I've tried to use the eavesdropping skill so many different times to get Hansen to say the magic words, but he just keeps screaming. What am I doing wrong?

ophelia: to get him say the magical words you have first to ask him the question "Does it still hurt you?". Then end the dialogue and immediately use the Eavesdropping skill (without exiting to the office). If you don't have this dialogue options available, it means you didn't read the corresponding part of the diary.

You'll recognize the correct usage because ghost will automatically exit the secret corridor if done right.

I have looked at the walkthrough for Neils the squid/octopus/flute. I just can't seem to get through this section, even though I have gone over that part in the walkthrough. Any help here, would be much appreciated.
