I really do feel bad to come here asking for help when I haven't been active in ever but someone convinced me to, so here goes. Some of my free games form Game Giveaway for the Day work great but some are marked with a shield, it looks like. It is blue and yellow and these games try to load up but blink once or twice and that is it. I think it may be something to do with security and I tried to run as Admin but the same problem. Does anyone know what I am talking about and how to allow them to run? I do have a screenshot of the shields... I don't know if that is allowed or not. I do thank you for your time and I honestly miss you but am trying to live in the real world more but that doesn't count Adventure Games!!

I'm looking to see what I can find, but in the meantime, this is a link to their contact form. I'm having a hard time finding anything... https://www.giveawayoftheday.com/about/contact/Just grab a screenshot and sent it to me at the email in my profile.

As far as I know, the blue and yellow shield means you have to run as Administrator, as described here https://superuser.com/questions/1103871/how-to-disable-shield-icon-in-windows-10But you say you tried to "Run as Administrator" and it didn't work. How old are these games? If they were made for XP, have you tried using Compatibility Mode to run them? Have you tried checking the checkbox for "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings"?

It is a bit of a nightmare. I don't want to lose my system security. This is the safest one I found, I think, but have no idea what it means or how to do this. Terrified of messing it up forever!! I will check back in awhile. Again, thank you everybody!!
Modify imageres.dll. Just clear UAC icon, make it transparent (and Shortcut overlay at one shot). A side effect is that admin icon is missing in context menu, where "Run as Administrator" command is. Personally I can live with it!

Oh no!! I haven't the brains to figure this out. Do I type in Modify imageres.dll at the search bar?

I have absolutely no idea! Jenny already asked this question already, but I didn't see that you answered. How old are these games? Are they for XP? Have you tried compatibility mode?

Personally I can live with it! I thought your problem was that the games wouldn't start. All modifying imageres.dll does (or is supposed to do) is remove the shield from the desktop icon. Modifying imageres.dll has nothing to do with allowing the game to start without Administrator privileges.

Well, I guess I am back to square one as this person seemed to think it solved the problem of Win security not allowing the game to play due to security. I am sorry. The games were installed within the past six months and probably more recent than not. I would think they are meant for 10 but I am not certain if games offered are that at all!! I guess it isn't that important and I am sorry to cause such a stir. Thanks to all of you for your input. I do appreciate it.

I stopped downloading the Game Giveaway of the Day games several years ago after I got burned a couple of times with the download wrappers containing spam and other nasty stuff. The Giveaway page should state whether the games are compatible with Windows 10 or not. I know they used to give the compatible operating systems anyway. Have you ever used the Free Games Galore here at GB? Chief used to keep that up to date, but retired recently.
Hey, it was just nice to see you here again! We wish you would pop in and just say hi more often!

Well, I guess I am back to square one as this person seemed to think it solved the problem of Win security not allowing the game to play due to security. I don't think having to Run As Administrator is the problem. I have several older games that have to be Run As Administrator and they work fine. Nor have I ever tried to globally disable UAC. I suspect the reason the games don't run is due to something else. Possibly the DRM, because these "Game Giveaways" aren't exactly "free" games -- there's only one day you can "activate" them, and if something goes wrong with the activation the games won't work.

They've been activated, Jenny. I had the same problem on WIN 7. Who knows? I will not jeopardize the security on my PC. Other games from them, the more simple, un-adventurous types, do not have the gold and blue shield and they work.

Other games from them, the more simple, un-adventurous types, do not have the gold and blue shield and they work. If you had the same problem with the games not working on Windows 7, it sounds like these were games made for XP or maybe even Windows 98. Without knowing which specific games you are talking about we can only guess. The "more simple, un-adventure types" that are working for you may be newer games, or may not make as much use of the registry, or of features of specific versions of DirectX that ran on older versions of Windows. It's also possible the games don't run because of increased security on Windows 7 and 10 or because Windows 7 and 10 don't have older Windows libraries or files that the game uses or puts them in a different location from where the game looks for them.
