I have been playing Elder Scrolls Online (RPG Multi-Player) for a number of years and am beginning to wonder if there is another life out there. I would really like to get back to Adventure Mode after countless battles and being responsible for thousands of deaths of a multitude of species. However, I can't imagine not having the superb graphics and the ability to roam anywhere in the game. ESO is fantastic in that regard.

I noticed that a number of folks at GameBoomers are still playing the older games from ten to twenty years ago. I am running Windows 10 and I am surprised that these older games function in Windows 10. Are people running them on older computers that they use just for gaming?

Are there any newer adventure games with great graphics that permit one to roam freely around the game? Or is everything still the "click on edge of screen to go to new area" type of game?

I have played almost all the old games, probably over the past 20 plus years, and don't really want to revisit those. What is new? Any suggestions on how to get a new life would be greatly appreciated. OldFeeble

May I suggest The Vanishing of Ethan Carter if you want to roam in an adventure. It's great eye candy and a challenge!

There are some excellent newer adventure games with great graphics and the ability to explore freely. One that comes to mind is The Vanishing of Ethan Carter. It is a visual treat with an excellent story and puzzles.

it seems you are not afraid of some battle in games. If you are interested in wandering the streets of almost photorealistic Victorian London in area covering 7 boroughs, I recommend you "Assassin's Creed: Syndicate" where you are free to experience wonderfully detailed London covering huge area with working factories, foundries, forges, transport etc. and visit many well known landmarks also inside. After completing the game I used hours revisiting all those beautiful places with no rush.

Thanks BET and Drac for the suggestions! Both of those games look really interesting and seem to be available on Steam. Do many folks download their games from Steam nowadays? I really like having a physical CD but that is getting to be outdated I guess.

Thanks also TJL for the suggestion but I need a break from killing everything that looks at me cross-eyed. I played and liked the early Assassin's Creed games so this will be my fallback game.

so no violence of any kind for you at all this time!

One game I played few years back popped into my mind, it's Ether One. In it you can freely explore a coastal mining village, search for notes and hints and solve puzzles that often give you access to new areas. Finding and solving everything won't be easy and takes easily dozens of hours. I raise my hat for anyone who does it without any use of walkthrough. And in this game you won't have to harm or kill anyone, because there ain't no one but you. Check it although those trailers I've seen won't do much right for this game. I liked it a lot anyway between more action filled games.

And then there is also Kholat in which you fall deep into a real life mystery of soviet hikers who died in strange circumstances in Dyatlov Pass on Ural Mountains. There is something threatening and dangerous there and your only way to survive is to avoid it. The threat is not constant but keeps you on your toes in a 'good way'. Finding your way around with pieces of maps and 'real' compass is a real challenge. This game is currently on sale on GOG, as is The Vanishing of Ethan Carter that's also been recommended. Excellent games both.

The later Myst games allow a lot of freedom of movement.

And I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Obduction (also from Cyan), which is free roaming.

I don't think there are any adventure games that have quite the size of world to explore that Skyrim or ESO do, but I would reinforce the votes for the Vanishing of Ethan Carter, though it is a murder mystery at it's core, so *somebody* is doing some killing, just not you.

I'm also an Assassin's Creed fan (Ezio's story over his three games, AC 2, Brotherhood and Revelation is a really good arc), I'm less a fan of the later characters, but I'm currently playing Rogue, with Syndicate ready for next. Holding off on Origins, which looks awesome, but is too expensive just now, and I'm waiting to see if Ubisoft will do something sensible about the performance issues some people are having, seemingly because of the doubled-up, over-paranoid DRM systems they've used. (I don't know why they bother, it'll be cracked soon enough anyway, even if it hasn't already been, and the only people it really inconvenience are the legit paying customers who get the problems, but that's a debate for another day, and possibly another forum)

If you are looking for a game with free roaming exploration, Miasmata is one of the best. There is a creature that can threaten you occasionally, but it can be avoided.
