Hi there

I bought the Jack Keane game last week and it doesn't seem to work... When I installed it there weren't any error messages or anything but now when I try to load it (either in normal or minimum mode)the screen goes black with a timer and then takes me straight back to Windows...

When I contacted the seller they said to go to the manufacturer and when I went to the URL that's shown on the box it doesn't work!!

Help!

Cara

welcome Cara!

Could you provide some information about your computer? (processor type, amount of memory, type of video card)

Cara,

I had to reload mine several times to get it to work. I did however get it changed by the supplier and the new one was OK. If it is faulty they should change it. It is not up to the manufacturer.

If you look at the screen when downloading the faulty one of mine showed an error message (very quickly) against particular files but continued to load. Initially I had much the same symptoms as you, but they varied depending on which files did not load.

I think it may be a "www.deck13.com" game but their site only seems to be half working.

Don't know if this helps.

Did you download your game from a website or are you talking about installing the game from a DVD?

Hi there! Thanks for the help! my laptop's a Dell Inspiron I6400 (I think) 1.66ghz, 10GB free space...

The guy that I bought it from seemed to think I needed a patch for it from the maunfacturer, but I've tried 10Tacle, deck 13, kalypso, and www.jackkeane.com and nothing's really helping...

(It's the DVD version)

THanks for the Welcome!! (sorry for taking so long to reply, there's a bit of a time diff and I can't get on here when I'm at work) smile

Cara, update DirectX (can be found on the DVD).
Update the video drivers at Dell.com.
Reboot and try to play JK again. luck

Nope frown (although I do think it the black screen stayed up longer than before) I installed all the video drivers they had on the European Dell site as the American one didn't seem to have my laptop... Not completely sure if they were the right drivers though frown

Why is nothing ever easy!?

There's no need to install all the drivers, just the most recent one.
Please run DXDiag and look at the screen tab, post the driver version you have here. I can check then if you have the latest one.

From what I can find, a Dell 6400 can have one of three graphic chipsets:
Mobility Radeon X1300
Mobility Radeon X1400
Nvidia Geforce Go 7300

Do you know which one you have?

EDIT -- it looks like the 6400 can have Intel Graphics too, at least with the UK version.

Bernard, I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for, but under the display tab it says:

Main Driver: ialmrnt5.dll
Version: 6.12.0010.4446 (English)
Date: 13/12/2005 23:01:20
WHQL Logo'd: Yes
Mini VDD: ialmnt5.sys
VDD: n/a
DDI Version: 9(or higher)

With the graphic chipsets I'm not really sure, but I found something that mentions Mobile Intel(R) 945GM Express Chipset Family...

The driver installed is for an Intell chipset. It doesn't match with the computer model you said you have! Please, check your computer and verify it's brand and type.
The driver looks to be outdated (2005). frown

ialmrnt5.dll would be the driver for some type of Intel graphics.
From what it says on the Dell UK website, this would be Intel 945GM graphics chipset on the Inspiron 6400.

There are newer drivers for this model ***here***. I don't know if they'd fix your problem though.

luck Cara, will you let us know if it worked? smile

Edit:
In the BIOS can you adjust the memory assigned to the video card?
Set it to it's highest level.

frown nope didn't work...

Had a wee look about while I was waiting for it to download and seems like a lot of people are having the same problem, though it doesnt seem to be fixed on any of the manufacturer's sites.

Just noticed that some sites say you need a 1.6ghz processor and some say 2 so went and checked the box... it says 2ghz frown

Think I'm going to have to head to bed here and have another go tomorrow... Firemen to look after in the morning!

The processor speed isn't the part causing the troubles Cara. It seems the video chipset isn't able to deal with the game. Did you change the video card's memory in the BIOS, like I suggested? Another thing that can be important, have you already updated the sound drivers? What's the size of memory in your laptop?

Can't seem to get into the BIOS, downloaded an update from Dell for it too and the sound...

Laptop memory should be 60GB but there's 10GB of that that's free space.

Starting to think I should be going back to good old Monkey Island!!

To get into the BIOS, try clicking the F2 key repeatedly when first starting the computer. I think Dell usually uses F2 to access the BIOS.

Hi Jenny thanks it was F2, it was starting up too quick for me to see what it wanted me to press!

There doesn't seem to be anything on the BIOS that I can change video wise (just the brightness), think I might have to head back to the distributor and tell them that the game might be faulty...

Hi everyone, spoke to the supplier and got a replacement game, but it doesn't seem to work either. Noticed when I'm installing it that it says copy failed at 2 of the parts near the end? I have a screenshot of the installation but don't know if I can put it up here...

Cara,
Have you had chance to try a different DVD drive. Although I had to change my first game the replacement one would not load properly on one of my drives I have had no problems with any other game on this drive. It showed errors while loading. However no problem with my other drive. As an experiment I tried loading it on 3 other drives, no problem at all. So if you can borrow/steal an external usb drive try that.
No idea if this will help but it is the best I can do.
