Hi cazol, Are you standing close enough to the door to unlock it? The SH games are fussy with regard to positioning, so try adjusting where Holmes is standing. Double check that you are at the correct door. Do you have more than one key in your inventory? Make sure you're picking up the correct key if so. , let us know how you get on.

Hi Betty, Can you clarify - are you waiting for the guard to appear with the ladder? Or is this a different guard?

Thanks. You don't need to examine all the paintings at this point, but make sure that you have done the following: Examine (with magnifying glass) and measure (with tape, so Holmes will note the size) the footprints: In front of the crown jewel painting On the right side of the stairs (examine all prints, Holmes comments) In the Restoration room (2 sets) Outside the Director's office (make sure Holmes mentions Velmont) Look at the rug and glass ceiling in the Restoration room. Examine the rubber marks on the floor where the Fighting Temeraire was hung (English gallery). Look up at the note on the ceiling. , let us know if you still have problems.

This is a really picky area of the game, it may be that you've missed measuring/examining a footprint somewhere along the line. You could try rechecking all prints just to make sure.
I have a saved game directly after the ladder has been returned, I'll gladly e-mail it across to you if you would like it.

Hi Dusty, You might need to crouch down while looking in this area, see if that helps to get the hand cursor.

You should be checking the 3rd column along from the start of Area E. As it's the 6th row then the book should actually appear on the top shelf, so you won't need to crouch after all.
