A border collie/heeler mix had been running around town for a week now. Extremely shy and would run when anyone came near. I started setting out food and water across the street, in a field, from me and finally this morning he let me pet him and get a look at his collar; but once I let go he ran off a ways. Had a pen with me and wrote the phone number that was on a tag, on my shoe. I was to worried that even a piece of paper would spook him. The owner was contacted that lived 45 mile away. She just picked the dog up a short while ago and he was so excited to see her. I think I can actually sleep tonight and not worry about him being out in the cold, though the days have been warm. This is just to encourage others if you see a lost dog, being patient and gentle could ultimately aid in their being caught. I do have to admit, I was thinking, "where's the dog whisperer" when I need him.

What a good feeling! I have been on the receiving end of such a phone call and I will be eternally grateful for the individual who called us.
Gardens put to bed. Time for more reading and gaming.

Nice Trippy! It reminds me of a similar experience hubby and I had over 30 years ago! It was after dark in the Fall during hunting season. I heard a scratching on the kitchen door. Turned on the porch light and there sat the cutest beagle dog scratching at the door. We figured she was lost so we let her in, checked her collar, called the number and left a message on the machine. She seemed to be hungry so we gave her some cereal and some water. She took to hubby so well that she actually jumped in his lap on the couch and fell asleep with her head up under his chin! Poor thing was lost and exhausted! We got a call back and the owner said he was trying to teach her how to hunt earlier in the day in the state forest across from our street and she ran after a rabbit and got lost. He was from another town and came to pick up the dog with his 9 year old daughter. It was really her dog. They were so grateful. But when they came in to take her she didn't want to leave at first! She was safe, warm, and fed. But she did go home and according to the owner never to hunt again!

Happy endings! AND wonderful people who go out of their way to help the critters find their way home. Wish more humans would spend some time helping the helpless and lost. Love that you find the ownoer 3dobermans! Question though: How did that poor doggie get 45 miles from home?????
WARNING! This person is extremely blonde...please type SLOWLY.

Sorry I didn't respond sooner. The young woman was a college student and was apparently visiting family/friends. The dog was in the back of her truck and jumped out somewhere along the hiway as she was headed home. Somehow he found his way here to this small town. Like others I thought he was with hunters that were coming into town, but was asking around and no one claimed him. When his owner picked him up she said she learned a lesson and said Jake and her other dog would never ride in the back of the pick-up again.
I hope this alerts others of the dangers of leaving a dog/s in the back of a truck. I really don't even agree with having them tied in the back.
Have you hugged your dog today? Please give them a hug for me too.
