There is a patch from Packard Bell that restores a file that is often deleted when SP2 is installed. It is called dosapps_sp2_patch.exe You can get it *here* . just follow the on screen directions and you don't need to insert the WindowXP disk into the CDdrive. ********************************************* The Compatibility Mode in Windows 2000 has to be enabled. You won't see it by default. Check here Support Microsoft Windows IT Pro ******************************************* If you get a 16-bit MS-DOS Subsystem error when installing a game, there is a download at Softpedia that should help. Check here . Thankyou Visionisn & Blbsbet44 This one may need the Windows XP CD inserted into the CDROM or DVDROM Drive. ******************************************* Microsoft's support link for the 16-bit MS-DOS Subsystem error in XP gives a manual fix for the problem. 16-bit MS-DOS Subsystem Errors ******************************************* Robert Gault discovered another fix for a Win16 Subsystem error. He was getting the following message when trying to install an older Windows game: "The Win16 Subsystem was unable to enter Protected Mode, DOSX.EXE must be in your AUTOEXEC.NT and present in your PATH." His solution was to reinstall redir.exe, himem.sys, command.com, and mscdexnt.exe from his Windows XP CD. Quote: The files were reinstalled by opening a MS-DOS prompt window, changing to the WinXP CDROM i386 directory, and issuing the command for each file: expand filename C:\windows\system32\filename Note that filename on the CDROM is not the same as the file name on the hard drive. For example: expand redir.ex_ C:\windows\system32\redir.exe Note that in his case, his autoexec.nt was not the problem. ******************************************* From http://www.tweakguides.com/ Quote: Microsoft Releases Fix for SafeDisc 30 April 2005 If you're running games under a restricted user account with fast user switching under Windows XP, some games won't start properly - the game may ask you to insert the original disk in the drive, even when it's already there. This is due to the SafeDisc copy protection system used by some games. The two ways to fix this are to either run games under an Administrator-level account (recommended) or download and apply this MS SafeDisc Fix . ******************************************** Download the Starforce removal tool from here http://onlinesecurity-on.com/downloads/sfdrvrem.zip Unzip the file and double-click the unzipped removal tool. If you want to check to make sure it did its job, and you have Win 2000 or XP, follow these steps: First enable the viewing of hidden drivers in Device Manager using the procedure outlined here http://www.petri.co.il/display_phantom_drivers_in_windows_2000_xp_2003.htm or by doing the following: Click Start->Run->CMD SET DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1 START DEVMGMT.MSC In the window that opens, Click View/Show all hidden devices. StarForce drivers will show up in Device Manager under Non-Plug and Play Drivers when "Show hidden Devices" is checked in the View menu.
