I honestly never believed that I would ever find a site such as this containing like minded people who enjoy playing the same games that I do!
I loved all the Myst games ( and cried a tear when they closed down), the Broken Sword games and I also love role playing games,so count me in! I am 63 years old and live in United Kingdom. Didn't know really where to put this 'introduction' as there isn't a introduce yourself thread, so here I am!
I played the demo of Scratches and was intent on buying it, and Barrow Hill now that I have found all of you I shall certainly be trying out more Adventures!

Any recommendations from you all? I tried the demo of Penumbra yesterday and not my cup of tea, liked the Sherlock Homes demo and will be getting Jack Keene when it comes out. I don't mind spooky either.

Hi technogran and welcome to GameBoomers! welcome

I'm sure others will chime in with recommendations -- one game that springs to mind with Myst-style puzzles but with a third person perspective and more character interaction is Keepsake.

You might also want to stop by our the GameBoomers' Dark Side forum where the RPG gamers gather.

Whoo-Hoo!!! Glad to hear from another 'boomer!! This is the best site on the planet for talking about adventure games and also for asking for help! They have a great bunch of moderators and the ''Glitches'' forum is outstanding!! There's a bunch of smart people there happy to help and they don't make you ashamed you asked!!! AND you have got to check out the 'Trading Post' !! you can get a lot of games there!! and most members will ship to the UK!....You will like Scratches(if you like nice n creepy games!!)...if you decide to buy it go ahead and get the final 'Director's Cut' edition of it...they added a bit to it and also fixed a couple areas...Barrow Hill is good too, and i just finished The Darkness: Loath Nolder and boy....talk about CREEPY!!! but i have to warn...i believe it is to be a series of 3 games...this is the first one....i didn't realize that before i pre-ordered or i would've waited until all three were out!...'cause once you finish the first you want the 2nd right away! There are 2 Darkfall games that are good...(and they're made by a gentleman in the UK!! AND his 3rd is about to be released in believe in March..The Lost Crown!).. If you haven't played Aura it is a wonderful game! a good story and BEAUTIFUL!!!...also if you can check out the Last Half of Darkness website...that gentleman is another independent developer and has put out 3 games in that series and boy each one is just better and better, the last one Beyond the Spirit's Eye was just terrific!!! (can't wait for his next one!)...
so..those are a few i would recommend..also Syberia, and if you like a somewhat solitary type game (hardly any character interaction at all....lots of exploring and puzzle solving!!! wonderful!!)the Rhem games are good....2 are out and the 3rd to be here pretty soon!! (i have to warn though...those puzzles...they are doozies!!). i'm going to be 60 this year!..there is a great mix of people here...you will really enjoy this site!

welcome

Yeah its very rare to find a community who likes point and click adventure games as most ppl like first person shooter games, which i do as well but i do have a special love for adventure games. The people here are the best people you can find, there all mature kind respecting people not like on some other forums you sometimes come across. I love it here and hope you will come to love it here too.

We hope you enjoy your stay. thumbsup

Hi technogran, welcome to this lovely, friendly & helpful site! I agree, a good place to start would be to take a look at the GameBoomers Annual Game list & check out the GB reviews for descriptive & honest insights into the many games out there.

Also many games just don't turn up in UK stores, so internet shopping is the only way to go!

As well as checking out the Trading Post here, I would also recommend Play.com for Uk releases - it's based in Jersey & delivery is free; & InteractCD for US releases (link at top of this page) - a small friendly company, shipping cost are reasonable & games usually arrive within 4-5 days.

And if anything from one of the Independant Developers takes your fancy - you can often buy them direct via the link also at the top of this page. smile

Hi Technogran. So glad you found the site! I hope you have fun here and btw, I'm always tickled to meet others who are into games like I am, and who are "older". I'm 38 and have been into games since I was 12 and played Pong on Atari (lol), but I'm the only adult in my "real life" who still plays games. Guess part of me has refused to ever grow up, and I'm happy about that. smile

Welcome and hope you have a great time with those games you mentioned; there are many more to look forward to as well!

Well what can I say? Thank you all very much for welcoming me to your site, I only wish that I had found it sooner! Yes I have already perused the Top 30 games thread, the new and on there way thread and read a load of reviews.
I have ordered from Play.com Darkness Within,Barrow Hill and Jack Keene, been also playing lots and lots of demo's, didn't like Penumbra, did like Aura (which I have ordered the first one seems very Myst like) but some demo's I couldnt get to work.
My machine is a Dell420 with Vista and a Directx10 compatable Nvidia Geforce 8600 GTS and my monitor likes 1400x900 display, so some of the old games I guess I will have problems with.

I also have tried the Sherlock Holmes one (think its the latest, but I am annoyed as the only Myst that I hadn't been able to dig up was Riven, I had replayed all the others only recently, managed to find it locally in a 'Myst the Collection' box, and damnation, can't get it to install at all, some problem with installing Quicktime.
I should get the Darkness Within game sometime next week (Monday I hope!)

Scouring the 'what is soon to be released, the Rhionon game looks interesting as does Belief and Betrayal. Once I found this site and all your recommendations, I spent all last week just downloading demo's which brings me to a request If I dare be so bold. I usually use Gamespot for downloads of demo's but would love it if this forum could recommend download sites (for example where do most of you download demo's from, which site is best for quicker and safer downloads? Is it better to download from the actual games site?

Sorry to be such a pest but I would have loved to see a 'download recommended site' in a demo thread, and a 'will this demo run on your set up' would be also handy. (Don't want much do I?)

So thanks again for the warm welcome, and you never know I might be doing a review or two this year once I get some games under my belt!

TG,

To have a download recommended site, that depends on the gamer's taste. And the demo run on your setup will depend on the gamer's computer. So it is best that whatever demo we find that is available is posted.
The members can post their experiences about the download site and problems if any on downloading the demo. So keep tabs on the postings.
