Imagine my horror when I opened my game this morning since I had about half an hour to play and found all my game saves GONE!! I went to the Steam forums and the developer posted a work around. It won't let me copy and paste the text, but hopefully this is the link to the Xing forums. http://steamcommunity.com/app/299400

That all sounds really BAD and I'm so sorry to hear it !! But I am a tad confused .... When was a patch released ?? And is it only for Steam versions ?? I downloaded the non-Steam version of Xing from Humble Bundle as soon as it became available and burned it to disk. But there wasn't a patch.

When was a patch released ?? And is it only for Steam versions ?? Yes it was a Steam patch, and from what they say, it appears this Steam patch introduced the save game bug. They say it's been fixed in an even newer patch. The DRM-free Humble version of the game had a notice that said the DRM-free version would never be patched. So you (Mad) shouldn't get the problem. Here are some quotes: There is a major issue found in the last patch where people's save files are being deleted. I've reverted the patch, but if you have played in the last 30 minutes, you save file may have been affected.
Let me know here if this has affected you and I'll work on getting you your progress back! So anyone with the Steam version whose save disappeared may want to contact Falco for help getting their save back. We apologize that this save bug slipped past our nets on the latest patch. It was an oversight and we have since reverted it. (So if you are reading this and haven't played, make sure you get the very latest update)
If you are having this problem and can describe to us exactly where you are in the game, we can recreate a save file for you in that location, so you can just load that instead of having to do everything over again >< Please email us at xingthegame@gmail.com with where you last were, including any runes you may have picked up, and we will email you a save that should be close to that! Quotes are from http://steamcommunity.com/app/299400/discussions/3/1519260397776663390/I downloaded the non-Steam version of Xing from Humble Bundle as soon as it became available and burned it to disk. You may want to back it up some other way, or at least check that your burn is OK. The XING_The_Land_Beyond.zip file was a huge file (over 4 GB in size), and my attempt to burn it failed because of the extremely large size of the file. When I tried to extract the game from the XING_The_Land_Beyond.zip file on the DVD, it extracted files, but said the zip was corrupt. It extracted a huge number of files into folders and subfolders so it was practically impossible to check what may have been missing or corrupt. I've now backed the game up on a USB drive. Anyway, your burning software might work better than mine, but you may want to check that the XING_The_Land_Beyond.zip file on your DVD doesn't produce an error while extracting.

Thank you, Jenny100. That's really helpful information At least for those affected (the Steam ones) a decent offer of help is on the cards .... And I'll certainly do a trial install myself. But I didn't encounter any difficulties during the download OR the disk burning as far as I know.

And yay, now I can copy and paste. This patch was submitted to Steam by the developer. Previous patches fixed glitches and some minor errors, but the last one Falco submitted broke the saved games. I'm deeply embarrassed by the trouble I've caused you who have lost your save files. The newest build (3635) contains the fixes from 3633 and a debug menu you can use to recreate your save file.
Ultimately it is your decision on whether to start a new game from scratch or with our tool, but for those who would like to get back into the game relatively close to where they left off here are the instructions:
First, create a new save file, and wait for the opening sequence to play out. Once you have control, open the menu with esc or "p". Once it opens, press "9". Close the menu with escape or "p". Finally, open the menu again. A new button titled "debug" should be available. In it, there is a button titled "Edit Save". Clicking on one of the "beat" buttons will update your save - for example if you want to recreate a save file that had beaten the rainforest level click on both the beach and rainfroest buttons. After that, restart the level with the button found in the debug menu. You'll find yourself back in Zeneth - you'll need to place the talisman back into the pool. After throwing one in the vortex may spawn another. Make sure you throw all of them in before talking to the guardian.
I apologize again for the trouble I've caused you by this mixup. Please reach out to us via info@xingthegame.com as we would like to make it up to you all personally. Unfortunately, it appears the developer did not "test" the latest patch before submitting it.

Good news! The initial patches released did fix some important bugs, but hopefully you won't run into any of them!

Just wanted to come back and say I tested my Humble Bundle release of the game and it installed, played and saved without any problems Sounds like your DVD writing software is better than mine. Anyway, it looks like your backup is OK.

I certainly hope I don't encounter any bugs, Draclvr And Jenny100 .... My Son in Law installed Nero StartSmart Essentials for burning to disk when he built this Win7 machine and it's been fine

My Son in Law installed Nero StartSmart Essentials for burning to disk when he built this Win7 machine and it's been fine It doesn't surprise me that Nero would be better than the free burning program I used (which doesn't usually have problems but which does have some quirks).

Good for you, Armand! It was quite a shocker this morning as I had intended to tackle the last pillar in the Nehele Rain chapter this morning. I was able to restore the game, but had to forgo playing the end of that chapter. Very disappointing... I know the developer is feeling just terrible about being too quick to "pull the trigger" as he put it on that update.

It is supposed to be completely fixed. The developer was issuing patches for bugs and a few other issues - that wasn't the issue. In the words of the developer, he pushed out the last patch without making sure it was not going to cause even more issues that it was supposed to fix. The third patch is supposed to have fixed everything.
So far, I'm not having any more problems.

I noticed that the developer says the Steam version has no DRM and that any updates/patches should be downloaded from there - even if you didn't buy your game from them. Which I find rather weird. So I don't know what I will do if I encounter any problems as I closed my Steam Account yonks ago

There is an official one posted by the developer in the Steam forums, but I haven't looked at it, so I don't know if it is text/pictures or a video.

Let's hope you don't run into any of the bugs then! " Hoping" not to run into any bugs doesn't seem like a fair situation to me, Draclvr Like any other purchaser who bought this game outside of Steam, I paid hard earned money for it. So any patches released that are " required" in order to play it should surely also be made available to me outside of Steam [I reckon I need a contact address for the developer !!]
