I have just signed up for a trial month of this - cloud gaming with a pretty wide selection which means you can play big games on a modest device: has anyone else here tried it?

I've heard of it, but in the past never thought of using it because my internet connection wasn't fast enough. Let us know how it works for you!

So far, very impressive, and particularly good for Apple users such as myself as it removes the problem of how to run Windows games.

However it does need a good internet connection which we now have (after a wait of several years).

There are some free games, but otherwise you have to own or buy digital versions of the games to play them, then linking your digital game library (such as Steam) to your nvidia account. smile

Now letting Apple users have access to some of these games is impressive!

That sounds great Lex. I am also an user. I have an Apple iMac computer with the latest OS and a Radeon Pro 560x 4GB. I also have an old iMac with a Nvidia Geforce GT 512mb.

My problem is a slow internet...high speed internet is not yet available in my area, but is supposed to be within a year.

I look forward to hearing what you think of the trial and how it works out for you.

Keep us posted.

Gerry

Geforce now can run on an iMac from 2009 onwards, and mine is late 2012 using OS Catalina (being too old to take anything more recent), although I also have OS Mohave for older games not viable on Catalina - and most new games suitable for macOS will not run on Catalina.

Currently I am playing Black Mesa and The Talos Principle, with The Witcher 2 and 3 in the queue (having just purchased the latter in the Steam sale for very little - despite having The Witcher 2 on xBox 360 and an old Windows XP DVD...): very good sound and graphics with no buffering, and the wireless Apple keyboard and mouse seem fine despite some suggestion that use of a wired gaming mouse may be preferable. thumbsup

Lex my old iMac is a late 2012 too, and I never updated the operating system to Catalina so I can still play older games on it. My new iMac has the latest Os...I recently upgraded it.

Gerry, I have partitioned my hard drive so that I have the two different OS on the one machine, but of course that lacks the extra power and graphics needed for some of the more recent iMac playable games, another advantage of Geforce Now in addition to playing Windows based games.

Just to note you don't need a "fast" internet, you just need a stable connection. Bog standard (non-fibre) internet is in the realm of 11mbps down (at least here in the UK), and that's all you need. But if your internet speed is dipping below that then you'll have some issues. I've been using the same phone landline broadband internet I've had since 2009 and GFN (and Stadia when it existed) worked flawlessly providing it was at its stable 11mpbs. GFN has some settings to balance graphics, latency etc. The high option uses about 8gb per hour, the lower option about 2gb. Well, I've certainly been able to enjoy a bunch of games I never would have even with a fairly rubbish internet. It was never the speed, it was always down to the stability of the connection, for me. 11mbps, flawless streaming. 10mbps down, yeah...it gets a bit wonky. Funny that.
