, the cardinal directions change. North, South, East, West, all are changing.

You are spinning in circles, trying to go West.

“My friend,” you hear the elf say. “I was stuck in that forest for 10,000 years. The ring gave me the power to leave. You have given me my liberty.”

The room stops spinning. The elf is gone. You are fairly certain that he did not exit through the door.

On the fireplace mantle is a large stone torch. Next to it is a sock, hanging from a nail.

Approaching the fireplace, you see that the gold ring is now in the sock. Looking up the chimney, you can see bricks jutting out at intervals that would allow you to climb up to the roof. Looking at the base of the chimney, you see a trap door, leading to the basement.

Can it be one of The Lord of the Ring series?? I have only played part of The Hobbit so it is a wild guess.

Sorry, the guesses aren't correct. I guess not many people have played this game?

You open up the trap door and descend down a ladder into the basement. You admire the two paintings and take one of them, which has a particularly tasty-looking peach in it. Having read the cafe's daily specials, you are hungry and are wondering if you are carrying something that could transform the peach into one that was actually edible.

Items in your backpack: a black tag with flaming letters, a bagpipe, a polished stick, a melted chocolate coin, a painting of a peach and “Seasonal Change for Dummies.”

There's another trap door in the basement floor. You open up the trap door and the smell of the sewers fills the basement. You hear shouts, commands to "stop in the name of the law" and for a brief moment you see a tall muscular man, carring the body of another man as he passes under the trap door, sloshing deeper into the sewer.

To the North is a hooked ladder leaning against the basement wall. To the South is a small window covered in dirt. To the East are several wine casks, some of them empty. On top of one cask is a surgical mask. At your feet is the open trap door.

You walk toward the window and notice a broken sword and a smoking mirror on the floor under the window. You pick up the sword, the blade fragments and the mirror and wonder: are these things the answer to the question that's been plaguing me for days now? Sadly, you realize that the answer is "no."

You wonder why the mirror is smoking, and realize that the smoke in the mirror is a reflection. Someone has built a fire in the fireplace above you, and the smoke is now seeping down into the basement!

You create a makeshift barricade using the wine casks to cover up the cracks in the trap door. The smoke seeps into the room more slowly now, but you still need to get out of there while you still can!

While holding the handkerchief to your nose and mouth, you grab the hooked ladder leaning against the North wall and hook it over the window ledge on the South wall. Climbing up the ladder, you use the broken sword to break the small window. You are coughing repeatedly, and sense that you are about to be overcome by the smoke.

The window is too small to accommodate you while carrying the backpack. You place the sword on the ground outside the window, drop the backpack onto the basement floor, crawl through the window, and collapse on the ground outside, breathing in the sweet Parisian air. There are loud noises and tremors coming from the basement behind you. Apparently some of the casks were not wine casks, but were barrels full of fireworks! Multicolored lights spray from the open basement window, and crowds of people from the street begin running toward the café.

Sword in hand, you crawl away around the corner. You are alive, but wondering if you will ever see your possessions again. All you have left is a handkerchief and a broken sword. Most important, though, you have finally answered the Ultimate Question.

Game Over
