Haven't played enough games to have a top ten list, but of what I've played, I would unhesitatingly recommend:

1. Riven -- best of the first-person, "plop you in a strange place and make you figure out what the hell's going on" games. My favorite adventure game to date.

2. Amber: Journeys Beyond -- the only game I've ever played that actually scared me.

3. Last Express -- not a game I really love, but I think anyone interested in adventure games should try this one out. Played completely in real time, it is definitely a unique experience.

I would also recommend, with reservations:

1. Myst -- started me on the genre, so that should say something for it, I guess.

2. Grim Fandango -- the best written, best voice-acted, best thought-out game I ever played, but weakened by a really crummy interface. I consider this a "flawed classic".

3. 7th Guest -- basically a puzzle game in adventure fancy pants, but a good puzzle game.

4. Outcast -- an action adventure game that got me started on THAT genre.

Hey! Great work flotsam

I noticed the top 10 are mostly older games. Sad huh?

Okay, here goes:

1. Myst/Riven
2. Zork Grand Inquisitor
3. Morpheus
4. The Curse of Monkey Island
5. The Last Express
6. Timelapse
7. The Legend of Lotus Spring
8. Amerzone
9. Ring
10. Reah

I'm currently playing Atlantis II, and unless the game suddenly loses all its remarkable heart and depth, it will end up high on my list.

Re: mostly older games making the lists: to some extent this is natural, because we've had more time to play older games. And I think there can be a nostalgic haze surrounding a person's first few immersive interactive experiences. (For instance, I find that the music from Myst affects me in the same way Golden Oldie songs from my teenage years do -- I don't just remember the song, but I remember what I was looking at and what I was feeling at the time.)

It's also easier to recognize a classic when you've had time to think about the game/book/painting, and put it in perspective, perhaps even to play/read/look at it more than once. This may explain in part why we seem to be favoring older games, but I don't think it explains the whole.

Hi,
Thanks for the encouragement MacDee.
Sad though I am not so sure about. Becky is right in that more of us will have played them, and I assume we will have played them because we have heard good things about them. The circle continues.
I suspect that newer games (like TLJ perhaps) will get more recommendations as time goes by. I haven't played it yet so it can't make my list. That is why I think doing this periodically (every 6 months say) will be both informative and useful. If you do it 4 or 5 times and the older games still come up, then maybe it is sad - or maybe it just says something about what people want to play.
idarcy had a good suggestion re Mac ported games and can the Mac-ers amongst you indicate at the end of the day what games are playable by the Microsoft challenged .

In no order:

Amber
Timelapse
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
Myst
Riven
Gabriel Knight/Beast Within
Monkey Island 1 + 2
Shivers

We are playing Obsidian now (hey Janie!) and that will probably make the the list. I know that would only put me up to nine, but the eternal optimist that I am, I want to save a spot for the next really great game that comes along.

My favorites are not necessarily the games I would reccomend to someone else.

I try to tailor my reccomendations the taste of the person who asks.

The games I would most often tell someone about are:

Riven
Broken Sword / Circle of Blood: Shadow of the Templars

Amerzone
Timelapse
Journeyman Project 2
Zork Grand Inquisitor
Full Throttle

for kids:

King's Quest 7: The Princeless Bride
Nile: An Ancient Egyptian Quest

Wow! I used up my ten slots faster than I thought I would.

It's interesting to me how many of us put Amber on our lists. Of course I wasn't gaming when it first came out, but did it really make that much of a hit, or is it just one of those games that people came to slowly appreciate? I just finished it recently, and found it very enjoyable, yet I had never heard of it until someone offered it to me in a trade.

HI, Jenny!

I don't know the stats on how Amber sold when it was first released in 1996. But, I think is popularity has steadily grown since. It probably could be considered a "cult classic" by this time... There are still lots of reviews of Amber on the Web. One such is at http://pc.hotgames.com//games/amberj/review.htm Although, it sounds like the author of this particular review was an action gamer and entirely unfamiliar with adventure games....or already had a firm mindset...LOL

Hi all,
I've only played 6 games one of which (Crystal Key) I wouldn't recommend unless you're desperate. From the quick look I took, it doesn't rate high with many. Here is my list of 5.

Zork Nemesis
Riven
Myst
Amerzone
JP3

Looks like I gotta try Obsidian and Timelapse.

You know, it is hard to get just 10 games, guess I play too much. I can easily put a list of 20.

Here is my list:

Loom (Anyone remember this one?)
Day of the Tentacle
Myst
Callahan's Crosstime Saloon
Neverhood
Circle of Blood
Journeyman Project 2
Zork Grand Inquisitor
Full Throttle
Toonstruck

Here's mine (subject to future additions) in no particular order...

Curse of Monkey Island
Grim Fandango
Discworld II
Nightlong
Normality
Faust
Gabriel Knight II - The Beast Within
Sanitarium
Amerzone
Myst

There's still a lot I haven't played yet (just got Feeble Files and waiting for Longest Journey) but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend any of these to other people, although I admit Normality was a guilty pleasure.

4. Forgotten
5. Zork Grand Inquisitor
6. Zork Nemesis
7. Shivers

3. Timelapse
4. Black Dahlia
