Hi Gran After you have clicked on the Statue, click the Crypt Twice then go to the left. That should get you to the next bit. The secret is to click Twice. "Walter" 
If at first you dont suceed, deny you even tried.

Hi, Gran, I played The Dig last summer. First of all, do you have the golden rod with the shapes? When the shutter opened, you should have used the rod to fix the plate. If I remember correctly, you may have to remove the rod to go down.

Gran, I thought maybe not having the gold rod in your inventory would keep you from descending because you'll need it shortly. Once the statue disintegrates, I just remember clicking on the triangular platform and descending. I'm sorry I can't help you more than that.
