And we're off!

For all those new boomers, and for the rest of us a year older, its that time where we answer the question for a newbie player "If I want to play an adventure game, what would you recommend".

Playability is the key. Your oldie but completely impossible to get going on a modern machine favourite game might therefore not make the list, and variety might dictate that not every Myst clone should be included.

But in the end its up to you - if you think a game you have played is worth recommending to someone else to play, you can put it on your list. But only if its an adventure game. We know what they are (Quake no, Monkey Island yes) and there is some latitude for those fuzzy round the edges games that are hard to define.

There are some rules though, but first an announcement.
For the last few years, The Lost Crown has topped the list and its always done well since its release. We have therefore decided that it is worthy of a spot in the Hall of Fame yay bravo devilchili
This has consequence, which brings us back to the rules:

1. Games in our Hall of Fame are ineligible, on the basis that we know they are worth playing else why would they be in there. Votes for those games won't be counted. Those games are:

Amerzone
Black Mirror
Dark Fall: The Journal
Gabriel Knight: The Beast Within
Grim Fandango
Longest Journey
Lost Crown
Myst
Riven
Sanitarium
Syberia
Syberia 2
Timelapse
Zork Nemesis
Zork Grand Inqusitor

(being ineligible means you can spread your choices more widely, and we will list the Hall of Fame games alongside this years results when finished).

2. You can recommend a maximum of 20 games. You can choose to recommend less.
3. You cannot recommend a series. If you want to recommend all the Tex Murphy games, that will take 5 seperate recommendations, one for each game.
4. Episodic adventures will be counted as one game, and regardless of where they are up to in the series. These include Sam & Max Season 1, Sam & Max Season 2, Sam and Max - The Devils Playground, Wallace & Grommit, Strong Bad, Casebook, AGON, Tales of Monkey Island, Enter the Story, Back to the Future, City of Secrets, Adams Venture and Dream Machine.
5. Uru and its add ons will be counted as one game.
6. BadMojo and the Redux version are one game.
7. Directors cuts and Special Releases will be counted as the same game.
8. Adventure games only (Dark Side games and Casual games get their own lists).
9. PC games please (although if you sneak a console game in I won't tell)

If at all possible, please list in alphabetical order - it makes counting so much easier. In doing so, ignore "the" (so The Dark Eye would be under "D" for Dark)

The thread stays open for about 3 weeks, and I will post updates as we go. Also, avoid editiing your lists after posting because Chief and I count as we go, and may miss a change.
Batter up!

It's a really good game, great atmosphere. Though it looks like I'm alone in liking text adventures around here!

Remember to double check the Hall of Fame games in flotsam's first post of the thread before placing your votes, everyone. smile I'm noticing a few games pop up which aren't eligible for voting!

Thanks Flotsam. This is a great idea. One game I'm looking forward to is Dark Eye: Chains of Satinav. I think that would be #21 on my list. If I had more room I would also add the Monkey Island games and Tale of a Hero.

Hi sijacki,

The Annual List isn't about games that are worthy and forgotten, though, it's about games that we'd recommend to other gamers because we've played them and like them and wouldn't mind seeing some of them in the Hall of Fame!

Wow! I keep saying to myself, GK: Sins of the Fathers hasn't made the Hall of Fame yet! So I keep on voting for it. Hope springs eternal! grin

  • 7th Guest (GOG or DotEMU version)
  • Aura (DotEMU version)
  • Atlantis 2 (aka Beyond Atlantis)
  • Book of Unwritten Tales
  • Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers (GOG or DotEMU version)
  • Lost Horizon
  • Moment of Silence
  • Morpheus
  • Myst 3: Exile
  • Obsidian
  • Return to Mysterious Island
  • RHEM 2
  • Riddle of the Sphinx
  • Safecracker 2006
  • Schizm (aka Schizm: Mysterious Journey)
  • (The) Secret of Monkey Island (original version in ScummVM or original version in LucasArts version that's updated to run on newer systems)
  • Sentinel: Descendents in Time (aka Realms of Illusion)
  • Shivers
  • Still Life
  • Uru

Some of these (like Morpheus, Obsidian, and Shivers) might have to be played inside Virtual PC on 64-bit Windows 7. But a newbie to gaming isn't necessarily a newbie to running Virtual Machines, so I'm including these games anyway. I'd like to have included Schizm 2, but it had that problem with saving in the elevator level causing a dead end. Though I love all the RHEM games, I'm just including my favorite, RHEM 2, which was the "easiest" for me overall (not that any of them were easy).

That is a very high recommendation indeed, and before it's even out yet! Are you sure you're not the voodoo lady?

Wincey, I wish I was. That would be cool. I could cure all ailments. I would be known as the first person who found a cure for AIDS, and it would be a simple recipe: crocodile tongues, snake's venom, a toenail from an ex-boyfriend or girlfriend and Evian water. A voodoo lady needs a sponsor. The cost of living isn't cheap you know.

Unfortunately, I'm not. I've just looked at the screenshots and the trailers, and I thought it looked like a great game. I'm going to get it off of Gamersgate when it comes out. It's the only place I know of that already has it for pre-order. http://www.gamersgate.com/DD-DECS/the-dark-eye-chains-of-satinav

I agree, and I think the same about Obsidian -- another unique and amazing game. But GK1 is probably easier to get now that GOG and DotEMU both have DRM-free versions, updated to run on newer computers, available to download.

About a dozen games with 5 or more votes so far, and all the recent Sherlocks seem to be doing well.
Isabelle is clearly biding its time.

When exactly does a game makes it to the hall of fame? What threshold needs to be achieved?

Also, I understand the hall of fame is a reflection of the games that received the most votes over the years, but for the other games, how difficult would it be, if at all possible, to not only bring us this year's most preferred ones, but also an overall view compilation of all previous years as well?

