Hi Maggie, I have the 4 CD game and I had to set the compatibility to Windows NT 4.0 (service pack 5). Maybe you could try setting it there and see if it works. Its playing great on Windows 7 64 bit. Kay

Karsten I have never heard of GOG, unless it is something I knew and I do not remember. I hate to fool around much with my computer as I am not good at it. Will it play normal or will I still have to fool with it and if so what area to I go to to change it, I am good with games, a real dummy when it comes to my computer. Thanks to both of you Margo ???

Maggie,
GOG - Good Old Games - is a site where you can download games and it's very easy to use. You just set up an account (takes no time), then choose a game you want and pay for it (quick) and it goes on your personal shelf on the site. You can redownload as many times as you want and even burn the game to disk since GOG games are DRM-free. And they're pretty inexpensive, too.
You don't have to download and use their download manager but it speeds things up. You just click the icon on your desktop to open it, then go to the site and choose to use it when you download a game.
Honestly, GOG makes things as easy for gamers as they can.
Gil.

Traveler Thanks so much, I assume this is on the internet or is it on Gameboomers? I will look at both and it sound like a great place to buy a game. Thanks again. Maggie

It's on the Internet, Maggie. http://www.gog.com/en/frontpage/If you want to see what they've got in adventure games, click on Catalog up at the top, then on Adventure right above the row of photos of games. Have fun! Oh, if you like The 7th Guest (no clue but it looks interesting), it's on sale today. Gil.

I was able to get The Longest Journey loaded from there, and it opened up, then it flickered several times and went to a black screen. I think this has to do with my Vista. I think I have to change the setting in my Vista somewhere and I do not know where. If I can get the instructions I can print them out and then play the game, I always enjoyed it, I still have my xp home which I keep updated but I hate to switch back and forth between computers. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks and thanks for GOG, it is a great site. Maggie I was able to find the compatibility,it will not work even on xp, it still does the same thing, it opens up fine and then flickers and turns black and I have to close down my computer. ????

Maggie, I'm not saying this is it (not being very computer literate myself) but I had the problem of Dracula Origin opening for me but when I tried to start a new game the monitor went black and I had to get out using Task Manager. My problem turned out to be not having the latest PhysX driver for my computer. Once I downloaded that and let it install, no more problems. I guess you have Nvidia drivers. If you do, you could go here and see if you need a new one. PhysX The number on this one is 9.11.1111. You can check in your Add/Remove programs (Look down the Nvidia list) and see if yours is an earlier number. I hope that does you some good! Btw, I just checked the GOG forums. Someone had your exact problem. One suggestion was to roll back the drivers. But someone else said that when he updated his drivers the game worked fine. Gil.

You should see a couple of graphics opptions in the Launcher - Have you tried lowering them? Here's a quip from the manual - - Colour Depth. The default option is 16-bit colour depth (65,000 colours). However, if you have a Pentium® II or equivalent, and a fast video card with 16MB RAM or more that supports 32-bit rendering, you may choose to run the game in 32-bit colour depth (16 million colours). This will dramatically improve the quality of the in-game graphics. However, performance may be affected, and if the game seems to be running slowly, try changing this back to 16-bit colour depth.
- High Quality April Model. This box is checked by default. If you have a slow computer or video card, or the game seems to be running slowly, try deselecting this option. The April character will look less detailed, but the game may run faster.
The Advanced options are only applicable if you're experiencing problems with the game. Please refer to the troubleshooting section of this manual or the Read Me file for more information.

TLJ was invented many years before PhysX, so I doubt changing PhysX would help. The current website for the Longest Journey is useless. But the old version had troubleshooting tips and you may be able to see them at the ***web archive***. One of ***these troubleshooting tips*** might help: I've installed the game, and tried to run it, but I see absolutely nothing (or at least nothing resembling a game). Can you help me?We'll certainly try. There may be several reasons why you're having graphics-related problems with TLJ. Try the following suggestions, and contact us if none of these help. - Disable 3D hardware acceleration in the start-up dialogue (uncheck the box called "Enable 3D acceleration").
- If you've tried to run the game in 32-bit colour depth, set it to 16-bit colour depth (in the start-up dialogue), or vice versa.
- Check if your monitor is set to a proper refresh-rate in 640 by 480 mode, using Window's Display Properties (right-click your desktop, and choose "Properties"), under "Settings".
- Download and install the latest version of DirectX (currently 8.0) from Microsoft.
- Reinstall the latest drivers for your video-card. Some cards require a reinstallation of drivers after updating DirectX.
- Try installing an older set of drivers for your video-card. New drivers are sometimes buggy or incompatible with certain software.

