Well - here's a bit of an update.

doesn't quite apply. This is not actually a real maze; rather it's a tough problem that's very difficult to understand. Once you understand what's going on, it is not really so bad. I tried to solve it following step-by-step instructions from Three (!!) different walkthroughs, and got constantly messed up. In the process, I came to understand what needed to be done, and got the thing solved
sans walkthrough.
It also helped that a few weeks ago I installed a low-end video card, which made a nice amount of difference. Then a couple of days ago, I added some ram, which made a dramatic difference. Especially in the amount of time it takes to use a transporter. Cut it right in half. Frustration cut in half as well.
So - enough blathering. Yes, I saved right after finishing the 'maze'. And yes, I still hate mazes. Smiling, though.
