If it were me, I would buy the download from GOG here. It has been tweaked to run on Windows 7/8/10 without hassles. And if for some reason it did not, GOG would refund your money. I know of at least one person here who has played the game this way and all went well.

I'm going to agree with Marian. Even with the virtual machine, there may be hardware on the computer which won't work with the game. And if the computer is old, it still needs 3D graphics. Download from GOG and just play!

I am reading on the Steam forum for the game that the Steam version can have this issue whereas the GOG version does not. Here is one of such Steam posts: I wish I could tell you if that worked, but I actually caved and bought the GOG version after weeks of fooling around with .cfg files. I originally tried messing with clock speeds to no avail, though I never tried the specifc speed you provided. I read the GOG version had a recent-ish update to its code and was still very cheap. With exception of in-game resolutions, the only radical difference from the steam .cfg file I noticed was that it allowed for another scaler option called "supereagle." As I said before I have next to no experience with DOSbox, so I don't know if that is a typical option or some custom script the GOG team made.
Anyway, using that scaler the cutscenes played flawlessly, and the gameplay was totally unaffected from what I could tell. Perhaps the steam .cfg file also allows you to type in "supereagle" as a value for the scaler, but I couldn't confirm that as I no longer have the steam version installed. Maybe someone could give that a shot? If it works you shouldn't have to worry about editing any other settings. GOG also provided a nice interface for changing video options as well, without having to edit .cfg files directly. Maybe Steam could update this game and conjure some similar magic sometime? Anyway, the GOG version is the one I am familiar with, not the Steam download. If you want to try to fix the Steam version, I recommend reading through the forum posts about this issue if you haven't already. One suggestion was to try changing the cycle rate in the DOSBox config file. There are several different suggestions.

Have you looked at this discussion at Steam? It's using Dosbox, but discusses making some changes in the config file. But that may or may not be help with the game freezing... that may be something different. I couldn't find any other discussions out there on this problem One guy did say he got tired of messing with config files etc. and just caved and got it from GOG. https://steamcommunity.com/app/287020/discussions/0/34095131831853893/

Can u get gog galaxy on windows xp? It only officially supports Windows 10 now, although I do have it running well on my Windows 7 computer. I would be surprised if it ran on Windows XP and I would not recommend it. Even if you could get it to work, it's not a good idea to be running Windows XP at all unless it is strictly offline and not used for the internet. Oldbroad, good to know that the cutscene issue is not a universal problem with the Steam version.

No, GOG Galaxy won't run on XP. You technically don't need it to download from GOG... you can download files directly. However, you should definitely NOT be running XP on the internet for any reason.
If this is the computer you are trying to play this game on and it has old components, that might be your problem too.

Thing is, if you download Harvester to a Windows 10 computer, you can play it on THAT computer as the game has been tweaked to run on new operating systems. Windows 7 should also NOT be on the internet.
However, if you download a game without using Galaxy, you will just have the files. You can transfer to a flash drive and install on the XP laptop from that flash drive.
I just finished playing Shivers 1 from GOG on my Windows 10 computer. What a treat that was!

I had a post responding yesterday, but it seems to have disappeared! Sorry, yes!
Anyway... I asked "snouts?" Not sure what the means. Also, there should be a .exe file somewhere.

I would guess "snouts" is a mis-type for "abouts" ??

Hmmm... are you sure you downloaded ALL the files? Sometimes there are several if you didn't use GOG Galaxy.
Did you download to your Windows 10 computer?