Jenny100 I do not remember where to find 32 bit? Oldest set of drivers, where to find and will it ruin what I have now? I just do not remember how to do anything anymore. I have not been on for about 7 months, and so I am stuck. Thanks Maggie

Hi Maggie As Traveler said, GOG is Good Old Games. I remember seeing The Longest Journey on there some while ago. Good Old Games is owned by the same company which made The Witcher games. And as Traveler also said, it is very easy to use. All games are drm-free and they are also setup by Good Old Games to work with windows xp, vista and windows 7. Normally, Good Old Games patch their games as well, so The Longest Journal from GOG should or would be patched. Hope you get your game working, though.

Hi Maggie If I were to make a guess, it could be a video card problem? Depending on how old your computer is, that is...and if it has a videocard on its own. The Ethernet card is a network card, as I remember it, it is unfortunately not a graphics card. Is your computer a desktop or a laptop? Did you remember, Maggie to install the game into another location that C:/Games Programs. In Vista older games like TLJ doesn't like to be placed in the program files folder since Vista sort of locks this folder (for security reasons). Have you tried uninstalling the game - and then installing it again in a folder called Games. [To create a new folder right click on blank page on your desktop then new then folder - then rename this folder - Games. To rename the folder rightclick on the folder and go down to where it says rename and type the folder name e.g. Games]. To check if your computer has a stand-alone videocard, please rightclick on the My Computer icon, then select properties, and then on the next screen, please clcik the Hardware option, then on the next screen click on the first (top) available option. You'll come into hardware management; please scroll down to where it says graphics or screen card. Now please click on the x (the mark) in the box next to it, and see what it says. Mine says this: ASUS AH 3650 Series. I really do hope you get TLJ to work.

Hi Karsten, I cannot get the Longest Journey working at all, when I turn it on, it opens up to the main page where the old women is with the young children, but then it still flickers and then goes black. I didn't realize you'd gotten as far as the old woman. There's a separate ***archive page*** for that: The game crashes at the very beginning, right after the bit with the old woman.
Try the following (restart the game after each change, and try playing, before making any further changes): In the Game Settings menu, uncheck the "High Quality Videos" checkbox. In the advanced start-up dialogue, disable hardware 3D acceleration. If you've just played another game prior to playing TLJ, reboot your PC before running TLJ - if the first game used the same video "codec" as TLJ (Bink), there may be a system conflict that can only be resolved by rebooting.

Yes maggie, take Draclvr's suggestion and definetly follow Jenny's advice first, and the 1st Link I gave you is not a good one for you since it is for TLJ2 and not TLJ1. Sorry about the confusion. As for your Q. re : how did I get it to work, I will re-install the game when I have a chance and find some savegames where you are, because to be honest I played that game about 3 years ago on my Win7 and previously my Vista Laptop and I haven't a clue as to how I got it going. Did I need the Patch? or Not? Good luck. Update: I have the game installed and I have tested several save games at each chapter and All is Good, I had to make a couple of minor tweaks as suggested by Jenny100 and InlandAZ, if you have problems seeing these suggested tweaks, here is a link with Pics that might help (don't worry about it being for Win7): http://saeedoo.wordpress.com/2010/08/21/getting-the-longest-journey-to-work-on-windows-7/On one last note, in my CD version I installed the NO CD fix since I hate playing with a CD in my machine, especially since it is a Laptop and gets very noisy at times.

Maggie I have Vista and the security software that comes with Vista must be closed or it will interfere with launching or playing most adventure games. Close the security icons (bottom right) on your desktop before opening the game and see if that helps. Good Luck!
