Well, everyone has different opinions, but I enjoyed Zork Nemesis, the only other Zork adventure that I have played. It's definitely going "over to the dark side" when compared to Grand Inquisitor. It's a bit gruesome in places, but not as much as Sherlock Holmes-The Awakened, or Still Life. I agree with the review here on Gameboomers - it is rich and immersive with good FMV scenes, and with surprisingly good graphics, considering how old the game is. I needed help from the w/t, but then I usually do. It's definitely a Grade A game, but I'm glad I played it before I played Grand Inquisitor. IMHO, I would definitely put it on my "to play" list. I've not played many FMV's - GK2-The Beast Within, Yoormurjak's Ring, and the Zork games and I'm glad I played each and every one of them. One humble player's opinion - hope it helps.

"It's a bit gruesome in places, but not as much as Sherlock Holmes-The Awakened, or Still Life."
Oy vey! That sounds like quite a jump from being totemized. <g>
Truthfully, I'm not too crazy about FMV games even though I agree with you on those you've named, but Zork Grand Inquisitor has lived up to eveything you guys have said about it so I expect Zork Nemesis will, too. Maybe I'll just save it for a few days so I'm not as likely to compare the two as I play. Oh, well, heck, I know I will but I do want to enjoy it for what it is and not gloom over what it ain't, if that makes sense.
Thanks, LadyCav, that does help.
Gil.

Wise One -- I have never played Zork Nemesis for the very reason you name -- how could it live up to Zork Grand Inquisitor? I hope you do play Nemesis and report back on the experience and whether it is as good a game as Inquisitor is. Back to ZGI: I'm seriously stuck with the torn scroll pieces in the mirror room. I don't remember having trouble when I played this years ago. But then again, that was years ago. My brain was probably fresher then.
I got half of the scroll way early on, and just picked up the second half of the scroll. I don't remember which is which in terms of reversement. I've placed both parts of the scroll on the window ledge in the mirror room. I thought this would reverse them, but now I wonder if I've reversed the reversement.
I'm confused.
How do you put the scroll back together?

Becky, I've slept since then, but I think you have to... go through the door, cross the bridge and repair the scroll in the processing room.

Boss, All I did was put the torn scroll pieces on that thing that looks like a paper cutter in inventory. Now I can't remember if I 'looked' at them or not. Figures. Well, duh, of course I looked at them, that's automatic. In the mirror room, that is. It's too early for me. And another edit: But LadyCav's right, I think. The together scroll still has to be spell checked. Gil.

Zork Nemesis has a very dark storyline and some pretty potent puzzles. And I really like it myself. But it isn't at all like Zork Grand Inquisitor. A much more serious experience Also, if you truly want to experience "death by Grue" you might like to try Return to Zork (which GOG has tweaked and released). Lots of fatal Grue moments in that one

Potent puzzles? Ah...maybe I'll change that few days wait to a couple of weeks. Screw up my courage for all those grues. Gil.

I played Zork Nemesis many moons ago - like when it came out ! - I remember I had a hard time with it mainly because I played the previous Zorks and Nemesis was nothing like them. It wasn't the story or graphics but more the puzzles threw me a curve if I recall.
It kept me from playing Grand Inquisitor because I needed a "lighter" game at the time.
I am having a ball with Grand Inquisitor now !! It's a really FUN game to play!
It's not the years honey, it's the mileage!

I'm back making progress. Yes, you combine the scroll pieces on the thing that looks like a paper cutter but has a magnifying glass instead of a blade (made by Frobozz Electric -- We Bring Bad Things to Light).
The scroll refused to combine, though, at first because I think I had gone overboard with putting the pieces of the scroll on the window ledge in the mirror room, then getting them down with the snap dragon. It was just so much fun to hit the trampoline plant thing with the hammer! I messed with it several times. (Confession is good for the heart and soul. That is what my heart tells me.) I think I had to reverse the reversement on one of the pieces. Or perhaps I needed to re-reverse or de-verse one of them. That is, the pieces of the scroll have to match in terms of reversement or (possibly) non-reversement, before they can be combined on the Frobozz Magnifying Paper Cutter Thingie. You can ignore me if I appear to have no idea of what I'm doing. If you think I know what I'm doing, you should probably ignore me even harder.

Oh, man, I tried getting the torn scroll your way and deeply regretted it! Now I know that you can save yourself a LOT of grief if you retrieve that half of the scroll before you get past Harry. Oh, btw, Boss, you remember saying that you couldn't remember a game where you tried to walk forward and went backward instead? Well, here's another one! Gil.

Lady K -- what a great name for a dog! Has his/her name been an influence on behavior? Let's put it this way. He's the kind of dog who would chew on throcked grass, fetch rocks for Brog, and wrestle and bounce with the snapdragon. He also makes us laugh. Lady K, was that your dog that sat on me while I was in New Jersey? I don't think he understands the command, "Off!" I wouldn't put it past him. He'd also love to play in the Totemizer.

I hate to disappoint you, Boss and colpet, but I played a bit of Nemesis and decided I'm not in the mood for it yet. The feel isn't a little different, it's a lot different. Lonely. Gloom city as far as I got. So I'm on the road to West Shanbar in Return to Zork. Zork Grand Inquisitor was just such a high that RtZ is going to have to go some to live up to it...but hey, more screwy people to talk to! Speaking of talking, ZGI has great acting/voice work. Frankly, I'd never appreciated Dirk Benedict (Antharia Jack) before but I do now. Michael McKean (Dalboz) and Eric Avari (the GI) were terrific and I can't think of one of the other characters who wasn't absolutely right. Well, the unseen guards in the tent did remind me of Activision geeks who were reading their lines and getting a huge kick out of it but that was fun, too. Whatta game! I'll echo everybody else, if you haven't played ZGI, what are you waiting for? Gil.

We are so happy to see so many of you having fun playing ZGI. It is one of our very favorite games (we named it our Game of the Year that year), and both Lela and I can be found in the credits as testers. If you were to ask Laird who he heard from the most during testing, we're sure he would say us. But I'm afraid that one old guy (like me) lost his appearing role in the game because of us. He was originally sitting outdoors on a rocker giving you, the vacuum cleaner salesman, a very hard time, and then he left and went indoors. The only problem was that, even though he was now supposed to be indoors, we could always still see him sitting in that rocker from other views looking down the alley. The next thing we knew was that, shortly thereafter, he was giving you a very hard time from indoors only, unseen. I guess they couldn't figure out how to get rid of the other views of him in the rocker without removing his personal appearance altogether. We always felt bad about that. We liked that old codger. We're also replaying the game now thanks to GOG. I forgot to add that Yes, this was the last Zork. Activision, unfortunately sat on this game and did not publicize it or get it out onto store shelves. They essentially killed it and placed all their time and money into games like Battle Zone. Such a shame. Bill and Lela

Mr. Bill -- I didn't know you and Lela were testers for this game! What fun that must have been. At least the old codger didn't get abandoned inside a magical creature in the middle of the ocean! I still feel bad about the character who trustingly gives me so he can get ingredients for a pina colada. What choice did I have, though? It was either his pina colada or me returning magic to Zork! Which was more important? I do picture him standing there, with the ice melting in his glass, wondering what happened to Wise One -- perhaps Zork Nemesis would be a good game to play on Halloween?

For anyone who's been resisting Zork Grand Inquisitor, everything Zork is on sale at GOG this weekend for 40% off. Only $3.59 for this great, funny game!
