I thoroughly enjoyed this game!! Funny, clever, witty, peppered with hilarious humor. It was a blast to play. happydance

I played on default panning speed, and only once did the panning slow to a crawl in one scene in Hades. Other than that, it was perfect.

So glad that GOG got this game. What a huge difference from Zork Nemesis. smile

A question for you guys. I'm playing on a wide screen monitor (1600 x 900) and the game looks somewhat pixellated - not unendurably even if I am fairly sure Dirk Benedict could look better - but I was wondering if changing the screen resolution would do anything for it?

I hate changing the resolution, Windows always grumbles at me and then I have to put it back (so lazy) but I will if it will help.

It's an older game, and the pixelation (as far as I know) is a result of the technology at the time the game was created.

But perhaps someone else has toyed with the settings and found an improvement?

Well, I tried changing the resolution and there was no discernible difference. It's really no big thing and it certainly won't put me off finishing this really funny game. Unfortunately, "totemized" and "Who's the boss of you?" have already crept into my vocabulary and will probably make all my non-gamer friends and acquaintances (which is everybody but one guy who plays shooters) think I'm screwier than ever. <g>

Sometimes the simplest answer is the correct one. Dunn Tawkin, had I paid more attention to your comment about the mouse speed I mught have saved myself some frustration. Reread this discussion paying more attention and tried it. Problem solved. Thank you.

Now I'm off - have a score to settle at the bottom of the well...

Oh, you are gone for sure, sureshot. Lol! Not that I should talk. I sometimes catch myself crooning to things I want the way Manny did when he was after those pigeon eggs: "Come to me, little ones...." grin

I'm behind you all a bit, but have recently whacked the snap dragon in a most satisfactory manor. I have added a totemized dragon to my holdings! If I de-totemize him, will he turn me into jelly? I am quaking at the prospect! It's been so many years since I played this game that I don't remember all the traps it lays.

I let the grue eat me again and am surprised that the game allows me a whole 5 points for acting like a complete idiot.

I have no clue what the dragon will do to you since I can't figure out how to de-totemize him.

Where did you find that grue? I haven't run into him yet. I wanna be eaten by a grue!

You find the grue

at the very beginning of the game if you use the rope to go down the well before you've picked up the lantern.

There may be others later in the game also.

I absolutely loved this game back in the day. I still have WIN XP on my 5-yr old Dell. Will it play on XP systems without resorting to DOS stuff?

I got into Hades! Really, I'm so proud of myself for even realizing that phone was handing me a puzzle...and I solved it! Now I'm trying to get out. Hmmm....

Becky, your comment about getting 5 points for acting like a complete idiot made me think. Is it possible that the bigger idiot you are the better you score? Whoohoo! I'm going to win bigtime!

Edit: I'm out! I tried something really, really, really stupid and it worked! So does that make me less of an idiot or more of one?

In cases such as this, it's important to listen to your heart. What does your heart tell you? flowers

Now, hold that thought!

If stupidity works, doesn't that mean it's a kind of wisdom? grin

"...it's important to listen to your heart."
Right now, I'm trying to figure out if that's a hint. Is that a hint? That is a hint. Gotta be.

"If stupidity works, doesn't that mean it's a kind of wisdom?"
Then you may address me as "O Wise One" from now on. I think I've got to go back to Hades. Shoot.

But I have been totemized every way you can think of! There's that. I think my favorite place to end up was New Jersey. grin

I love this game, and I even named my dog Zork in honor of it. My advice is to try everything, even if the signs tell you not to do it. Just make sure you save before you do. smile (And yes, being totemized can be fun.)

Lady K -- what a great name for a dog! puppy Has his/her name been an influence on behavior?

O Wise One -- two other great places to act idiotically (is that even a word?) are right in front of GUE Tech, where you can choose to
Click to reveal..
leap into the bottomless pit and also Throck the grass (though not both at the same time).

Saving first is a good idea, especially since, in my game, insult was added to idiocy and I experienced a crash after the text explanations when I tried to restore my game.

Perhaps certain kinds of stupidity simply can't be recovered from easily?

I also think it's sweet that Charon won't accept bribes. I tried to give him a nice tip of 498 zorkmids, and he wouldn't accept it. Either paper currency doesn't work in Hades, or Charon is painstakingly honest.

Boss of Me, (I trust you don't mind me being so familiar)

The game crashed on me quite a few times toward the end, always when I was trying to restore or save but by then I was having so much fun that I just went merrily on and reopened it if it did. A funny thing, too, I found out that if the game was slow to load on my computer and the little circular 'working, working' icon sat there for more than two or three seconds before it did, that it would crash, almost right away. My fix for that was just to tell the computer that, no, I didn't want it to load. The next time I clicked on the icon, it would load quickly and run just fine. Fortunately, you get into the game again fast after Activision implodes so I never had to sit there going, "Yeah, yeah, enough with this already, restore!"

I had a ball and I can't leave it alone! I'm going back now and try every last thing on Mr. Bill's list that I missed before. If this game weren't already on the All-time Hall of Fame List, I'd be fussing to put it there. What a hoot!

Lady K, was that your dog that sat on me while I was

in New Jersey? I don't think he understands the command, "Off!" razz

My XP plays the regular game nicely, but Hades was always a challenge trying to escape! The PC seemed to suddenly show its grits and speed up A LOT. I ALWAYS had to mess around there trying and retrying to get back to the boat. Thank you guys very much for making me want to replay this one. Most likely will. Sorry to hear about the crashing, Traveler. The ending sometimes messed with me, too, though not as twitchy as the Hades escape.

Well, you know, BubbaJake, I didn't have any problems in Hades the first time around but the second time, all of a sudden, the game slowed down to a crawl just as it did for LadyCav. As usual, my fix was to close out and reopen the game so it was no biggie. And honestly, even with the occasional speed problem and crash, I'm just glad I can play this game on Win 7. It is total fun!

Gil.

Like you said, "no biggie". I never had a crash, but did save often. The only time I had slow panning movement was when panning from the skeleton in the boat back over to the two headed monster just before leaving Hades. After that, all was fine. Since there have been so many GM problems over at bfg, I may just have to replay this, as it was so much fun. I never met a Grue, though (and I want to) or got totemized, but I did "throck the grass" and unexpectedly died. That taught me to save often! smile

Let me ask you, LadyCav (or whoever has an opinion), is this a good time to play Zork Nemesis? I'm not sure that going from the crazy humor of ZGI to the darker (I'm told) game isn't going to put me off enjoying Nemesis. So what do you think?
