Just came across an article regarding the status of Dire Wolves being "brought back out of extinction". Amazing and very cool, but somewhat scary in a way. Thought others might be interested in this marvel of modern day genetic sciences.

No Longer Extinct? Colossal Biosciences' Dire Wolf Project

Interesting, thanks. Not sure what I actually think of it though.

I think this is just too cool for words! The lack of genetic diversity in serious and this research could help preserve some species from disappearing.

Maybe this will motivate George R.R. Martin to finish his next A Song of Ice and Fire novel. duh

It's nice to be important but it is much more important to be nice.

I saw a picture of George R.R. Martin holding one of the Dire Wolf pups! I think it was fake, but still....

The pups are beautiful but are actually hybrid wolves. DNA from the dire wolf was inserted into the gray wolf, which is the closest genetically to the dire but still a separate species.

Yup, basically designer grey wolves with genes controlling certain physical attributes that make them resemble a Dire wolf. The exercise was more of a marketing event for Colossal Biosciences rather than an actual exercise promoting the potential of lab crafted bio-diversity.

Yup. They genetically altered enough grey wolf genes to make them resemble Dire Wolves. Am I correct in thinking I have read that the real Dire Wolf was MUCH bigger than today's wolves?

Yes, Dire Wolves were about 25% larger than modern-day gray wolves, dire wolves had thicker, more muscular legs, more powerful shoulders, and a wider head and snout with larger jaws and teeth. It stood about 3½ feet tall, could be longer than 6 feet and weigh up to 150 pounds. [USA Today, 10 Apr 25]
