(I love this message board!) smile

I just installed The Awakening. Everything seems to work fine (though I'm not loving trying to figure out where a mouse action cursor will appear, but I'll get used to that). However, I am having an issue with dialogs. I'm struggling to get people to talk to me. For instance, it took me three attempts (each approaching from a different direction) to get the newspaper boy to talk to me. Next to the newspaper boy there was a policeman by the corner... never could get him to talk to me. Had no trouble getting the flower lady to say hello to me. Had no trouble talking to the bookstore guy. But now I need to talk to two people that Watson just pointed out to me (a policeman and another man) and I can't get them to start the dialog. I've walked up really close to them. I've stood back from them, etc.

So, I guess what I'm asking is... is there a trick to doing this? Am I being kinda stupid and not getting something that should be obvious to me?

When the conversation doesn't start automatically, do you hit the space bar on your keyboard to see if a conversation is possible?

To get the dialogue box is positiional. You either have to face them head on and close. Good luck.

Thanks, nickie!

My first posting so I hope it's in the right place. I cannot get dialogue between Stenwick and Holmes when Holmes returns to speak to him after using the ladder on the other side of the wall. Stenwick says "have you found anything Mr Holmes?" but no reply from Holmes. I have a walkthrough and have checked everything but the weird thing is I had the same problem when playing a trial of the game from a CD which came with the PC magazine I get so I must be missing something. I have started the game twice but cannot advance. Any thoughts?

Edit:
At the back of the shed should there be dialogue regarding the missing nail from the right footprint? The walkhtrough isn't clear. If so, I cant get doalogue there and that may be the start of the problem. How frustrating to be so close to the beginning of the game.

Hi blackbird and welcome to Gameboomers welcome
This first part of the game relies heavily on your finding clues and exploring them as much as possible at the scene.
Be sure that you used the magnifying glass on the shoeprint. I believe Sherlock will make a remark but I'm not positive. Did you find the fish scale and pick it up in the same area? Did you find a pick up pieces of cloth from the shed as well as off the fence railing?
Did you look carefully at the design on the floor of the shed? Did you pick up that black ball of stuff from the pan in the shed?
Once you have all the clues you need, Sherlock will talk to Stenwick and Watson and you should be able to leave the area.
Good luck

Sue

Thanks Sue. Yes I have double checked everything even measured the footprint which my walkthrough didn't mention. My walkthrough (MaGtRo) says "take note that the right footprint is missing a nail" so it's not clear whether there should be dialogue or not. If so and I don't have it I guess that's where the problem is. I'll keep trying.

Blackbird all I can suggest is to go back over all the hotspots you may find in this part of the game and be sure you have clicked on all of them.
Did you click on the door to make sure the lock had not been forced?

Ron and blackbird, I'll be happy to make both of you a saved game and send it to ya'll.
My game is on DVD and the saves will only be compatible with DVD games.
What are your games on please?

I purchased and downloaded my game from gamesplanet. I still have the dvd which came with PCWorld (NZ) mag and had a demo on it so I might try that because if I am getting stuck at the same place on that as well then obviously I'm missing something. Would still like confirmation that there should be dialogue at the footprint with the missing nail.

Thanks

Sorry didn't answer your question. Yes chked door was not forced. Even found that Holmes should talk to Rufles twice during first visit to Stenwick house.

If I remember correctly, Holmes will say that something about the missing nail.

I have found the problem. My demo disk has dialogue at the footprints and you can actually see the imprint of the nails and the missing nail on the footprint so when Homes returns to Stenwicks house from using the ladder to get the fibre they commence talking and then the game returns to Baker St. In my full game you can't see the imprint of the nail and there is no dialogue. I could try uninstalling and reinstalling the game but it uses nearly all my 3GB monthly broadband data allowance and at our speeds takes 6 hours to download!. What to do?

blackbird,

I have a saved game only at the end of the part by the outside wall. Also my game is patched.

I will send it to you and you can see if it will load in your game. If it loads, you can find out what happened by reading the walkthrough.

Ron,

I sent you when Holmes is outside the wall.
Check the inventory, documents and also the walkthrough on where you are now.
That is the closest saved game I have.

Thank you so much for a saved game. In the end I didn't use it as when I tried the game for about the 6th time the full footprints were visible and I got dialogue. I wondered whether it was something to do with my installing the demo DVD and that I was playing the demo by mistake but I'm up to where Holmes & Watson are off to Switzerland so hopefully that means I'm playing the full game so I'll just keep going and see what happens. I've got your save if needed.

That's great. In this game, check the documents, the items and talk to the characters completely. It is very logical. Enjoy the game.

Hi Sue, its NON. Am trying to play SH again and am having the save trouble as above. I seem to remember the first time that somewhere in the back section of the yard there is a hint thing about the weight of the burgler. Can't find it as hard as I try. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

What burglar Non? I remember measuring footprints but don't remember estimating any weights?

Sorry Sue perhaps it was wishful thinking. I thought I remembered a spot other than the footprints you measure where he says something. Sue by burgler I ment who ever got Sstenwick's servant.
Any way, how to I get past this part.
Thanks, NON

Be sure to use the magnifying glass on the shoe prints on the ground Non, especially the right one. You need to note and hear Sherlock note that it's missing a nail. Grab the fish scale from that same area. There is a piece of material hanging from the top door jamb you need to get, click on the door lock for the shed door, use the eye on the drawing on the floor and grab that ball of black stuff out of the wok looking thing on the floor. Go outside the fence and use the ladder to grab a piece of material off the iron railing. I don't remember having to get anything other than those items.
Good luck

Sue
