For some reason, the empty sample container, from the antique store, will not take a sample from the thermostat. Walkthrough says you must hear the comment when clicking on it? There has been none. Can't figure out what I missed.

I am not sure what you might have missed, but here's a couple of thoughts:

Have you zoomed in on the fire alarm? I think it's high up on one of the walls near the entrance to the room where you found the ice cube. You should notice that it was turned off.

Also, there's a room in the police station with a chromatography machine that Nancy has to see before you can get the sample.

I wondered if I changed people - turned the case over to George? But then I would have to play the number game again I suppose.
Ned has a container now and he is the one that has the case at the moment.
Still going over previous steps to figure it out.

Let us know how it goes and I will post if I can come up with any other ideas.

Ned will have to be the one to collect the sample then. I don't think the game lets you transfer the empty container from person to person.

Also, has Nancy said something to Ned about getting the sample yet? I think that and looking closeup on the alarm/point of origin are the triggers

No, you can not transfer anything person to person.
I believe I know where a mistake was made.
Nancy was talking to Ned. I saw that I could have clicked on the line where she tells him she need the sample from the fire/thermostat. I did NOT click on that. (I thought I would wait and see what else there would be first.) Because Nancy did not ask Ned to get the sample - Ned can not get it. Once past the opportunity, apparently there is not another chance...have not been able to bring that line back into conversation.

NED does have the sample container after the number game.

So I tried another course. George took the case. She talked to Nancy and this time I clicked on the line that says Nancy needs the sample.
Went back to the antique store. Played the numbers game several - many times. Supposedly, even if you don't play fast enough, you will still get the container. but can not get another. Maybe there is only one.

So, Ned has the container and George is the person who has been asked to get the sample.
I am so hoping I will not have to start the game over. Any ideas?

There is only one container.
Regardless of who initially takes the container, and who Nancy tells she needs the sample, the person with the container can now take it.
IIRC, there is only one case book that all the notes are recorded in.
Bess, George and Ned all share this so Nancy does not have to tell a specific person, a specific clue.
They will know it.

Trying again today.
I do have a few saved locations so if I have to go back it won't be to the beginning!
There is one thing I'm not sure about though. When you open the bag with items in it, the container only shows up while Ned has the case. So while they share the case book, it does not look like they share the items to use in game play (container, keys etc.)

Ned has the case. He can't find the cup at Scoop to get a finger print. The storage room has been checked - files and all.
The game was played to get her out from behind the counter. Saw the snowflake trays. Looked all around and do not see a cup.
So far I have only gotten one fingerprint. From the News Van.
Can't get the one at the antique store either. Entire store has been checked.
Got the note in plastic bag from Deirdre at Scoop. However, can't the conversation to get rid of Deirdre so I can get her fingerprint off her glass. Gave it to Nancy - but she can't do anything with it.

Strange but I have not picked any locks. The file cabinet was open to view.
I seem to be at a stand still. Also each Character has called everyone.

The only cup I see mentioned in the walkthrough is the one that Deirdre is drinking out of - you get her fingerprints off it.

It would seem I have missed something because no matter how many times Nancy calls Ned or other way around the question of inviting Deirdre for a bite to eat, does not happen.
Will keep trying!

I hope you can figure it out. Maybe another player will have some suggestions, as well.

I think you can only do the fingerprinting when Nancy mentions collecting prints from everyone and whichever player is trying to get the prints has to have one of the fingerprint kits from Nancy's bedroom (which is why that cabinet has 3)

For Toni, you ask for ice cream (I don't think it matters if it's a shake/malt, float or bowl of ice cream)

For Alexei, get him to leave by asking for something, then print the thing he's been polishing

To get Deirdre to leave so her glass can be printed, Nancy has to tell ned to distract her, then as Ned ask her out, then she''ll leave to change and while she's gone, her glass can be printed (and her notebook should be searched too
