[Québec, Canada] October 23, 2024 — From the depths of the cursed marsh, Erupting Avocado, in collaboration with indie.io, unleashes The Hungry Fly, a grotesque psychological horror adventure, today on Steam. Set to be featured in the upcoming Indie Horror Showcase, it has previously appeared in indie showcases like EEK3 and Games to Get Excited About Fest 2024, capturing the attention of horror fans with its unsettling and unique premise.

In The Hungry Fly, players embody a cursed fly navigating a marsh where creatures cannot die, existing in a grotesque limbo. Driven by insatiable hunger, the fly embarks on a strange and disturbing journey to devour a decaying monster, uncovering dark secrets along the way.

Gameplay blends exploration, puzzle-solving, and symbolic storytelling. Players guide the fly through increasingly nightmarish encounters, where each return to the cursed marsh intensifies its hunger and deepens the mystery. The dark fairy tale aesthetic frames the game’s haunting atmosphere, combining bizarre actions with chaotic and surprising narrative moments. Players will scrub the fly clean, soar through decaying landscapes, and perform reality-warping actions as they uncover the mysteries of this cursed world. Every choice they make leads to one of three possible endings, encouraging them to explore different narrative paths.

“We wanted to create a grotesque and nostalgic experience, exploring the dark relationship between insects, drawing inspiration from fables like Fables de La Fontaine and the chaotic nature of fairy tales,” explains François Mathieu, co-creator of The Hungry Fly. “As a fly, you eat forgotten moments, then everything turns to chaos. Many narrative elements are inspired by memories from my childhood—old tapes, strange drawings, and forgotten toys. Some of these relics, like my favorite childhood book L’ourson qui voulait une Juliette, were even scanned or modeled directly into the game”.

With its distinct PS1-style visuals, The Hungry Fly draws players into a haunting tale where the grotesque and the nightmarish collide. Each location, from the decaying marsh to the haunted house and grotesque bath, contributes to the oppressive atmosphere, immersing players in a warped, unsettling world.

“Our goal was to have players reflect on their journey, allowing them to craft their own meaning from the story,” shares The Hungry Fly co-creator Jonathan Guertin. “The surreal narrative leaves space for players to complete the story in their minds, and we’re excited to hear how they interpret the game. In video games, you can embody more than just a human form, and we love creating gameplay where players control unexpected things. In The Repairing Mantis, we let players control the thoughts of the characters. With The Hungry Fly, we’ve taken that idea even further. You’ll have to discover it for yourself”

The Hungry Fly is now available on Steam for USD 9.99, with a 10% launch discount. Enter the cursed marsh, uncover its secrets, and discover the meaning behind this disturbing tale. Follow Erupting Avocado on X/Twitter for updates and community support.
