Hello fellow Boomies

Well it's been one huge nightmare but I've decided to release Roanoke. I'm a little worried about releasing it but hopefully it will play fine. If not please be sure to let me know of any problems you have.

I'd just like to thank everyone for their support and encouragement over the years. This is my first attempt at making a game and hopefully it won't be the last. I'm hoping to release a demo soon of my next game called Terror Within Hawk Manor.

Here is the link for Roanoke, enjoy:

Good day all,

Hope everyone enjoys the game. By all means share this game with anyone you like

Doreen, I have a walkthrough written up if you want it. I used Winzip to zip the file. You can get it here:

Winzip

Hope this helps. I guess I should look for other ways to zip up Roanoke. Enjoy everyone. It's on to working on Terror Within Hawk Manor next. smile

"I used Winzip to zip the file."

I didn't know Winzip would extract .rar files. (I use another zip utility.) Learned something. Dorish, if you don't have Winzip, you can get a free .rar utility that will open the file by googling.

Sorry folks, I thought I was using Winzip then I checked and found that it was Winrar. I'll try to find something else to use to zip it with. If anyone has any suggestions I'm onboard.

OK. Downloaded and started - just a tiny bit of the first scene. Seems to be working fine.
The guy sure moves ultra-fast; speaks rather rapidly also!

Did you say that there is a walkthrough available --- and if so where can we download it?

Good day fellow Boomies

Wow, of all things I never thought unzipping would be the biggest problem. Sorry about that folks. If anyone needs it you can get the walkthrough here:

Roanoke Walkthrough

It's not a great walkthrough, I created it for the testers. I'm not well today, so I was hoping to take the day off. Let me know if you have any problems and I'll see what I can do. Enjoy the game everyone

Hi Mad

Thank you. Yes this flu is a doozy. I'm trying to get a cup of hot lemon juice in me so I can sweat the rest of the flu out.

Erwin over at Adventure Developers did an excellent write up about Roanoke over there, and he put a Wiki link about the history of Roanoke if anyone is interested in taking a look

Roanoke Write Up

Hope everyone is enjoying the game. I would like to hear from someone who finishes it. I would like their thoughts on the game.

Well I'm off, tomorrow if I feel better I may start working on that demo of Hawk Manor. Take care everyone

Hope you are feeling better Starlite. I just finished the game and really enjoyed it.I had the walkthrough. It really helped when I was trying to get coins for the payphone. I would never have thought to do that in inventory-don't want to spoil it for others. Good luck with your next venture, and congrats on this one. My son is in animation, so I know how much work goes into something like this.

Good day fellow Boomies

I feel as though I've been hit by a truck.

Congrats in finishing the game Doreen and that you enjoyed it. Hubby warned me about the wallet and he doesn't play adventure games. But he said he's going to play Roanoke.

What did you think of the music. Also, how often did you use the walkthrough. Were there parts of the game you didn't like that you feel the game could have done without.

Sorry for all the questions but this is my first game and I'm trying to do learn how to do things better for my next games.

I know the animation in the music videos was pretty bad, but I don't know how to do animation and couldn't get any help, so I had to struggle as best I could with it. It was pretty good when the engine accepted avi files but then the engine was changed and the playavi was removed so the avi had to be converted to Flash and that's why the videos were blurry. I apologize for that. The videos didn't do Lisle's music justice.

I would like to thank everyone for downloading and playing Roanoke and I hope you will enjoy my next game. Take care everyone

Hi StarLite,

I enjoyed the music, and the story line was good. The game pretty much tells you where you have to go next. I found the music animation scenes a bit long, but that's me, impatient to get on with the game. The main thing I did not like were the voices of Anna, Mary, and Ahnya and her sister--hope you don't mind me saying that after all your hard work.

Good day fellow gamers

@Doreen, thank you for your comments on Roanoke. I'm glad you liked the music. If I decide to do another game, I will not be using music videos or long animation like that again. I'm not good with animation.

I don't blame you not liking the voices, especially the Prague sisters, they were really hard to do, as you can tell when Tanya says, "some say" I got a bit off key there.

A lot of voice credit has to go to poor Heavy Early. He did hundreds of text and trying to disguise his voice every time. It was so hard to get him to say "ing", so I had to leave in words like goin.

The next game I'm going to get someone over at Adventure Developers to look at it. I don't want to keep putting out bad games. I want people to be able to enjoy them.

Well I'm off to make the rounds. Take care and thank you for playing

StarLite, no such thing as a "bad game" if you put your heart and soul in it. I have not had the opportunity to play yet, but I know that I certainly could not have come close to what you have done and you should be proud of yourself. Everything is a learning experience. I think it's great you are following your dream. That is the only way to succeed and be happy.

StarLite, this in no way was a bad game. If it had been, I would not have played it through to the end. I think you did a wonderful job on it, and I admire you for having such great talent, and for being able to bring this game to fruition. How many other people can achieve what you have---not many I'll bet. You should be so proud of yourself and think back to when the idea first came to you and the fantastic progress you have made from then until now when you have a viable completed game that can bring pleasure to others. I hope my comments in my last post did not hurt your feelings in any way, as that most certainly was not my intention, and I sincerely apologise if they did.

Good morning fellow Boomies

Thank you Ana and Doreen for your kinds words and the vote of confidence. There is always room for improvements. I'm anxious to get started on my next game. I have to wait till this flu leaves, it just keeps hanging on. I'm thinking on making one of those hidden object games sometime

@Doreen, there's no need to apologize, I was in no way offended that you didn't like those 4 voices, I didn't like the Prague sisters myself, I was trying to go for a Young Frankenstein's Frau Blucher but couldn't pull it off. It's funny when I'm doing her lines I can sound exactly like her. If there was a theater play of Young Frankenstein I would love to play her part.

Not to worry about criticism, I do welcome it, it's the only way to learn. For instance I was told a few things by developers about the game that I know now not to do with my other games, so that helped. Please don't worry I wasn't offended at all. Sorry if I made you feel that way

The toughest thing for my next game is going to be learning a new game engine. I might be in luck though. I'm going to go with Wintermute for my next game, and they have an area on their forum where programmers offer their help with games.

I was going over Hawk Manor last night and changed a few things. I'm going to write up a list of things for people to answer that will help me with it.

I really appreciate everyone's comments and encouragements. I didn't mean for that last message to sound like a cry baby I just meant that I wanted to learn so that I don't put out any bad games in the future. But I'm guessing there's bound to be one

Well I'm off to make the rounds, so far so good on the flu battle front, it seems to be tapering off. Take care for now