The basis for the Hall of fame is here
We decided to add Lost Crown this year as even though it doesn't have the longevity of some games, it has been top of the List the last two years and has only ever had Hall of Fame games finish in front of it. We debated waiting another year, but agreed it was a worthy entrant despite its "newness".
Not sure what you mean by a compilation, but as the counter and compiler with Chief my initial reaction is scared

I just fainted and I don't even do it. grin Maybe a look at the Annual Games Recommendations in the Archives could sub for a (shudder) compilation.

It's great to see Yoomurjak's Ring on so many lists. I think it's a classic, maybe one day a hall of fame entrant.

I really enjoyed playing Yoomurjak's Ring. Will there be a sequel? On the Private Moon Studios website it says it's "the first in the line of Jonathan Hunt Adventures."

There are already two sequels of the Jonathan Hunt Adventures, but in printed books:) They were published in Hungarian. Yoomurjak's Ring is the first one (the novel was based on the game) and the second is titled The Devil's Stone (none of them have been tranlsated yet, maybe some time...) And the second game is planned, based on this novel, so let's hope everything goes well!

Thanks Mad for the recommendation for Dragonsphere. I had never heard of this game so checked it out. It looked pretty good and I ordered it and was surprised to find it was a FREE game. Wow! That's why these Games Lists are so good! They let you know about the best in games.

Just logged on and clearly better get back to counting.
I give fair warning though that if Esther thinks she is ending up in front of everyones favourite girly named game, I may have to do something dastardly!

Thank you.

Also- I ask/propose that out of all the casual games- doesn't Escape from Ravenhearst approach adventure status?

I will return to list making now, Karen

gamern, the casuals gave their own list in January. The MCF series is certainly a favorite amongst the casual crowd.

I might indeed Mad!
Fifty five games already mentioned that weren't on the list last year, some old some new.
Games with more than 10 votes are GK1, Lost Horizon and Still Life.
Games with more than five include Black Mirror 2 and 3, Hunt for the Puppeteer, Gray Matter, Dracula Origin, Monkey Isalnd 1, Secret FIles 1 and 2 and several of the Sherlocks.
Edna Julia Carol Agatha and Esther are on the list but Nancy (and Isabelle) still to feature.
7 15 and 11 are on, but 3 9 15 and 80 not yet mentioned.
All letters of the alphabet represented except for X.

Wow, Sureshot, you reminded me of 'Midnight nowhere.' There was some problem or so, I hadn't been able to move ahead in this game, when I had played it some years back. I guess I have to replay this after all these years. I think I had liked the atmosphere of this game; so much like Silent Hill series or a psychological movie I guess.

Hi Hugh - it's one of those games that somehow just grabbed my attention! I would replay it too if there weren't so many games in my queue. It did play free of hitches on my XP system.

I guess I have to get XP back somehow on some system. This game, like many other cool things, isn't working on windows 7.

I thought it was a funny and interesting game- I was hoping they'd continue making them, but it appears they're doing a film now. You can download the "Sektor 1 and Sektor 2" games at the link traveler posted.

Actually, I just checked the rules and it doesn't say you can't recommend the same game more than once - so guess what that means devilchili

I will post the results in the morning!

Hi all,
Another year, a new list, and a very first (and nothing to do with Isabelle)!
It doesn’t get much closer than the final result. I still haven’t played one of them so perhaps that would have made the difference.
The Sherlocks probably did the best as a group, and some older venerable games are making their way back up the list. Good games just keep on keeping on.
Anyway, lets get on with it.
As always, two lists follow, one numerical, one alphabetical. I have started the numerical list with the Hall of Fame games, and included the Hall of Fame games in the alphabetical list. They are marked **.
I have used full as well as alternate titles where I have known them, and in the numeric list, I have tried to use actual titles, the games on my shelf having the final say (including those that are numbered). It isn’t perfect, but what is.
I have taken some liberties with names in the alphabetical list to get series together where possible. It wasn’t always possible, so on a couple of occasions I have marked a game as a sequel.
As I did last year, I have numbered the series games to assist people with the order in which they were developed. They may not be sequels, just additional games in a series.
It can get confusing - there are a number of Dracula games, some in a series and some not. Ditto some others. Fan games complicate things a little further. Hopefully it is reasonably clear.
Thanks to Chief who verified the count, and if errors remain, they are all mine.

hmm, I detect one error if I'm not mistaken. As it was my very own recommendation I'm a little bit dissapointed Corrosion: Cold Winter Waiting didn't make it to the list. At least it should have gotten one voice, mine. Just Adventure gave it a raving review so I'm not completely alone.

Thanks Flotsam for all your work.

I did notice that you have listed Blackstone Chronicles twice in the first list. One with 6 votes and one with 4. Does that mean it has 10? Then in the second, alphabetical, list it has 5.

Thanks so much, flotsam and Chief, for all your hard work praise

Don't know how on earth you manage to squeeze it in !! [Certainly flotsam - with Isabelle so constantly in the background !! lol]

Anyway, it's always really interesting to study the results thanks

Thank you flotsam & Chief! It's great to see all the games I couldn't squeeze into my top 20 listed in the results anyway!

Apologies for the errors.
Its tricky counting as you go and then compiling a final numerical list. With all the cutting and pasting and moving things about, it hurts my (somewhat elderly) brain.
Plus I have to look twice to make sure people didn't really mean to vote for Isabelle wink
I will remedy the list asap.

No apologies necessary Flotsam. I can only imagine how tricky and time consuming trying to keep a list like this straight is. I don't think I could have the patience to do what you seem to do so well. It could be worse...like if all of the over 7800 registered members here at GameBoomers gave you their top twenty lists. woozy
