Bummer, wonder why they would go the VR only route when the entire core fan base is PC. Also wonder why it wouldn't be a combo version like Obduction was to have the best of both worlds.

I haven't read the press release, but does it really say that the game will be VR only? If not, I highly doubt that that will be the case. As GreyFuss points out, Cyan already have a large fan base, and I'm pretty sure that most of these players don't use (or aren't even interested in) a VR game.
That a game is presented as a VR game doesn't necessarily mean that it doesn't come in a PC version too. Carbon Studio's Alice VR, for example, plays on PC monitors as well, and it even has "VR" in the title. It couldn't be a budget issue either. Making a VR game might be expensive, but building a version for PC monitors won't be a big stretch for Cyan.
Besides, judging from the demo video, the game looks terrific on a PC screen.
That being said, if the game is released for PC monitors, it's highly likely that the minimum requirements will be quite demanding.

Just an FYI, Rand Miller has confirmed in the Kickstarter video ( Firmament Kickstarter ) that while Firmament is being built from the ground up as a VR game, there will be a "Flat Screen" experience available for those without VR. I think the press misinterpreted the initial information releases. Very excited about this one.  TM
