For all those new boomers, and for the rest of us a year older, its that time where we answer the question for a newbie player "If I want to play an adventure game, what would you recommend".

Playability is the key. Your oldie but completely impossible to get going on a modern machine favourite game might therefore not make the list, and variety might dictate that not every Myst clone should be included.

But in the end its up to you - if you think a game you have played is worth recommending to someone else to play, you can put it on your list. But only if its an adventure game. We know what they are (Quake no, Monkey Island yes) and there is some latitude for those fuzzy round the edges games that are hard to define.

There are some rules though, but first an announcement.
For the last few years, The Lost Crown has topped the list and its always done well since its release. We have therefore decided that it is worthy of a spot in the Hall of Fame
This has consequence, which brings us back to the rules:

1. Games in our Hall of Fame are ineligible, on the basis that we know they are worth playing else why would they be in there. Votes for those games won't be counted. Those games are:

(being ineligible means you can spread your choices more widely, and we will list the Hall of Fame games alongside this years results when finished).

2. You can recommend a maximum of 20 games. You can choose to recommend less.
3. You cannot recommend a series. If you want to recommend all the Tex Murphy games, that will take 5 seperate recommendations, one for each game.
4. Episodic adventures will be counted as one game, and regardless of where they are up to in the series. These include Sam & Max Season 1, Sam & Max Season 2, Sam and Max - The Devils Playground, Wallace & Grommit, Strong Bad, Casebook, AGON, Tales of Monkey Island, Enter the Story, Back to the Future, City of Secrets, Adams Venture and Dream Machine.
5. Uru and its add ons will be counted as one game.
6. BadMojo and the Redux version are one game.
7. Directors cuts and Special Releases will be counted as the same game.
8. Adventure games only (Dark Side games and Casual games get their own lists).
9. PC games please (although if you sneak a console game in I won't tell)

If at all possible, please list in alphabetical order - it makes counting so much easier. In doing so, ignore "the" (so The Dark Eye would be under "D" for Dark)

The thread stays open for about 3 weeks, and I will post updates as we go. Also, avoid editiing your lists after posting because Chief and I count as we go, and may miss a change.

Some of these (like Morpheus, Obsidian, and Shivers) might have to be played inside Virtual PC on 64-bit Windows 7. But a newbie to gaming isn't necessarily a newbie to running Virtual Machines, so I'm including these games anyway. I'd like to have included Schizm 2, but it had that problem with saving in the elevator level causing a dead end. Though I love all the RHEM games, I'm just including my favorite, RHEM 2, which was the "easiest" for me overall (not that any of them were easy).

Wincey, I wish I was. That would be cool. I could cure all ailments. I would be known as the first person who found a cure for AIDS, and it would be a simple recipe: crocodile tongues, snake's venom, a toenail from an ex-boyfriend or girlfriend and Evian water. A voodoo lady needs a sponsor. The cost of living isn't cheap you know.

Unfortunately, I'm not. I've just looked at the screenshots and the trailers, and I thought it looked like a great game. I'm going to get it off of Gamersgate when it comes out. I agree, and I think the same about Obsidian -- another unique and amazing game. But GK1 is probably easier to get now that GOG and DotEMU both have DRM-free versions, updated to run on newer computers, available to download.

About a dozen games with 5 or more votes so far, and all the recent Sherlocks seem to be doing well.
Isabelle is clearly biding its time.

When exactly does a game makes it to the hall of fame? What threshold needs to be achieved?

Also, I understand the hall of fame is a reflection of the games that received the most votes over the years, but for the other games, how difficult would it be, if at all possible, to not only bring us this year's most preferred ones, but also an overall view compilation of all previous years as well?

We decided to add Lost Crown this year as even though it doesn't have the longevity of some games, it has been top of the List the last two years and has only ever had Hall of Fame games finish in front of it. We debated waiting another year, but agreed it was a worthy entrant despite its "newness".
Not sure what you mean by a compilation, but as the counter and compiler with Chief my initial reaction is

I just fainted and I don't even do it. Maybe a look at the Annual Games Recommendations in the Archives could sub for a (shudder) compilation.

It's great to see Yoomurjak's Ring on so many lists. I think it's a classic, maybe one day a hall of fame entrant.

I really enjoyed playing Yoomurjak's Ring. Will there be a sequel? On the Private Moon Studios website it says it's "the first in the line of Jonathan Hunt Adventures."

A sequel would be nice, or 14 Private Moon is one of my favorite active developers.

And the second game is planned, based on this novel, so let's hope everything goes well!

This was my favourite Carol Reed too Jema. I'd really like MDNA to make a much longer game and maybe with some FMV, I think they could do something great. Although I'd still want my yearly dose of Carol

I remember when it first game out I thought the graphics and music were as good as it gets.

Just logged on and clearly better get back to counting.
I give fair warning though that if Esther thinks she is ending up in front of everyones favourite girly named game, I may have to do something dastardly!

gamern, the casuals gave their own list in January. The MCF series is certainly a favorite amongst the casual crowd.

Wow, Sureshot, you reminded me of 'Midnight nowhere.' There was some problem or so, I hadn't been able to move ahead in this game, when I had played it some years back. I guess I have to replay this after all these years. I think I had liked the atmosphere of this game; so much like Silent Hill series or a psychological movie I guess.

Hi Hugh - it's one of those games that somehow just grabbed my attention! I would replay it too if there weren't so many games in my queue. It did play free of hitches on my XP system.

I guess I have to get XP back somehow on some system. This game, like many other cool things, isn't working on windows 7.

So difficult when there are so many wonderful older games....but will include a couple newer ones.

I thought it was a funny and interesting game- I was hoping they'd continue making them, but it appears they're doing a film now. You can download the "Sektor 1 and Sektor 2" games at the link traveler posted.

Have to check it out then.

Actually, I just checked the rules and it doesn't say you can't recommend the same game more than once - so guess what that means
