Released in 1998, I remember when I first played Sanitarium,
as well as my anticipation at playing it. I was a recent convert
to adventures and in exploring what to play had come across it.
It sounded like nothing I had played to date, and it intrigued me.
As this was back in the days when you needed a physical copy
I searched one out. And eventually got to fire it up.

In short, “what the??” But in a very good way.

That was then and this is now, and I found it on Steam recently
and felt compelled to try it again. It wasn’t just nostalgia, but
that it still has an impact on far more modern games (Stasis and
Stangeland come to mind). 25 years later “what the” still fits.

So does “bonkers fever dream.”

Crazy to think it's been 25 years for this gem! Thanks for the trip down memory lane, flotsam!

Thank you, Drac!

Definitely a golden oldie, and one of my favorites. Thank you very much for the review, flotsam! happydance

I always wished that Dreamforge had made more adventure games. They came close with Veil of Darkness which was kind of a hybrid RPG/adventure. My favorite RPG of theirs is Anvil of Dawn.

And thank you for your help, Drac. smile

Thanks for the review, flotsam! I played the disc version, and somewhere prior to 2018 I replayed the GOG version which I found to be kind of glitchy in my Windows 7. I do have the Steam version also. Did you have any tech problems with it? I also have the movie from 2003: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0361507/

May be time for a replay again.

What an excellent game this was. Your review was definitely like Ana mentioned a trip down memory lane and has me wanting to play it again, it's been so many years. Thank you

Thank you Drac

I had no idea they made a movie out of the game oldbroad. I will have to look that one up

I am not at all sure that the movie was based on the game; I think they just have the same name? Did the movie follow the events of the game, ob?

I watched it so long ago that I don't really remember what it was about exactly but it did start with a car accident and the man's name was Max. I did see that there is another game from 2013 that IS NOT the same as this one.
My sister and I watched it and then played the game together or maybe played the game first and then watched it? Anyway, that would be at least 15 years ago or more. If I wasn't so lazy, I could watch the movie again and let you know. smile

I had a couple of runtime errors oldbroad that required me to exit and re-enter the game, but they seemed to coincide with me doing other things at the same time on the pc (Alt-Tabbing between windows). I don't remember any errors occurring when I just played the game.

Doing the HTML conversion for this review was quite a trip down memory lane! Thank you, flotsam!
