Here's a review from Quandary. It seems to be point and click -- the review doesn't state that directly, but I'm pretty sure that keyboard control would have been flagged and discussed. This is one of those love-it-or-hate-it games. You might want to give it a miss unless you especially enjoy quirky, unconventional games. I don't see the game on Inferno's XP compatibility list. Perhaps someone who's tried it on XP will post with appropriate experiences in attempting to do so.

I was only able to get it to run on 98SE. I believe it installed on ME and XP but would not run if I remember properly. I can't say whether or not it is any good cause I only played it for about an hour and never got back to it. I thought what I saw was interesting. Need to load it up and check it out again.

I am one of the few people who loved this game - especially the organ puzzle. I think most people love it or really, really hate it - I mean really hate it. I'll admit it can be pretty frustrating but when I finally got that @&#^$%%&*Q organ puzzle to work I felt I had made some major accomplishment. I played it on WIN98, so dan't help on specs. It's is point and click. If you can get it cheap - then go for it.

Hi folks, One technical problem with 9: The Last Resort that hasn't been discussed is that it doesn't recognise above 32MB RAM. So if you have more memory than this the installation process tells you you don't have enough memory In the past you could send your original disk in to Infogrames/Atari and get a replacement but they don't seem to be offering that service any more. Here is the FAQ from the publishers website: you can email support by clicking the button at the bottom of this web page. Cheers Gordon

For all systems except XP Pro. No joy there. Ever.

Zip files are files that have been reduced in size (zipped) so they are easier to move on the net. There are a number of free and trial zip file openers available, including WinZip and Stuffit. Or, in the immortal words of Fred Astaire, you could "just call the whole thing off."

"just call the whole thing off..." Ahhhh, that's right! But they didn't, did they? Call the whole thing off. I see a place on crazy lady's shelf reserved for 9, just because....it's been beckoning and won't be denied.

Jenny said: You LOVED the organ puzzle???? Oh my, I think that makes you a one-in-a-hundred gamer... Sorry I'm so late responding - I was out of town. Well, if you knew me in real life you probably would think I was pretty strange. But, as I said - I got such a feeling of accomplishment when I finally got it that I must have forgotten the frustration. In fact, I just bought a copy of it from ebay so that I could play it again. I guess I'm a glutton for punishment. tuesday next

Other games that use the 32-bit version of QT 2.12 will usually at least start up in WineX, even if they don't run all that well. But "9" had this stupid copy "protection" problem and would not run at all. I don't think 9 has any copy protection. It does, however, have some problems with the plumbing in XP Pro. Lots of people contributed to an experiment to see what flavors of Windows 9 would install and run on and the results suggest it would run on everything from Win95 through XP Home. Just not XP Pro. I've never tried to play a Windows game via an emulator so I wouldn't be qualified to comment on how a Windows game might behave on Linux.

I was unable to make a completely viable CD image using an old imaging program (Disk Dump) that has worked with every other non-copy-"protected" game I've tried it with (as well as a few that were copy "protected." Disk Dump always gave an error toward the end. I could mount the image and play from it in Win 98, but after a certain point fairly late in the game, things didn't trigger as they should have and I couldn't continue. Odd that copy protection would kick in at the end of the game. I've made an image of 9 with CD Copier and it played with no problem. Then again, 9 is infamously unstable. What appears to be copy protection may, in fact, just be bad coding.

And what was the error message? Might it have been triggered by bad coding? Even the Mac version of 9 had a tendency to blow up.
Most copy protection protection schemes I've seen prevent a copy from being made rather than prevent a player from finishing the game. Or, if a copy is made, it won't work. But to let it work until the game is almost complete...new to me.
My role in the aforementioned experiment was to get the game to install on as many different flavors of Windows as possible. By the time all the testing was done, I was on to something else.
If, however, you have a saved game from near your crash, I'd be willing to do some more experimenting.

But I've never had it on any other game - unless it was a copy "protected" game. Of course nowadays Disk Dump usually won't even start with "protected" games. It's old, but usually works well with old games that have teeny tiny little installs and are accessing the CD all the time as you play. Most copy protection protection schemes I've seen prevent a copy from being made rather than prevent a player from finishing the game. Or, if a copy is made, it won't work. I think TAGES can cause errors like that (sneaky). But TAGES is a newer copy "protection" - not something "9" would be using.
If, however, you have a saved game from near your crash, I'd be willing to do some more experimenting.
It wasn't an obvious crash though - just a failure of things to respond. I'd played "9" before - the old version that would only work on my 486. Then I sent in that disk and got the replacement disk. When I finally got around to replaying it, I decided to use Disk Dump and play it with Daemon-Tools so it wouldn't be slowed down by accessing the CD all the time. This is the one I had the problem with. I even bought an old Game Guide for "9" in case there was something I had forgotten to do which wasn't in the Walkthrough, but there was nothing. What I did should have worked.

Without a saved game and some fiddling with a CD in the drive and then a CD image, there's no way to tell what might be going on. I doubt copy protection is to blame, but that's just a doubt, not a fact. Sounds more like a simple freeze and that might be due to really sloppy coding; the sort where the game eats up all the system memory and then just grinds to a halt. All that said, I'm just glad to be away from Salty...

Jema, if you are still reading this thread, that game you are asking about is probably Realms of the Haunting. That business of having to fix the lights gave it away. There were RUNES (symbols) that glowed on the doors?
You drove up in a taxi? Got a gun, and shot something outside the window? You could also use a sword to wave madly around and kill the green monsters?
The typewriter started writing you a message all by itself??
Had to gather up all sorts of Egyptian relics for an alter?
You met your ghost in one of the rooms?
Mind you, this is all just part of the FIRST chapter, this is one of the longest Adventure Game there is.

Aw crazy lady, I'm sorry, there are several conversations going, aren't there! I'll just blame it on granny! Yeah, that will work! Granny was answering a question that Jenna had way back on the first page of this thread. Jenna thought the name of the game was Legacy or something like that, which she had a problem with, and granny believed she was talking about Realms of the Haunting.

Jenna, that wasn't your fault in the least, it was bad granny and I! Gotcha' - you're talking about "The Legacy: Realm of Terror" also known as "Haunted House". And it was me that threw away 9 and also Fork in the Tale. Back then I didn't know about stuff like trading post or even Gameboomers, so it was either keep it or throw it as hard as possible into the trash! crazy lady - see what fun you started!

Yeah, that's right, Nickie, blame it all on a frail, unassuming, pitiful old lady *cough*cough* that's too shy and old fashioned to stand up for herself.
