I remember having to continually adjust the positions of both Toby and Sherlock. - Change to Sherlock. - Move him out of the way. - Change to Toby and amble along. Love his gait.

I didn't think that it was possible to manually switch back to Sherlock while playing as Toby? If Holmes is blocking your way, you'll just have to move as far away as possible from him, so that he'll move towards you. Then you -- Toby -- should have the space to leave the control room.

Page 5 of the manual has a diagram of the Xbox controller, showing the "X" button (right hand side) to "switch view mode". Thanks, Carrie! Is that just to switch from first to third person, though? (That's still useful info, for anyone who doesn't like playing in one or the other.)
