Hi all, I just noticed on Steam that Team Microids is responding to all the complaints about the poor Syberia 3 interface and navigation. A Microids developer, one Alain, reports that they are working on a full mouse control version: We are working on a new control mode, enabling full mouse... It should come beginning of June and hope you will appreciate it.
Also on more general complaints: Dev team are working to fix issues and bring better game experience. I will report your game design comments too. I hope this prospect can perk some of us up a bit, though the proof of the pudding is still .... Best, Rich

I was looking for more detailed future update information on various Microïds sites and accounts in English and French, but not much is forthcoming. On their Facebook account, Microïds announce that they are working on "various control modes for keyboard and mouse", "various control modes for controller" and "you will be able to change the keyboard bindings". Also, you will be able to change the graphics settings. Microïds say they've already patched annoying bugs like crashes, jerky performance and visuals, voice (dubbing) and subtitle synchronisation, lighting and atmosphere issues, sound drop-outs, translation errors, small font sizes, and slow game launches and freezes. They're also improving facial animations and movements for the characters. For support, you can turn to https://support.syberia3.com/en/support/home I think all of this goes to show the sorry state the original release was in! Best, Rich

In the Syberia review section of Steam, developer Alain of Microïds now announces that the full mouse mode will be released "in a fortnight". He is now actively engaging with players to counter all the criticism (55% negative comments by verified Steam purchasers). You can see why: Thank you for your long review that cheers us up and [is a] change from the late bashing we have been facing since the release. He goes on to address the choice of 3D instead of the old point-and-click 2D: About adding 3D, it is a long discussion we could have but I also remember when Broken Sword and some other went 3D, same controversy. A logical choice was made and I guess if we have stayed on 2D, half of the comments will reproach us to be "stuck in the 2000's"... He also explains why it took 10 years to release a sequel: And last about the 10 years, just to clarify one important point. Anuman bought Microids in 2009. Syberia 3 was a project at this time ported [I assume French 'porter' = 'carry out'] by MC2, the previous company owning Microids and Syberia IP [intellectual property?]. Project was not approved either by Benoit Sokal at this time. So when we took over Microids IP, we had to work first on making games work on actual [i.e. current] computers (they were only XP compatible), then to make new versions for Mac, mobiles and consoles (PS3 and X360) and finally start a new production and convince Benoit to follow us on this new adventure. Benoit is a very busy man and we had to find a time table to make this project possible and then starting development. Best, Rich

Well, there will have to be a much improved version released (and not a Steam one) before I will consider buying it. So far I've mainly seen just complaint after complaint

About adding 3D, it is a long discussion we could have but I also remember when Broken Sword and some other went 3D, same controversy. And look what happened to Revolution after Broken Sword 3 failed to meet expectations. They had to "downsize" to stay afloat, and nearly all their employees lost their jobs. Broken Sword 5 was point-and-click for good reason. It's what fans of the series wanted. Do you know of a single point-and-click adventure game series that succeeded after changing to keyboard/gamepad controls? A logical choice was made and I guess if we have stayed on 2D, half of the comments will reproach us to be "stuck in the 2000's"... It's not "logical" to be more concerned about imaginary potential "stuck in the 2000's" comments than about ease of use. What is logical is to use the right tool for the job. It's also nonsense to claim point-and-click controls are "stuck in the 2000's" when they've been a viable control scheme ever since mice started being used with computers in the 1980's. There are current RPG's and platformers using point-and-click controls, and there are plenty of complaints when an action game uses keyboard or gamepad for aiming when mouse is much more precise. The control scheme should depend on the type of game and what the gamer is expected to do in the game, not on some marketing idiot's idea of what a modern interface is supposed to be. By the way, gamepads were used at least as long ago as the 1980's and keyboards even before that. So if you want to say point-and-click controls are "stuck in the 1980's" or "stuck in the 2000's" you have to say the same thing about gamepads and keyboards. There is nothing "stuck" about using what works and there is everything wrong with using something that doesn't work as well (or doesn't work at all) just to be different.
