If you're unable to pick up any of Enrico's cards from those he has laid down, then it is best to lay a low card of your own, as they are not worth so many points. The aim of the game is to capture cards from the table by playing a card of your own that equals those card(s) in value, for example, if a 3 and a 2 are already on the table and you have a 5 in your own hand, play that and you can pick up both 3 and 2. An 8, 9 and 10 card can only capture another 8, 9 or 10 if these are already on the table, and not a combination of lower numbers. Clearing all cards on the table at one time means a "Scopa" and gives you big points.
