For those of you who played and loved the Quest for Glory games from Sierra, the Coles's new game, Hero U: Rogue to Redemption, was released on GOG a few hours ago. This game has been in the works for many years, and it is great to see it released at last. You can check it out here.

Thanks, Marian I got my "backer's email" - with a download link - today. [I was asked a day or two ago as to whether I wanted Steam or GOG - although the link I was actually sent today takes me to a "backerkit" address.] So hoping it's for the DRM Free version !!

Yes, I think it's possible to get through the game with very little combat - which made me wonder if this game could be included as part of Adventure Game Discussions. I wasn't sure, though, so I started a Darkside thread. I hope your game is DRM-free, Mad. Looking forward to hearing what you think of the game! I'm quite excited about this release. I loved the Quest for Glory games. I have also met and talked to Lori Cole before, because she and her husband live in the same area that I do, so it's fun times.

" I hope your game is DRM-free, Mad. Looking forward to hearing what you think of the game!" I found PDF manuals and stuff, Marian, but no "GOG" game key. Apparently that hasn't been sent to me .... yet

Thanks Marian! Sounds like an action-adventure game with a puzzle solving story mode, fits in with the Darkside stuff. Now, I just wish that game makers would understand that linear skill leveling, turn based combat and a fantasy theme does not an RPG make. *sigh* I'll jump off my soap box now...head first

Hopefully soon. Got my GOG code today, Marian, and have download the game plus manuals etc. However, I won't be playing it just yet as it appears a patch is expected to be released in a few weeks. So I will wait for the patch

I just found this on their Kickstarter update: There are some errors in the game books, a few dialogues and game events that could use tweaking, and at least one known "game-locking" bug.
(If you see a plaque labeled "Pyoter," it's best not to click on it. There was a bad line of code that freezes the game.) We will also keep a close eye on player reports and feedback over the next few months. I think what they mean by "game-locking" is that the game freezes up. If so, that's not fun, but it's nowhere near as bad as "game-stopping."

Oh .... I translated "game locking" as "stopping play". Is that not the case, then ?? But being able to complete the game "without using combat" might attract more buyers

Game locking means that the screen locks up/freezes, but I can see why you interpreted it the way that you did. Most designers don't bother to mention such problems, at least not that I recall. Oh, I'm grateful to them that the problem was mentioned, Marian, but I won't be playing the game until the patch is available

I remember my outrage when I came across actual combat in one of the old Quest For Glory games! What??? Fighting??? But ultimately it was those very minor encounters that allowed me to feel safe buying my first RPG, which was Baldur's Gate.
It's nice to see these old game styles being recreated.
I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

Great game indeed - already finished my first playthrough. But why 'The Darkside'? It is not an action-adventure game: you can even complete it without any combat. And the battles are turn-based anyway, like in 'Quest for Glory', so I would rather call it a pure adventure game

Generally, a game that contains combat in any form, even if it is optional, is usually directed here to the Darkside forum - That includes games with turn-based battle. Many classic RPG's are defined by that style of play. There are also "Darkside" style games that contain a Story Mode, allowing an individual to take part in the game, but avoid combat. Personally, I would simply term games that fall out of the usual classifications as hybrids. In recent years there have been departures from what would be considered "pure" game genres and the foundational game definitions (yes, they did exist) are becoming less adhered to. Adventure gamers are more than welcome to discuss those hybrid games here, we don't bite. Well, maybe just a little.
