Has anyone received the Everlight game? Is the Everlight box a hard case or a soft case?

Hard case eg. plastic case as in Dracula Origin
Soft case eg. cardboard case as in Murder in the Abbey

thanks in advance.

I don't think developers like the small DVD cases as they don't jump in your face on the store shelves like the bigger cardboard cases.

I prefer the plastic cases as they take up much less room on my shelf, which is very crowded, and are easier for me to ship if I ever decide to sell or trade them.

Besides, most of these games never seem to make it to store shelves around here, I buy mainly of the net now. cool

I'm looking for a new game. What's the impression of Everlight?

Third person perspective, a medieval-like fantasy world with magic, wonderful fantasy-world graphics, some really quirky characters, a bit of edgy stuff that's a bit off-putting, (including a fighting couple who shout vulgarities), lots of dialog, decent writing with the occasional very funny line, good story, mostly inventory-based puzzles. On the longer side, especially when compared to recent games (I'm in chapter four of five.)

The English language localization is very good -- I'm impressed.

Are we going to have a review for this soon? I'd rather see a review from GB before buying this.

The GB review staff is working overtime at the moment (lots of games have released lately). Um, how would you define "soon"? lol

I've been trying to decide if I should buy this game. I read the review at Gamespot and am totally undecided.

http://uk.gamespot.com/pc/adventure/everlight/review.html

The Bad
  • Poor translation messes up both plot structure and quest coherence
  • Generic quest design is all about odd jobs and favors
  • Frequent, long load times
  • Dated character models

  • All of the 3D character models are disturbingly mannequin-like, with few facial features and mouths that move independently of the actual spoken dialogue.
  • There are so few locations in the game that you can't help being annoyed by trudging down the same streets and entering the same buildings over and over again.
  • An even bigger annoyance is the amount of time needed to load these scenes. It seems like each location is loaded from scratch every time you enter it, so simply going from one street to another, entering a house, or even pulling up the map screen to take a shortcut to another part of town causes a load of between 5 and 10 seconds.

Edit:

There is a boomer review here at:

Pentel -- I'm looking at your summary. Yes, the load times are rather long, though I don't think I ever sat for a full 10 seconds -- the amount of time may very according to your computer.

The game is set up so that it's nonlinear when within the individual chapters -- I think that the nonlinearity is what can make the quests seem less coherent -- that is a common side-effect of striving to give the player lots of choice, frankly.

Also, a lot of the plot and background story are explained in dialogs rather than in documents -- so if you aren't paying attention, it's easy to miss the explanations. I understood the plot better on the second playthrough (again, this is common, at least for me, in games with a lot of dialog). Some of the explanations are optional -- depending on which dialogs you choose to initiate, and how much you choose to talk to Fiona, your elf guide (she provides optional background information at several points in the game).

The game was developed in German, so I didn't expect perfect lip synch. I thought the translation was very good -- I've seen much, much poorer translations in games. It's possible that some of the humor was sharper in the original German, but humor is always difficult to translate. I never "cringed" at any misused words or slang that didn't work or typos in the subtitles. Somebody put a lot of work into the English localization, IMHO.

Thank you, Becky for the feedback. Those are not my summary, I cut-and-paste them from the Gamespot review. Sounds like a fun game with genies and elfs. I may pick Everlight up when I see it at the stores.
