I am thinking of buying The Longest Journey but I'm not sure if this game will work on my computer. My computer specs are as follows:

Quote:

1. Operating system
Windows Vista™ Home Premium (6.0, Build 6000)
2. Processor model and speed
Genuine Intel(R) CPU T2250 @ 1.73GHz (2 CPUs), ~1.7GHz
3. Amount of memory (RAM)
1014MB RAM
4. Video card brand and model
Mobile Intel(R) 945GM Express Chipset Family
5. The driver name/version
igdumd32.dll / 7.14.0010.1114
6. The driver date
11/5/2006 19:29:36, 2105344 bytes

The specifications for The Longest Journey are as follows:

Quote:

Minimum System Requirements:
Windows 95/98, 2000, XP
Pentium 166 MMX
32 MB ram
4x CD-ROM Drive
Mouse and Keyboard
640*480 SVGA high colour (16bit) video card with 2 MB ram
Windows compatible sound device
300 MB free hard drive space

Recommended System Requirements:
Pentium II, 266 mhz
64 MB ram
3d accelarator card ( Direct 3d compatible ) with 4 mb ram
8x CD-ROM drive
1GB free hard drive space

Do you think The Longest Journey will run on my computer? I'm worried about the Intel(R) 945GM Express Chipset not running this game. I don't want to end up spending money on a game I cannot play.

I would be surprised if your laptop couldn't handle it, however there is a demo on the TLJ site: demo page.

Download and try that, it should give you a good indication whether your money will be wasted.

Good idea Gremlin. I couldn't get the game to play in XP so you really should try the demo first Mission.

So many games, so little time.

With the old 4 CD version, if you were using Windows 2000 or XP, you had to run the game directly from the Game.exe instead of from the Launcher.

With the new 2 CD version, I don't think this is necessary.
The 2 CD version has had several patches.

That doesn't mean the 4 CD version didn't need patches to run well on newer computers -- only that the more recent 2 CD version is the only one they bothered to patch.

Thank you all for the inputs.

I'm going ahead to buy this game.

I'm on a dial-up, I don't think I can deal with the downloading of the demo.

Not my day. This box cover which looks like an European release has the following:

Photo of back box cover

Quote:
Onboard/Integrated graphic chipsets and laptops are not supported

If Future Games can come up with Nibiru which has decent graphics playable on integrated graphic chipsets or Deep Silver can come up with Secret Files: Tunguska which again has decent graphics playable on integrated graphic chipsets, why can't the people who developed the Longest Journey or Overclocked come up with decent graphics that can run on onboard/integrated graphic chipsets?

Laptops are very common these days. And these days, laptops are inexpensive. Walk into any college or university, you will see almost every student has a laptop. Maybe high schools too. Laptop, today is a must have tool for every student, just like a writing pad and pen. The other group of laptop users are people who use laptops as a desktop replacement. A laptop has many advantages over a desktop. No messy wires. Can work on laptop at any place, attic, bathroom, garage etc.

Game developers need to recognize that there is a large market of laptop users out there. By not supporting onboard/integrated graphic chipsets, they are not essentially losing that market segment. They can't say it is not technically feasible. Future Games and Deep Silver did it with Nibiru and Secret Files: Tunguska which runs fine on onboard/integrated graphic chipsets.

"Not supported" doesn't necessarily mean it won't run -- just that they won't help you with it if you have problems.

If you've played Nibiru and Tunguska on your laptop, you might try TLJ. It's not that expensive.

Jenny, Thanks for the clarifications and you are right. I've ordered TLJ from FunCom. It's a DVD version and selling for $14.61. Since this game is at least 8 years old, I think/hope my laptop will be able to run it.

Good luck, Mission, it would be such a shame if you can't enjoy this classic.

For laptop/Vista gamers interested in this game.

The Longest Journey (DVD version) works on Vista and on integrated graphics chip set.

Quote:
The Longest Journey (DVD version)
Patch installed: tlj-patch-161.exe
Operating System: Windows Vista™ Home Premium
Display: Mobile Intel(R) 945GM Express Chipset Family

The installation runs smoothly without any errors. I installed patch version 161 after the installation. I then launched the game and was able to play the game. I completed the Prologue and going into Chapter 1.
