Hi everybody. I have Win XP and I finally got DSOM to work correctly on my PC. Here's how: I installed the TEXT PATCH as mentioned. I also went to DXDIAG>Display, and disabled DIRECT DRAW. Also, I went to COMPATIBILITY mode where I right clicked on the LAUNCH.EXE icon, chose PROPERTIES>COMPATABILITY, UN-checked the top selection, CHECKED 256 colors, checked 640X480, checked all the remaining items. After doing all of that, I returned to the game, and I'm enjoying playing it. NOTE: When you are finished playing a game session, don't forget to RE-ENABLE DIRECT DRAW in DXDIAG. Sanford

Hi Sanford. I knew I couldn't be the only one unable to get this patch to simply work. I just saw this today and I've still got DSOM up here so I will try it your way. Thank you for posting your fix whether it works or not, but I think it will.
Oh well, I guess I have another place I can play the game, and it's not that important for me to get it to play properly on my XP. I did everything mentioned two or three times and absolutely nothing worked. Picture and sound are excellent, but still nothing helped with the dialog part. It's a great game and worth it for others to try getting it to work for them!

WinterFury has developed an addition fix for those who had a little trouble getting the game to run and had to disable video acceleration... For those of you who have to disable video acceleration to make DSOM work, I've made a small patch which forces the game to use hardware emulation only, preventing it from using any hardware-supported features. The result should be exactly the same as disabling hardware acceleration, only the patch won't affect any global settings in your system (so you don't have to restore anything after playing the game). The patched game dll is in this archive . Open your DSOM\Bin folder, find the file named xvideoio.dll and make a backup copy of it. Then copy the patched xvideoio.dll from the downloaded archive to DSOM\Bin I recommend you use the patch only if the game doesn't work properly on your system unless hardware acceleration is disabled completely. Don't use it otherwise.

I apologize for resurrecting what is, by all accounts, a dead, year-old thread, but I wanted to thank Greyfuss for this post, which I just discovered. I have been wanting to play Dark Side of the Moon for over ten years. By all accounts, it sounds like it has the potential to be one of my favorite adventures. I purchased the game when it first came out, but never got around to playing it. By the time I did, I had Windows XP and discovered the text issue. I had lost all hope of ever playing the game, but now it seems that I have a new opportunity. So, THANK YOU, Greyfuss! You just made my month!

Its a great game in my book CB. I find that it looks better on a CRT Monitor rather than an LCD. If you have one see if you can notice the difference.
Oh...and you should be thanking Winterfury at AG for this as it is he that after all these years solved this problem

Doesn't seem like the link is working anymore?

Hi Winfrey The link to riched.dll file needed to see the text and play the game on XP still works but, you are right, the patched one he made for those who have this problem has been removed...I don't know why. I would hope that anyone that does have this additional problem could contact Winterfury at Adventure Gamers and they could help.
The patched game dll is in this archive. Open your DSOM\Bin folder, find the file named xvideoio.dll and make a backup copy of it. Then copy the patched xvideoio.dll from the downloaded archive to DSOM\Bin
I recommend you use the patch only if the game doesn't work properly on your system unless hardware acceleration is disabled completely. Don't use it otherwise.

Worse than not being able to find this game, I know where it is ...I sold it years ago!! And I no longer have XP moved on win 7.
I REALLY want to play this game and I remember being really upset that it would not play..boo hoo.. I reckon GOG should do a purchasable download for it, I expect it is quite hard to find nowadays.

Yup, that's what I purchased! The first time, I just had the regular CDs, but I read about all the disc swapping, and the DVD version wasn't that expensive on Amazon Marketplace, so I nabbed it.

Someone at the GOG forum named "lugum" got it running on Windows 7 x64. https://www.gog.com/forum/general_archive/dark_side_of_the_moon_suggestionrequestThat was back in 2014. Make sure you have the correct riched.dll file. There are several riched.dll files and they don't all work for this game. I don't know if the riched.dll file included in the DSOM_text_fix.zip that Marian found is the correct riched.dll file. And I don't know if Windows updates have disabled the fix.
