With the thanx of DOSBox and Steve Metzler, over at Quandary, I have been playing the old Tex Murphy games again. I finished UAKM and am now in the middle of Pandora Directive.

I also have another oldie in the wings that I checked out and plays on DOSBox and that is Shadow of the Comet. I played it years ago with win 3.1 and 3.5 floppies but I couldn't get this game to play on any computer at all with the CD version and had given up and now, with DOSBox, it runs. It has rather outdated graphics (reminiscent of the older Kings Quest games) but is well worth playing if you can get it. DOSBox is a savior.

Don't forget about ScummVM . Both DOSBox and ScummVM are life-savers. I would never be able to relive the classics without them. I'm playing The Secret of Monkey Island right now for the first time with the help of ScummVM.

What a lot of people probably don't realise is that DOSBox has (quietly) superseded ScummVM. Every game that I know of that ScummVM will run, so will DOSBox. Much easier only having to know your way around one utility rather than 2 or 3

I even managed to get Ultima VII running in DOSBox quite easily by setting ems=true. Before DOSBox, you needed to use yet another utility called Exult to get Ultima VII running.

If you experience any problems with DOSBox, can you completely and safely uninstall it?

There is an uninstall.exe in the DOSBox folder, but I have never used it. AFAIK, DOSBox doesn't put any entries in the Windows Registry, so you can just delete the folder and it's gone. Like most UNIX-themed software, all its configuration is in a flat file, which in this instance is dosbox.conf.

I have to second that, Oldman. I'm discovering all these old games for the first time thanks to dosbox and Steve. I can't count how many I've played lately.

I don't have ScummVm. I tried downloading it quite a while ago before dosbox and don't remember if it was too big a file for my connection, or if I didn't understand the directions, but never did use it.

I had forgotten how awesome this game really was and am so grateful that I was able to replay it. If it were done today with the graphics that are available it would be breathtaking.

I mourn over the loss of the series and Microsoft should be severely damaged for shelving this tremendous series.

Why do large corporations gobble up smaller ones just to destroy their art? I will never understand it. Sierra comes to mind as well.

Anyway off my soapbox and back to the kudos for this really great game. I thoroughly enjoyed it the second time around and if you haven't played it, you should.
