Hi funkyhippy, I haven't played the game and I don't use a gamepad, so I am absolutely no help whatsoever. But might this visual walkthrough be of help?

One in the central main room downstairs next to the stacked up crates and one in the library next to the room where you find the pistols.

Hi everyone,
Thanks so much for answering. I will try to reply in order.
Nickie and Oldman, I appreciate Stella's web site, but although it will come in handy in the future, it doesn't solve my immediate problem which is to get out of the library. According to a WT I read, I'm supposed to jump and grap a picture frame, but no matter how many times I've jumped, I can't grab the frame.
Hugh, I'm playing Tomb Raider Anniversary.
Robert, thanks for the tip on the "game axes" , at the moment the right joystick does nothing, so your instructions will be very helpful and in answer to your question, I'm in the library.
Also, am I right in thinking that you don't get as many clues here as you do in Adventure games? Is one supposed to try to jump and grab things just to see if it works or if something happens?
Thanks again,
funkyhippy

Here are the some screenshots to show you the steps. If you are unfamiliar with the running/jumping and grabbing, the controls are shown here Hope this helps.

Cathy 1,
I don't have the grapple. I understand I'm supposed to shoot the ring on the lamp and I do, but nothing happens. Another strange thing is that I picked-up the silver elephant by shooting the glass, but I don't see it in my inventory.
funkyhippy The Elephant is not an inventory item. It's an "Artifact". When you collect the Relics and Artifacts in the game it unlocks things like custom outfits etc. It's really not necessary to get them. You can complete the game without doing so. What "lamp" are you referring to? Are you still in the Library? Did you manage to jump and grab the picture frame, then jump back and shoot the target behind it? This sounds like you're not using the "Combat Mode Toggle" button. Go into the game's "Controls" menu (Click on Controls) and map an easily accessable button or trigger to use the Combat Mode Toggle feature. Just scroll the list until you see it, then bind it to whichever button you want on your gamepad. Then when you press that button, Lara will pull her pistols (or whatever weapon that's equipped) and automatically target any enemy or any target that she can shoot that's near her. At the top of the Control options menu you'll see "Combat Mode". That allows you to select how you want to use the combat mode. If you set it to "manual", Lara will pull her pistols and auto-target as long as you hold down the button. When you release the button she'll put her pistols away. If you choose "Advanced Toggle", she will pull her pistols and you do not have to hold down the button. She'll put them away when you press the button again. Did you get your right thumbstick working? It's important to do that if you're going to use a gamepad. You need to be able to look around with your right thumbstick. You won't get the Grappling Hook until you go through the maze outside the manor.

Robert,
I did get the right thumbstick working. My settings are: Advanced Toggle, Manual Grab On, Button 3 Jump, Button 2 Crouch, Button 1 Interact (such as reading). For the moment Button 4 does nothing, that may be because I don't have the grappling hook.
I am still in the library and have jumped I don't know how many times at the picture, but I always seem to miss. I've tried doing it from a standing position right at the edge and also to come running and jump. Nothing works.
I've tried shooting at a ring that hangs below a chandelier in the library because I seem to have read somewhere that that gives me the grappling hook. In any event, when I aim at it, the circle turns blue so I assume that means something.
I have the map to the maze and the guns.
Thanks for your patience.

Turn "manual grab" off. Lara will then automatically reach out and grab any ledge or crevice (or picture frame) she can jump to. **edit** I've tried shooting at a ring that hangs below a chandelier in the library because I seem to have read somewhere that that gives me the grappling hook. In any event, when I aim at it, the circle turns blue so I assume that means something. You must have mis-understood what you read. That "ring" in the chandelier is something you can fire your grappling hook at to climb up or swing from one place to another like Tarzan on a vine. You'll first have to get the grappling hook. Anything that lights up with a blue circle means it's for your grappling hook. Anything that lights up in a red circle is a target you can shoot at with your pistols. P.S. I don't want to spoil anything for you, but if want you can watch the two Tomb Raider Anniversary videos (Lara Croft Combat and The Adventures of Lara Croft) in my signature below. It'll give you an idea of what's in store for you

Funkyhippy, weren't the links on the first page of this thread of any help with that?

Yes, I'm in the Gym, exactly where you ask, on the opposite wall to the entrance. I looked at the controls setup, all I see is Z Axis & Z Rotation; Invert Gamepad X Axis, Invert Gamepad Y Axis. I can tell you that the left thumbstick moves her, the right is the camera, the 1 button is for interacting, the 2 button is for crouching (and dropping) the 3 button is for jumping and the 4 button is for the grapple. Also, she only seems to be able to throw the grapple straight forward, is that normal?

she only seems to be able to throw the grapple straight forward, is that normal? Yes. That's normal. Let me go into the game and play that section. It'll take a little while, as I'll have to get the grapple hook first. I'll be back in a little while. **edit** I made a short video showing you how to use Grapple at the very place where you're stuck in the Gym. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZ55EqNdJQAIf you don't have a broadband connection to watch that video, then I'm not sure what you're doing wrong, unless perhaps you're not jumping from the very top ledge on that rock. All you have to do is... 1. Climb to the top ledge (Jump and grab the first one, then vault up to the one above. Then climb around to the left and vault up again. That should as high as you can go) 2. Move your thumbstick to make lara look behind her. 3. Hold your thumbstick in that postion and press Jump. 4. Release jump and press Grapple (only press it once). There is a way you can download the video if your internet connection isn't fast enough to stream it. I think it's only about 3MB in size. Just follow the directions here... http://keepvid.com/You also need to install the free FLV player to play it if you download it. The FLV player is clean and doesn't have any spyware. If you still can't get it, then I wanted you to click on "Controls" in the main menu and list how all your buttons and keys are assigned.
